From the May 4th 2001 chat at Yahoo!.

Martha: Hello everybody and good evening.
JuliaGRO: Characters usually gravitate towards the same group of people. Who in Oakdale do you think it would be interesting to see Lily or Rose mix it up with?
Martha: Definitely Hal. I think that it would be really interesting for Rose to befriend him. They would get along really well.
pwrscarlet: Hi, this is SoapCity member PWRKayla. Martha, I laughed so hard the day that Lily soaked Katie with the garden hose. Were you and Terri able to do those scenes in one take or did it take longer?
Martha: We did them in one take and barely held it together without laughing.
dave2_13452: Hi I'm member 4dave and I want you to know that I'm pulling for your win at the Emmys. Who are you rooting for as best actor?
Martha: Thank you very much. I really would love to see John win because we've both worked together for 15 years. Of course, he would be the most shocked person in the room.
bfan64: Good Evening Martha. Are you happy about Paolo returning to Oakdale. How will it affect you & Holden?
Martha: I cannot tell you how thrilled I am Paolo showed up in Oakdale again! We got to play comedy with Rose and Damian, heavy drama with Holden/Lily and Damian. It's my favorite story I've ever done on the show, the next three months.
lobo: Martha, have we seen the last of Rose's dad Joe? I hope not because their scenes are always great to watch.
Martha: Thank you. He is back and we are taping scenes next week where Rose and Joe are going to be spending a lot of time together due to a situation that brings her closer to her father. I love Tony so much, too. I am honored to even work with him so I cherish every moment I get to spend on screen with him.
amysteffan: Martha, what types of songs are going to be on the new CD?
Martha: It's all original material that I've written for the films that I've been in or done soundtrack work for. There are new songs that I've written. I've been so busy that as soon as I have a break, I will finish it. As soon as I have a little break in the chaos I will finish it. It's a very personal project and I want it to be just right. I won't put something out there just for the sake of finishing it, I want to get it right.
nik_elaine: Martha, playing dual roles must be exhausting! What do you do to relax?
Martha: What's that? I don't know! I don't have time to relax. I would call it more family time than relaxation time, is my diversion from my work. I play with my son and spend time with my husband. We keep busy because he's almost three. It's not down time, it's more like great time. We go to the park and run. I generally try to spend as much time with my family as I can.
christine_04240: Ok girl what's the secret? I met you at the luncheon and you have the most beautiful skin! Spill it! LOL!
Martha: That's cute. I really don't have. My skin is in a mess from all the makeup from the show. I get Derma Peel once and awhile and facials. I don't have a secret by any means. Drink a lot of water. I go to the dermatologist so I don't look like I'm aging faster than I am.
alwaysange: Martha, we know that "Paul Ryan" will be coming back, will he be involved in your story line?
Martha: Oh yes...very much so. As soon as he gets into town he will be involved in some way with both characters. He will definitely be a part of both girls' futures.
darlin_darb: It's so wonderful to chat with you......Do you see yourself ever singing on the show again as either Lily or Rose?
Martha: Absolutely. It's part of Chris's plan to have me sing on the show as Rose. When the story line dictates it. It's just every time we get together to talk about it some other story line comes along and diverts our attention, which is great, story after story, but when it's time it definitely will happen.
dave2_13452: Martha, do you read any of the message boards and if so which ones don't you like?
Martha: I don't go to the message boards because I am very sensitive and sometimes peek in. I am very happy when I see nice things, but nobody wants to hear anything negative about themselves no matter what they say. I take things really personally. I know it sounds so childish. I read all my fan letters, negative and positive, everything - some make me chuckle, if they are attacking the characters that's fine but if they attack me personally it hurts my feelings. I've seen a lot of actors get really wrapped up in it and get hurt by it so I just try to distance myself.
lightinfl: You started acting as a very young girl. What has been your favorite role?
Martha: That's a good question. I'd have to say when I was on In the Heat of the Night and played a drinking beauty contestant, but she had a great sense of humor and I got to work with Carroll O'Connor. It was a great part and everybody wanted it. It was my first job after I left the show in 1989. It was a great experience. When I think about the best roles I think about the people I'm working with, and that was definitely a fun part to play. She was a lot like Rose.
amyy0923: Which character is more likely to be someone you would be friends with... Rose or Lily?
Martha: Absolutely Rose! She's based on people I know, myself, the girls I grew up with. The reason my character is the way she is was the producer would watch me goof around on the set (making jokes, or comments about characters) and wanted to bring that to the screen for America to see. Leslie Kay told me that I really am both Lily and Rose. I really am both of those characters inside of me. The fans were the most supportive of the Rose character. I never got one negative letter. Every time I do a scene I ask myself 'How would I react?' And with Rose, it is 'How would Rose react or that part of my personality react?'
lynnjville: How do you think Lily has changed over the years? And what history do you think has made Lily the character she is today?
Martha: Depending on who is writing the show, I think she's changed sometimes for the worse and sometimes for the better. At this point I think she is very strong considering what she's gone through. She's trying to be a good person (which I respect about the character), it's not in her nature to behave and I think that now she tries to learn from her mistakes. She doesn't always succeed. I think the biggest influence, and I talked with Hogan about this, is that Lily's father committed suicide when she was four and she saw it happen. I got to play the scenes when she had those flashbacks when I was 17 on the show, and it got into why Lily is the way she is. Why she is so messed up and tries so hard to get a man and have a father figure. Her pain goes so far back. She needs big-time therapy. People who get angry at Lily, my first instinct is to say it's a story. I don't think she's really learned, I think she's trying to do the right thing. I don't mind that because she's very human. People are very quick to criticize the character for doing what she's doing but that's who she is, she's not perfect by any means.
pwrscarlet: Hello from SoapCity member PWRKayla. Martha, I am a HUGE Simon and Lily fan. Will we ever get to see them consummate their feelings for each other?
