193 cases of fetal and infant deaths were reviewed between 1998 and 2000

38 % of infant deaths occurred at less than 24 weeks gestation

32% of deaths were 25-35 weeks gestation

31% of deaths were greater than 36 weeks gestation

12% were multiples: twins or greater

6% of the mothers smoked cigarettes during their pregnancies

4% of the mothers used alcohol or abused substances 

42% of the infant deaths were due to prematurity

29% of preterm infants who died had serious infections

7% of the mothers had chorioamnionitis

36% of the deaths were due to congenital anomalies

15% of the deaths were due to cardiac anomalies

67% of the mothers had > 5 prenatal visits

59% of the infants lived <1 day

60 % had private insurance

75% of the mothers were married

63% of the mothers were employed during their pregnancies

44% of the mothers or infants were transfers or transports to the perinatal center

41% were Fairfax residents, 20% were Alexandria residents, 17% were Prince William Area residents, 5% were Arlington residents, and 12% came from other areas in Virginia, Maryland or Washington, DC
