FROM THE COMMODORE

September. Believe it or not it's here. For some it means the end of the summer. For some it means back -to school. For me it means that my first year as Commodore isalmost over. When I started last September, we as a club had set out a few goals we wanted to achieve. Some goals we achieved, some are in progress and some are not started. If you have been to a monthly meeting in the last year, you already know they are no longer something to be feared The meetings have been brief and concise and that's including letting Helmie and Herb speak their minds. The Junior Training fleet is now top-notch. We now have 8 boats and 2 brand new trailers. All our boats have brand new sails. Our boats are so good now that we have ritzier clubs down the bay wanting to borrow them. The clubhouse looks great. The improvements that Art made during his term plus the new cedar shingles, fancy new Narrasketuck sign, new stove, kitchen floor, etc., have made the clubhouse look fantastic. Fred's little touches like the hose-off spout and water fountain add a nice touch. A project that is not complete yet is the north bulkhead garage area. We have not received our final permits yet. Sometime in the next month or two we will have to decide how we want to finish off the area. If you have any suggestions, make them soon before plans are finalized. Remember that there is a fall clean-up day and we will need volunteers. The biggest project facing the club in the near future is what to do about the parking lots. The blacktop is obviously in need of replacement. We haven't even started discussing this, but now is the time to start to come up with a few ideas. Perhaps you noticed that the south hoist was missing the weekend before the Narrasketuck invitational. In an emergency situation it was decided to lend it to Bay Shore YC. A few days before Race Week started, their hoist quit. That left them with over 130 boats and no way to get them in the water. I received an extremely nice letter from their Commodore thanking Narrasketuck for helping them out. Now they owe us one. Maybe they could help us get 130 boats at our invitational? The busiest racing season at the club starts in the fall and goes into the winter. Hope to see many of you out on the water.

GSBYRA NARRASKETUCK INVITATION REGATTA August 8th & 9th, 1998

The 1998 GSBYRA Narrasketuck Invitation Regatta was a great success due to the unselfish help of a great many of our members. I'd especially like to thank Pearce and Ken for their help, so that I could race my Mariner. We had 52 entries with many guests from other Clubs. Unfortunately it was one week after Race Week and the same weekend as a major Sunfish regatta, so some classes were a little light.