Martha: Well, there is a story coming up in the next few weeks and it does involve him on a much deeper level than what we've played before. It is really powerful stuff, I think it's the strongest story we've had in a long, long time. Paul Leyden is involved in that. There is a history there that we're not going to forget about. Hint, the scenes we're going to have are like nothing we've had in the past! There's going to be something much deeper involved with the story and I'm very excited for the audience to see.
chevy1glo: I just wanted to say like many fans, I started watching when you were with Dusty. I have watched you ever since and now my daughters also watch. We wish you the very best and send you many blessings.
Martha: Thank you very much.
lightinfl: Lily and Craig used to be really close. Would you like to see that remembered in the script?
Martha: Actually I think it's airing today or tomorrow where Lily invites Craig to the party for Holden and Lily to mend fences with mother. Lily has no idea how vile Craig has become. He was like a father to her even though he went through the women of my family like water. Still, it was a special relationship. I hope we get to do some more work together. I will be working with him as Rose as well. We're all having such a great time.
sworn_fate: Are you excited about the Emmy Awards?
Martha: It's really great. Every year we've been nominated, one here or one there, then it can be the longest broadcast in history and painful, just waiting for this or that category to come up. But this year we finally have a great year. This broadcast is going to fly by, because every five minutes someone else from our show will be up for an award! It's going to be awesome. If we don't win anything, we'll be there to support each other. If somebody wins, it will be outrageous. It's an ensemble cast and we all really like each other, which is uncommon. There's always some ego, etc., not in our case - there's no infighting by any means. Everyone is really happy for each other. The number of nominations just shows you what difference a year makes. Things can turn around in a year and we're all there together and that is how you succeed, with morale, support and camaraderie. You always overhear people cheering each other on.
kayla_loves_atwt: I can't wait to meet you at this year's St. Jude Hospital Benefit.....what kind of stuff is in store for us this year?
Martha: It's so early yet. I can't believe I'm thinking about it. I am bringing in more actors from L.A. this year. That's my goal. It's so early but things get crazy, after the Emmys I can start to think more about this.
maureentrodden: You do a wonderful job with the St. Jude Foundation! How long have you been involved?
Martha: Being a child actor I started when I was nine and when I worked my mom donated a portion of my earnings to the St. Jude's charity. When I got older I learned more about the charity. When I came back to ATWT in 1993, I made a vow to myself I would raise as much money as I could. We've raised over a million dollars so far. It's just gotten bigger and better every single year.
qwiji081380: When I watch Rose, I am totally amused. What Rose episode is your favorite?
Martha: So far, one is in the garage when she found Katie and Simon in the backseat of the car. I could barely get through it. It was so funny. The scenes with Damian and Rose coming up are so good. It's a sitcom, it's not like a soap opera. It's a laugh and a half! Paolo is so funny too, we had a blast!
qwiji081380: Martha, are you a leader at the set?
Martha: Definitely. I'm somebody that takes care and is there for anybody, anytime. I feel like when you have responsibility on the show, I try to set an example for the younger generation to be cordial and professional at all times and help anybody who needs help. That's the way I work. I really do take care of the people who want to be taken care of and it brings me joy. It's my education and I get to share it with other people I know. My parents taught me to be on time, know your lines, don't give anybody crap and learn. I get in my car and drive three hours everyday, sometimes more, and sacrifice a lot to do what I do because I LOVE it. So when I walk in, I have a smile on my face, I do my job and I love the crew, the director and producer and I want to set a tone that is positive. When you have that amount of work it is your responsibility to maintain some sort of vibe and energy. I laugh all day at work, unless I'm miserable in some scene, which is often. I really have a good time. It should be fun.
nik_elaine: Martha, who is the biggest prankster on the set?
Martha: Benjamin Hendrickson and Scott Holmes, probably are a tie. Those two are pretty bad. I don't work with them a lot but they just rip each other apart. Michael Park is a close second. He tends to be a victim most of the time. I always say they should tape the dress rehearsals of these guys because they're hysterical, and they're good friends too.
rubylily1: Can Jon Hensley sing?
Martha: No! He can play the bass guitar though.
qwiji081380: Kristina Sisco spoke nice things about you...what do you say about her?
Martha: Kristina always reminds me a lot of myself at her age, when I started the show, and I've told her that many times. She's an extremely talented actress and has the sweetest heart of anybody her age. She's genuinely like Abigail in a lot of ways and I encourage her to hang on to that as much as she can for as long as she can because this business is not very friendly to naive and young people. She's so strong and independent and maintains her sweet heart through everything. I'm so glad that she's working with Craig now, I see Adam as her Dusty. She's going to have an amazing career if she wants one. She's so smart and she's got a wonderful future ahead of her. I respect her a tremendous amount because she is so together for someone her age which you don't see very often.
keeky29: Speaking of far back...I met you when I was about 12, when I was at my nan's cottage, my name is Tammy...you were at a cottage too. I still have the picture my grandmother took, and people think it's a hoot to see you so young! LOL!
Martha: Oh my gosh!
ducky_me140: In many careers there are times when people wish they picked a different one. If this ever happens to you, what do you think of?
Martha: I can't picture myself doing anything else as far as a career. I could see myself being a stay at home mom. The older I get the more comfortable I am with that idea. It's the most wonderful job and it's the most important job in the world and I would love to have more children. If I wasn't acting I would have three or four more kids by now. I still love what I do and enjoy it as much as I did when I was ten, so it's not time for me to give that up yet.
gator7680us: Hi Martha. What's your typical day like at the studio? How long does it take to shoot a scene -- including rehearsal time?
Martha: I leave my house at 5 a.m. I get there about 6:30 a.m. I go through my blocking with my double. I go through my scenes at 7 a.m. and go to makeup and it's 20 minutes then wardrobe and at 8:30 a.m. they call us to the set. We block our scenes for the cameras. The director goes into a control room where he can see us. We dress rehearse our scenes, tape them and we're done. I go upstairs and change everything to do the other side of my twin scenes after lunch, usually. What happens, if there is a scene where I'm actually standing next to myself, that's called a locked camera and they shoot one side, split the screen in half and wipe it clean (I know it sounds strange) but the locked cameras can not be moved an eighth of an inch or it will not match. It's fascinating to film the twin scenes and overlap lines and everything. I did twin scenes just this last Wednesday and it took them six hours to edit them together. Cause you have to overlap lines with my own voice, it's very interesting. People are always fascinated when they see it. So, I could get out of there at three o'clock in the afternoon or at 7 p.m., it all depends.
