Bernard J. Dolan, Sr. Memorial ScholarshipEstablished in 1953 by Pavia Council and members of his family, the Bernard J. Dolan, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, totaling $4,000 ($1,000 awarded to four college students each year), memorializes a very uncommon man. Influential yet media shy, immensely involved in his church and community -- yet reticent of public acclaim -- Bernard Dolan was instrumental in reviving the Bethel-Danbury area following the demise of the hat industry. As a key director of several banks, trustee of several enterprises, and president of Danbury Hospital, he helped turn the economy and fortunes of the area around. Despite criticism, opposition and rampant pessimism, Mr. Dolan persevered -- he knew he was right and "stuck to his guns" as he traveled a solitary path. The Council's history notes that it was Brother Dolan's word and personal promise that ensured not only Danbury Hospital's survival, but also the future of many small businesses. Today, an extensive business operation located in Bethel bears his name. Mr. Dolan joined the Knights of Columbus with several other men returning from World War I in 1919. His business acumen aided the Knights not only in the purchase of their Council Home on Greenwood Avenue, but also in the fund raising campaign which led to the final mortgage payment in 1946. The Home's upkeep became his preoccupation. He was an aggressive builder; with his large construction business he built several area schools, factories and public buildings. His constant, tireless, and dedicated service and sacrifice to the Knights, community, and Church became legendary. He was the very embodiment of the Knightly ideals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. It is fitting that this scholarship bears his name.
