The improvement of maternal and infant care and the reduction of infant mortality and morbidity is of vital concern to all Virginians. To achieve these goals, the Virginia Division of Maternal and Infant Health has established seven Regional Perinatal Councils to focus specifically on improving perinatal health care delivery. Each council has created a collaborative network to encourage participation of key local professionals, consumers and agencies to pursue the goal of providing high quality care to perinatal patients. In Northern Virginia, Inova Fairfax Hospital functions as the lead agency for the NVPC. The Northern Virginia Perinatal Council holds general membership meetings quarterly and operates under bylaws developed by the Bylaws Committee. Its issue committees address specific perinatal health issues and meet as needed. Membership is open to anyone interested in improving the quality of perinatal health care in Northern Virginia, including health care providers and consumers. Every hospital and health department in Northern Virginia, as well as the key social service and voluntary health agencies such as the March of Dimes, Resource Mothers, Healthy Families, Project Link, The Juniper Program HIV Services, and the SIDS Alliance, is represented on the Perinatal Council. A quarterly newsletter, Perinatal Progress, is published and distributed to members.