lightinfl: If you could go anywhere as a real life person, where would your dream destination be and who would you take along?
Martha: I do it every year and go to the Jersey shore. That's where I grew up every summer. I bring my entire family. We just have a big party for two weeks and I do it every year.
cheerleadingchick2020: What advice do you give to young children who want to pursue a career in acting? And do you consider yourself a role model?
Martha: I don't recommend children getting in this business period. I did it because I had to do it, because I begged and pleaded my parents to do it. I'm an exception because I loved it. If children have a passion to perform, take classes, do plays and pursue this career as a hobby because realistically you're not going to make a living at it. I don't think any parent should push a child into this business for their own financial rewards or whatever other rewards they're looking for. Of all the people I've worked with in 21 years there is only one girl that is still an actress that I worked with when I was 10. All of them left, very upset, didn't enjoy it, or changed their minds. It's a very difficult business for children and it's very competitive. There's a lot of rejection. I took it harder than anybody when I didn't get a job. My parents would ask if I didn't want to do it anymore, and I'd say absolutely not, I loved it and wanted to keep trying. I always recommend kids do community theater, or singing lessons, dancing lessons - just to get that creative outlet for themselves. A role model? I don't necessarily consider myself one but I do feel the things I have learned from my life (as an actress, human being, mother, wife) have given me a wonderful life experience to pass on to others and teach and share. Hopefully, that example will help another person make a better decision. If that's a role model, than sure.
misstique70354: Who has been your favorite guy to play opposite of?
Martha: I have to say John Hensley. We are married and we've been together since I was 15 years old! It's like a lasting relationship and how many of those can you say exist, friendship, marriage, anything - and we still really like each other. So many men have passed through Lily's life and they have been great. But John and I really are like an old married couple and we really do enjoy each other's company and we know each other so well as far as our working relationship goes, it's like we could do it with our eyes closed and I love that about our relationship.
alwaysange: Martha, how does it feel doing love scenes with Jon with his wife on the show?
Martha: Kelly is never there when we have those love scenes. It doesn't make me uncomfortable because Lily/Holden existed before John and Kelley ever met. It's a very secure situation. We're all great friends. I don't feel an ounce of being uncomfortable because Kelly sets the tone that it's not something that I need to think about. I've heard of situations where that's not been the case but I have no idea what that's like.
tvba6: Congratulations to you and the entire ATWT cast for the Emmy nods -- it's been a great year. What is the cast reaction like on the set?
Martha: There's an energy throughout the whole building that's amazing! Everybody's so excited, it's really getting close now. The judging is done, the votes are in, it's over and we all just really want to find out. We're all anxious and thrilled. We want it to be over so the time will be here. We're so excited!
qwiji081380: Leslie Kay said that she just wanted you and Tom Eplin to win Emmys. What do you say about Tom and Lesli?
Martha: There's nobody more dedicated to her work than Lesli. I have to say she's one of those people who will call me at home if she see's something I've done that she likes. I think it would touch Lesli so deeply and make her so happy. It would mean something so special to her. I think she would be so pleased (not that anybody else wouldn't) but I think she would be so thrilled. I think every actor who works hard and is dedicated to their work deserves an Emmy! She had some really difficult stories to play with the ghost and did it with flying colors! To do a story like that and find the reality in that is really tough and she did it.
kayla_loves_atwt: Are you a fan of the reality TV shows, like Survivor?
Martha: I didn't get into Survivor too much this year, didn't have time. I would have to say that's my favorite of all of them. I did get totally hooked last year on the first one. As far as regular TV goes, Seinfeld is the one I am addicted to. I do have a problem. If I did have the time that's the show I would watch, over and over and over.
acemcquest: You keep in touch with former cast members. Who has been your closest soap friend?
Martha: Definitely Paolo. I still talk to him once a week and he is definitely my closest ex-husband, boyfriend, monk, whatever! We keep in touch the most consistently of anybody. And Lisa Brown, but she comes back once in awhile too.
acemcquest: Didn't you audition for the role of Lily more than once? What was it like when you actually got cast in the role?
Martha: I did audition for five months before and did not get it. I was 15, auditioned for Lily, and didn't get it. I flew to CA to audition for a movie called The Boy Who Could Fly, and came back to NY. The phone rings less than 24 hours later and the new producer calls and offers me the job over the phone. He called me on a Friday and I started on a Monday. The girl who was going to do the soap got the movie I screen tested for and was leaving the soap! It was like we switched roles.
amyy0923: Do you have any desire to work behind the camera?
Martha: Not really, I could probably produce on some level. I know enough about it now. I don't envy an executive producer's job, it's not fun, a lot of work and things you don't expect. I do love the creative things as far as producing goes. I haven't applied myself to that mentally, I may have to at some point.
qwiji081380: How do you stay so fit?
Martha: It's a struggle for me. I'm not naturally thin by any means and I have a normal body. I try to run and eat right when I can. I have very low will power but have to be in shape for my job. If I wasn't working on the show I probably wouldn't be as concerned about it. It is a necessary evil on television, wearing bikinis and being stuck on an island for four months. I don't overdo. Exercise is really boring. I do light weights and run when I can. I try to play with my son.
Martha: I just want to say thanks to all the fans for their support and their belief in me! Watch the 18th! If you miss ATWT for the next three months, you are a fool because it's going to be the best stuff on television! So, please watch and tell your friends. Good night everyone and thanks for being here!

cbssoapsonline asks: You do such a good job playing Rose! What's it like playing them both?
Martha: I love both of them for different reasons. I love Lily's history, her passion. I love Rose for her personality. It's the best of both worlds.

dave2_13452 asks: I've been watching Lily grow up from an insecure teen to a strong independent woman, how have you managed to keep her fresh for so many years?
Martha: It's not easy. I try to give her depth without confusing the audience. She has many insecurities, with her mother, her husband, etc. I always try to justify her perspective. I try to keep her as real as possible.

libragal00 asks: What high school did you graduate from? I read years ago that you graduated months before you won your Emmy in '87. I was supposed to graduate in '88 but I didn't.
Martha: I went to Immaculate Heart in New Jersey.

mysticcherub asks: Will you and Holden ever be back together and happy again or will you stay with Simon and Holden will get with Rose?
Martha: Holden and Rose will be growing their friendship, but there will be a decision for Lily.

Bongoboy11 asks: When will the new CD be finished?
Martha: I took a month off, and I hope to finish it soon. I barely have time to eat, much less the studio. I sell the CD online, through a distributor, available on the web. I do MP3 teasers on the web.

Bongoboy11 asks: Did you enjoy making Mergers & Acquisitions? I can't wait to see it at the film festivals.
Martha: I really enjoyed it. I was my first movie after the birth of my son. I got to write a song for the film, which I'm doing more of recently. They trimmed the timing of the movie to fit into festivals.

sarahp1999 asks: What is your favorite storyline and why?
Martha: I really love the story with Diego's murder and of course Lily and Rose. Our head writer has given these stories so many layers. As an actor you have to create. With Rose, I get to do that. I did Lily for so long, Rose seemed like a new job to me. I'm really thrilled with the fans' reactions.

mysticcherub asks: Is there a chance that Damian will come back to ATWT?
Martha: Damian would love to come back for a few weeks. He's on a short film, but he would come back for a few weeks. Hogan would love it.

ATrammell asks: I've loved you with Paul Leyden -- your love scenes are so passionate. Has it been fun?
Martha: Paul is wonderful. He's a dear friend, so nice, a great actor. A true trust has developed over the last year.

k9clips2002 asks: I really like Holden, but I have fallen for Simon too. Who kisses the best?
Martha: Very different kissers.... Holden is more rough and tough, in a good way. Paul is a littler more lip.

libragal00 asks: You were wonderful on Murder, She Wrote with Angela Lansbury. Working with an extraordinary actress, did you learn anything from her concerning acting?
Martha: One thing is that she is so committed to the show, and especially to the guests. Angela was very supportive, complimentary and great to work with. The same goes for any great actor I've worked with, such as James Earl Jones, who was so encouraging.

cbssoapsonline asks: Martha, how did you get your role in ATWT?
Martha: It's funny. I auditioned in 1984, but I didn't get the role. They cast someone more tomboyish. Many years later, I got a call to come in again. I was 15 at the time and I was gonna go back to school. But Robert Calhoun called and offered me the job. I had already given up.

sarah__k asks: Are there any plans for you to sing with Paul Leyden the next time he plays the guitar?
Martha: I hope so. They're thinking of having Rose and he in a rock band - I love that stuff.

dave2_13452 asks: What were your first impressions of Jon Hensley when he joined the show?
Martha: I had a mad crush on him. He was 19, I was 15. He was everything, really nice, shy and cute. He is like family.

Miriam_aap asks: How can I get your newsletter again? I moved and I don't get it anymore?
Martha: You can write to the studio for the newsletter.

sarahp1999 asks: Do you ever keep in touch with Brian Bloom or any of the other co-stars that have left the show?
Martha: I do keep in touch. I saw Brian three months ago. He has his own production company. I just saw Paulo. I have good friendships with so many of them.

barbiefreitas asks: Do you have a web site?
Martha: No, I'm working on having a web site soon.

toya123_29204 asks: What scene would you submit for an Emmy reel, if you were nominated for an Emmy next year. You are doing a good job playing a dual role, I hope you do get an Emmy nomination and win.
Martha: I would use the scene of Rose and Joe, when she comes to Lucinda's house. Or the show when they find out they're twins. If anyone has opinions, please let me know.

sqeaker_2383 asks: Hi Martha! Im a 17 year old male and I have grown up watching you on ATWT and I can't tell you how much I have liked you and Lily. I just want to know what it is like to be a star. I have been acting in all my school plays and have thought of being an actor but I just wanted to know what is the work like day to day.
Martha: Well, I leave home at 5:15, arrive at 7, do blocking. I have a double who helps with Lily and Rose. Then we rehearse, then we tape twice. I'm done by 10, change my hair and makeup. I might have more Rose scenes in the afternoon, and back to the studios. With both roles, the camera is locked down, with guard, so that absolutely nothing moves until they shoot both characters.

Kathysum asks: I had the pleasure of meeting Paul and taking him through Graceland while he was here in Memphis back in October. I sent you a music video CD via Paul and wondered if you received it?
Martha: We watched it! It was great. We gave it to our boss.

cbssoapsonline asks: Have you worked on any other movies or soaps?
Martha: I've gotten used to daytime. I haven't done enough film, but I'm very comfortable where I'm at. It's the most creative I can be. Primetime is nice, but daytime is very fast.

sarahp1999 asks: Do you write any of your own songs?
Martha: Yes I wrote songs for Jane Doe with Calista Flockhart. It's called "Anywhere You Are." I'm trying to write more. That's what happened with Mergers & Acquisitions. I watched the movie, and wrote the song with Jennifer.

gadadoit2000 asks: Will there be an Oakdale Christmas party?
Martha: There's a party at Lucinda's, but everyone's sorta depressed. Sierra is coming back.

sarahp1999 asks: Do you ever watch any other soaps? If so, what is your favorite?
Martha: I love The Young & the Restless. I have for many years. I really enjoy it. You have familiar characters, and you just trust the hour of TV you are watching.

dave2_13452 asks: What was it like working with Caroll O'Connor in Heat of the Night?
Martha: He was amazing. Everyone said "dont talk about Archie," which was not true. He was supportive, committed - he would stay late to help me. Again, committed actors...

cbssoapsonline asks: What is your favorite movie?
Martha: Hard question, American Beauty. I loved it. There are so many. Like Kramer v Kramer for instance. I love Meryl Streep. I want to be that natural.

sarahp1999 asks: Who do you admire the most and why?
Martha: My husband. He's the best husband a girl can ask for. He's such a great person. He doesn't watch me on the show. When he does, he gets the chills. Since he doesn't watch the show, he is very objective.

soranda2 asks: Martha does your CD have the Bonnie Rait song you did on the show?
Martha: The CD that I released - it's on there.

sarahp1999 asks: Do you hang out with your co-stars off the set?
Martha: I see Michael and his wife, they live close. We try to get the kids together. I see Paul - we work out together. In the summer, I have a pool. We barbeque and talk just like everyone else.

iowakansas2000 asks: Hi Martha, I like the scenes you do with the kids Faith and Luke. How old are they?
Martha: Luke is 7, faith is 2. They are great actors. They come from great parents. I try not to do the emotional stuff around the kids.

sarah__k asks: I heard that you went to the west coast recently to shoot some new ads for ATWT with Paul Leyden. What was that like?
Martha: We had a great time. I took him to meet Paulo. He had more friends than me. I took him to the Smokehouse - met with all the old ATWT folks. It wasn't sunny, but he got a chance to see Cali.

bassman727 asks: What was your biggest inspiration to become an actress?
Martha: Allison Smith, from 'Annie'. She was in Evita. It motivated me to go to the audition for "Annie". If not, I would not have gotten into acting.

krysrebel asks: The death of "Caleb" - Michael Morrison (I think this was his name) must have been hard on the cast. Was it a tough decision to replace him?
Martha: He passed away before I came back. It was a terrible tragedy. He was so talented. Then Douglas passed away as well, it was all horrible. We still feel his presence. He was so humble. He had so many problems.

dave2_13452 asks: Will we see anymore Snyders come back to Oakdale?
Martha: You'll see Emma a lot more. Our writers want to focus on developing the current characters. It's a very important factor, for the actor to be developed fully. Lila is coming back.

sarahp1999 asks: Do any of your costars play practical jokes on each other? Who is the biggest prankster?
Martha: Benjamin and Michael and Scott. Three of the funniest guys. They are so hysterical.

Kathysum asks: Will the Beloved and Diamond storyline loose ends ever be tied up?
Martha: Yep. Rose is still after the inheritance. It will be resolved, but on another level. I'm pleased that were going ahead with it, but with many twists and turns.

melissa_3000 asks: What motivates you Martha?
Martha: I have a true passion for my work. I learn more about myself, or my characters, or my work. It is too much work for it not to be fun and educational.

vixen_santas_naughty_reindeer00 asks: Martha, I have watched you since the Dusty/Holden days. Do you think they will ever bring the Dusty character back for a guest appearance?
Martha: He's already been asked, but he's said "Why would anyone care?" I try to tell him that everyone would love it. It would be so much fun.

kcjmacymay asks: Who does your hair?
Martha: We have three stylists. I always do Lily first - the pillar (and less hairspray). It takes a lot of product - it's fun changing the hair so much.

jenny3791 asks: What is your dressing room decorated like?
Martha: It's a slob's mess. It's sorta notorious. I have pictures of my family. I recently cleared my desk. I have a broken chair and some girl scout cookies from last year.

jean53092 asks: Do you plan to have more children?
Martha: No more kids quite yet. It's very hard, too hard to work. Motherhood is a life-altering experience. Maura West said to me that the change in the look in your eyes is immense, through love and change and growth. It's not about yourself anymore, the focus is mainly your child. It's about this beautiful angel that you bring into the world.

bassman727 asks: I have acted in a few plays in my high school career and I am always nervous before the play. Are there any things you do to get yourself prepared for a show?
Martha: I dont get nervous anymore. But I get very nervous public speaking. It's sort of irrational. Like in this one play, I was so nervous for 15 minutes, then I was fine. You cannot enjoy your work when you're nervous. It's hard, but the more you perform, the easier it is. Practice, Practice, Practice.

woodwindmusic asks: Martha, I came in late so excuse me if you've answered this question already, but if you could play another character on the show, which would it be and why?
Martha: Katie. She's such a funny character. She's very challenging.

Martha: Thanks so much for all your questions and comments. Thanks for all the support for the show. We appreciate the support very much. There's so much coming up on As the World Turns - keep watching. Thank you again and goodbye.

 9/29/99
Martha Byrne: Good evening everyone! :)

pinsonfan asks: How did you become involved with St. Jude's Children's Hospital?
Martha Byrne: When I was a young actress in the business, I always donated a portion of my salary to the hospital and when I came back to the show in 1993, I made a promise to myself that I would do everything that I could possibly do to raise money for the hospital, and since I was in the public eye, I had a great opportunity to do that. My mother was always such a supporter of the hospital, and again, being a child actress and it being a hospital for children, she thought it was a charity that was most appropriate for me to learn about and support. And as I got older, I learned more about the hospital and fell in love with the kids. It's an amazing charity.

Niki_Oct asks: Who is helping you with the St. Jude's drive this year & is growing every year?
Martha Byrne: Definitely growing, not so much in the numbers -- we've consistently had sold-out attendance for the last 3 years, but it's growing in terms of the prizes, the auction items are becoming huge items, amazing trips and anything you could possibly imagine and more, we have! Kelley (Menighan Hensley, Emily) has been helping me tremendously this year, my mother doesn't sleep because she's on the phone 24 hours a day, and my sister Fran, and the NY office of St. Jude's. But that's it, that's our committee. And next year we've decided we need more people, more help, because there are a lot of phone calls and faxing and following up to do. But we do have amazing, amazing prizes this year that people will be impressed by. I mean, I am impressed by them. The generosity has been overwhelming from people.

nob3 asks: i enjoyed the couple scenes with you, Holden, Jake and Vicky. Any chance we'll get a story with all four of you sometime in the future? It seems like these two couples would play well off of each other.
Martha Byrne: Unfortunately, Jensen is not coming back, at least not right away. I love Jensen and Tom and it was fun, the little that we had to do together, but I don't see us crossing paths again anytime soon, unfortunately.

angel_16_05_22_82 asks: martha its your cousin Martha and i was wondering how little mickey is doing and how is Mike p/s were going try to make the benefit
Martha Byrne: Great! Everybody is great! Everybody is healthy and happy, and I hope we all see the relatives at the benefit this year. I've got a lot of them! :)

pinsonfan asks: Are you still singing and recording?
Martha Byrne: Uh-huh! I just wrote a song for the film that I did in March, called Mergers & Acquisitions, and the song is actually untitled right now but it's done and recorded and finished, and the film is coming out next spring so I have some time to come up with the title. "Running from Myself." We'll call it that for now. And I'll be recording probably 6 more songs in the next 4 months or so, and hopefully I'll be releasing something very soon.

chesiofmic asks: Martha, who's planning on being at St Judes this year?
Martha Byrne: I have to say, scheduled to appear, I always say that, because I don't want anyone's feelings to get hurt, is the entire cast of the show, except for Jon Hensley (Holden) who is going to be in Las Vegas because his sister is getting married that night! That's the only excuse I would have taken! We have 65 actors coming from All My Children, ATWT, Guiding Light, and One Life To Live. So we are covered, I would say, by every show that's out of NY. We have a great, great turnout; it's a great list. I wish I could name everybody but it would take up 100 screens! :)

faces4you asks: What has been the most challenging part of your role as Lily?
Martha Byrne: Honestly, I have to say, the times when the stories weren't going the way that I felt they were going, or I was a little concerned about where the writing was headed, which is not happening now, but that has always been the hardest part: to maintain the integrity of the character and make her a character that people wanted to watch, regardless of where the writing might have been going, and I've been very happy over the 13 year period; there have been some ups and downs, but we got through it. We can always get through it!

alemapdawn asks: Are the writers going to let you do some singing? You have a great voice!!
Martha Byrne: Thank you. Yes, I am going to be singing again on the show. Probably not until after the first of the year, but it is going to be a very, very innovative way to see music on soap opera. It will be very interesting to see how this will all come about. It's going to be fun.

Niki_Oct asks: Do you think someday you could do auctions on the internet for those of us who can't come to NY?
Martha Byrne: You know, I was just talking about that with my husband tonight. And yes, we are putting something in the works so that we can do that. We are going to see how all of the items go at the event, and perhaps something that's passed up or doesn't get a bid as high as what it's worth, we'll throw it up on the Internet and see how that goes. And this year, we'll have a video for sale of the entire event for people who can't go. There will be a tape of the evening, backstage footage of the event, rehearsal of the event, plus a behind the scenes tour of ATWT. So that's also for people who can't make it, for whatever reason, to NY. It gives them an up close and personal view of what we do. And you can order the tape through the same number that you get the tickets: 212-251-0270. You can order now or after the event and they will be available. And there are tickets still available; we're selling out quickly, so get on the horn! :)

sarahbeth_2 asks: how long have you been acting and how did you get your big brake?
Martha Byrne: I have been acting for 20 years on January 24 of the year 2000. And my big break was my open audition for Annie on Broadway, and ATWT. Both were big breaks for me, because first run, Annie, was just a fun thing to do, and ATWT, when they called me, I had decided to take a break from acting until after college, and they called me that very day and offered me the job. I had auditioned 8 months before but hadn't been getting work and wasn't really satisfied with the business, so I wasn't even really thinking about ATWT. So that was definitely the biggest break.

alemapdawn asks: Are they going to let you and Holden be happy for a while?
Martha Byrne: We are happy right now! Yes, we are going to be happy. We don't want to get boring, but we are happy. They are bringing on his daughter, Abigail, so that should add some interesting scenes for us. We've been through worse than illegitimate children, that's for sure! But that will be an interesting challenge for everyone to do.

baby_curlytop asks: do you love playing lily?
Martha Byrne: I do love it. I wouldn't be there if I didn't love it. I care more than anybody about my character and I love the character or I wouldn't be there. There are other things in my life that make me very, very happy, so I wouldn't go to work every day if it didn't bring me joy. I wouldn't get in my car every day if I didn't love it. I think people can tell I love it, hopefully! :)

Niki_Oct asks: I've noticed pictures of you with your mother-in-law in SOD but don't recall one of your mother. Ask them to run one of her
Martha Byrne: You know, my mom hides from the cameras, so maybe at St. Jude's I can corner her. They only ran one once from a St. Jude's benefit 2 years ago, but I'll tell her that it's time for a new picture!

shippette asks: are you glad elizabeth hubbard (Lucinda) is back?
Martha Byrne: I could not be happier. It's a relief to see her walking through the hallways these days. She was sorely missed and we're very, very happy to have her back.

Marina1_98 asks: Is there a possibility that you visit The Netherlands in the future to sing?
Martha Byrne: Yes! I was supposed to go a few months back and it was decided that they wanted to televise it, so they had to revamp everything and start over. So yes, I will be at some point!

joani0412 asks: do you associate offscreen with holden?
Martha Byrne: Yes, we do. We see each other pretty often outside the studio. We live very close to each other, and Michael Park (Jack) and Lesli Kay Sterling (Molly) live close by, and all these people live in the same area, so we see each other a lot. It's time for bed for my son -- let me just say good night.

angel_16_05_22_82 asks: martha who is the band perforing at the benefit?
Martha Byrne: It's the Party Dolls, they play all over the Tri-State area, they played at my wedding... they are awesome and so accommodating. They have been so great. I am sure a lot of people have seen them perform before. Plus, the actors are singing, obviously. 12 actors are singing: Kim Zimmer (Reva, GL), myself, Michael Park, Scott Holmes (Tom), Victoria Platt (Vicky, GL), Catherine Hickland (Lindsay, OLTL), Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL), Christine Toy Johnson (Lisa, OLTL)...

CoolSweetie4u_99 asks: How does it feel to be on a soap opera performing in front of millions of people?
Martha Byrne: You know, to me, I perform in front of about ten: the crew. You could never possibly imagine in your head that many people watching you. You would go crazy, it's just such an amazing amount of people. I don't really think about it.

Ans_nl asks: In the Netherlands we just saw the scenes with Molly and her suicide treat. Wasn't it heavy to play all these scenes where you and Holden got back and she stays in the middle
Martha Byrne: Oh, yeah. It was definitely a foil for the relationship, another person coming in the middle of us, but it was hard, because Jon and I wanted us to be together after all those years, we wanted us to be sort of happy, not too happy, but it's always hard to have a third party. I am vaguely remembering being pregnant at that point when we were filming, so it's all a little blurry!

karagirten asks: Do you bring your son to work with you?
Martha Byrne: No, he stays with my mom. My mom comes to my house. There are no windows where we work, so it's not exactly the most kid-friendly building. So he stays home with my mom or my husband.

princess010283 asks: Do you think that Lily regrets giving up Hope to Denise?
Martha Byrne: Of course she misses her and I don't think she regrets it; I think she thinks she did the right thing, as hard as it was to do it. I think she misses the baby but she doesn't regret doing the right thing, as hard as it was.

chelbrad asks: will the other snyders be back--Meg , Josh etc.?
Martha Byrne: There have been rumors that we will be seeing them on some level, somewhere in Oakdale, and who that will be, and when, is still not been discussed. But I can promise you that with Chris Goutman being our new boss, that he really is committed to making the family relationships stronger on the show, and if that means bringing other people back and strengthening the family, then you will see other people come back.

candy_123_71457 asks: who is your favorite man character to work with
Martha Byrne: Man? :) Other than Jon? Michael Park, I would have to say. He makes me laugh.

Steakum824 asks: may I also add Martha, you must talk to the writers about Lily being so trusting! It has to stop before Holden tells her to smarten up or get out!
Martha Byrne: Yeah, right! Well I can tell you that I have scenes with Carly coming up, for a change, which is pretty interesting that you say that. Lily is not very trusting of Carly.

lila_roberts_cory_winthrop asks: How was working with Lisa Peluso (Lila)?
Martha Byrne: I didn't work with her! I didn't have one scene with her! But it was so nice to see her around the studio. She's very nice.

hoppe_34_1999 asks: do u ever feel like u go throught to much on the show
Martha Byrne: No, if I didn't go through all the things I've gone through, I wouldn't be there anymore! I would be old news!

eca301 asks: Hi, do you have any plans to leave the soaps and go for movies?
Martha Byrne: Well, I have been very lucky that I've been able to leave and do some movies in the past few years, and I've been very fortunate to have bosses that have been very understanding of my desire to do other things, so I am going to keep doing that. As long as I keep getting the support from the people I work with, I am going to keep staying. It's nice to do other characters and to travel a bit, but I am very happy right where I am.

donaboba asks: what is your favorite type of music martha
Martha Byrne: I listen to everything, absolutely everything from Nine Inch Nails to Sinatra. I love music; I listen to it all day. My husband just went, "Nine Inch Nails?" But for a heavy metal band, they're pretty good! :)

Buttercup_95660 asks: I love you on ATWT. Who is your favorite character to work with?
Martha Byrne: Lucinda, definitely. Hands down.

chesiofmic asks: Martha, I went to St Judes Last year, didn't get to meet you personally and it was wonderful, I am deaf/hearing impaired but wondering why aren't kids present at the Benefit?
Martha Byrne: Because it's an adult evening, there is dancing and it goes very late, and we try to discourage young children from coming. It's a fund-raiser, and the money that we raise goes right to the kids, right to the hospital. And most of the adults that are there need an adult night out, so we make sure they have a great night out and a lot of fun! It's definitely more of an adult evening than anything.

mtt001 asks: Don't you think Lily needs some friends in her life? Are we going to be seeing her hang out with maybe Julia or Camille?
Martha Byrne: Never happen. It'll never happen. Lily has no idea how to be friends with anybody. She has never hung around with people her own age. She doesn't have very peer group relationships, which is unfortunate because I would love to work with some of the other actresses on the show, but it just doesn't look like it will happen. Lily seems to be hanging around the dysfunctional people. Even when I started on the show, her friend was Shannon, who was much older.

infinity1198 asks: Martha do you like the young and the restless?
Martha Byrne: I love Y&R! I'm a huge fan of the show, always have been.

chelbrad asks: how old is your son now?
Martha Byrne: He's 16 months. Yesterday, he turned 16 months.

RNurGr8 asks: Any news on a new studio?
Martha Byrne: Yeah, I wish! No, nothing. We know absolutely nothing at this point.

mtt001 asks: As a veteran of the show yourself, who do you think are some of ATWT's breakout stars right now (who you think will make it big outside of ATWT)?
Martha Byrne: I think Nathaniel Marston (Eddie) will definitely be a huge star. You heard it from me first. I know he will be. There is no doubt in my mind. He stands out in my head as somebody that is very deep and has a lot in his corner.

jessica76017 asks: WHO IS YOUR HUSBAND?
Martha Byrne: Mike McMahon! He's a cop, a sergeant in the Bronx. He's cute, he's nice... great husband, great father...

mahal94 asks: How is it feel to have your Mom back on the show and it is such a noble thing for you to give the baby back to Dennise. Is it hard to do those scenes? Good luck to you on the show. Your such a great actor!!
Martha Byrne: That's so nice. Very hard scenes to do, because, being a mother myself, I can't even imagine doing something like that, giving up a child after you've raised it for a year. And it's great having Liz back; she just brings so much to the show. It's not ATWT without her.

keibc asks: Where would you like the writers to take your character now? Lilly has done just about everything.
Martha Byrne: I agree. I think she has done just about everything. I really want it to involve my music, and I think that is definitely something that's coming. I think it would just be a fun story to do, and Lily's not 30 yet, so she's still young, and still got a long way to go, you know? I mean, I don't think I can be kidnapped anymore! I don't want to be kidnapped anymore! No devil possession -- I have it in the contract! Something based in reality, but there are always stories to tell in life, and telling it through a character like Lily always brings some sort of an amazing journey for the audience, because they do trust the character. But it would be fun and a different direction to do something with my music, to own a club and maybe get involved with some bad people -- something dangerous and fun at the same time. I don't know. Just not being kidnapped!

DestinyLittrell asks: Martha, are you close with your family in New Jersey?
Martha Byrne: Oh yeah. My mom is here almost every day and I see my nieces and nephews at least once a week. Yeah, I'm very close with them.

Rynoway asks: Please just say hi, I have been a big fan since 88! You were my first star i ever wrote!!!
Martha Byrne: Oh, that's so nice. That's so sweet. Hello back.

RNurGr8 asks: Does your husband enjoy music, also? What about the baby?
Martha Byrne: My son loves music. He loves Sinatra, big Sinatra fan. Ever since I was pregnant, I would sing to him and play music for him all the time. My husband is very into alternative music. Mike has a broad spectrum but he goes to the alternative side. We both have good taste in music and we kind of learn from each other.

again_and_again99 asks: Will Iva ever be back on?
Martha Byrne: Possibly! Like I said before, there's been some talk about bringing back the family members here and there to give the audience a nice treat. When it will happen, I have no idea.

faces4you asks: How has becoming a mother in "real-life" changed the way that you act in your role as a mother on ATWT ?
Martha Byrne: Well, I think being a mother gives you such life experience, unlike anything you've ever experienced before, so all those wonderful and scary emotions you go through as a mother, you can bring them to your character. Before you experience them, you can TRY to do it, but once you actually are a mother, you are very clear about your feelings toward certain issues, you're so set in your ways about certain things, and it's amazing, such an education being a mother. It's unbelievable.

chesiofmic asks: Will Paolo/Damien ever be back to visit his son? Just love that guy!
Martha Byrne: Yeah, he has said numerous times that he would come back for a stint here and there, but they really want him back permanently, not here and there, which I understand. But he's always willing to come back if he's needed, because he really does love working on the show and the crew and we have a great time when he's there. We just laugh.

Niki_Oct asks: Is there really going to be another man in your life? You & Holden deserve some happiness but I keep hearing rumors
Martha Byrne: No, he's not going to be a love interest for me, it's going to be a friend, period. It will just be an interesting relationship, a friendship. And that's it. And that's what our boss has said in the press, too. That's the truth. It will be an interesting twist but it won't be a romantic interest unless the audience wants it, which you never know!

_MamaJ asks: can we see Emma in her kitchen again cooking this winter?
Martha Byrne: We just shot scenes today, as a matter of fact, in the kitchen! I know we are going to be seeing a lot of the Snyder kitchen. Storyline-wise, there is going to be a twist involving the farm. And no, it will not burn down! So you will see a lot more of the farm in the coming month.

Ans_nl asks: Are you still in contact with Paolo ?
Martha Byrne: Yes! His girlfriend just had a baby a few weeks ago, and yes, I speak to him at least once a week.

keibc asks: Besides Holden, what has been your favorite storyline?
Martha Byrne: I think when Orlena was drugging me. That was one of my favorites to do. That was fun. And the Diego storyline, that was another one of my favorites because it was so out of character for Lily to be a vamp, trying to get information out of Diego. So that was fun too.

fireman_in_mi asks: how did you get in such great shape so fast after having a baby???
Martha Byrne: Um, first of all, just having a baby you lose weight right away, and Jenny Craig, I did it and still do it and believe in it: it's been great for me. And I do exercise when I have time, but I am not being a commercial when I say that Jenny Craig has been wonderful for me. I like structure. I cook for my husband, I love to cook for my husband, but that's about it.

karagirten asks: Are you happy that Lily returned Hope to Denise?
Martha Byrne: I think it was the right thing to do. I am glad that I agree with the decision as an actress, because it would be hard for me to justify it if I didn't feel that way. So as hard as it was for the characters, I think it was the right thing to do.

jewels_60m asks: how do you like being on a soap opera
Martha Byrne: I love it! It's a great job, being a mother and having a family life. It's almost like a 9 to 5 job, but it's much better, much more exciting. You know where you go to work every day and you know how long it's going to take you to come home and you're not travelling halfway around the world on location. I love it. Like I said before, I wouldn't be there if I didn't love it.

Niki_Oct asks: It's been a great pleasure to watch you grow up & turn into such a beautiful young lady inside & out. Do you ever thing about how much joy & entertainment you bring to people's lives?
Martha Byrne: Thank you! You know, I think it's such a gift to be able to bring any joy to anybody. That's all we want to do, isn't it, in life? Make ourselves happy and our family happy? And if we can touch one person and touch their lives and make them happy, that is such a gift. That's why I do this charity event. To touch so many people, and to see people giving kisses to their favorite soap stars... it's just a gift. And without the fans, we wouldn't be there, bottom line. You touch people's lives every day. There are a lot of people who can't leave their homes for whatever reason, and the only salvation they have is to turn on the TV and see the show. I have heard that more than once. That's why we owe it to the fans to always maintain the integrity of the characters and make it interesting to watch. And it's a responsibility that we don't take lightly, believe me.

Amy_103_99 asks: How long have you been married?
Martha Byrne: Five years on November 12. Oh my gosh! I can't believe it's been 5 years! It's amazing.

infinity1198 asks: What's your favorite Soap Opera to watch on your free time?
Martha Byrne: Young and Restless, other than my own, for sure. I love that show.

_MamaJ asks: how can we try to influence the writer about a story line
Martha Byrne: Write letters! Make calls. The response that happens when Liz left was just out of control, and I think Liz would have been back no matter what when Chris Goutman came back. One of his first phone calls was to Liz. So let me tell you, it makes a difference. Write letters. Liz Hubbard reads all her mail, picks out her favorite letters, and puts them in the bosses' mailboxes. All the letters are read.

lil_bailey_11 asks: Do you ever get tired of people coming up to you for autographs
Martha Byrne: No! It doesn't happen that much but when it does, it's very sweet. I find it very flattering. When people don't know who you are, you know you're in trouble, because then you know nobody's watching you! I enjoy it, actually.

tumblebrook asks: If you could pick only one thing, what would be the best thing about playing Lily? I really enjoy watching the show. You are great as Lily.
Martha Byrne: Well, thank you. Kissing all those cute guys, I'd have to say that's pretty good! LOL. I think the best thing about playing this character is the fact that I have so much experience and so much history, that she's a part of me now. It will always be for the rest of my life, even if I become a huge movie star, people will always remember me as Lily. Which is FINE with me. Brian Bloom, who I still keep in touch with, people still ask me 10 years later if Dusty is coming back. That shows you how enormous it is, the number of viewers you have who support you.

RNurGr8 asks: Will the St. Jude tape be available on Amazon?
Martha Byrne: I don't know. That's a good question. Definitely through the hospital, which means through the NY office. We've never thought about that, but maybe we should. Thank you for that -- it's a really good idea.

shippette asks: DO YOU HOPE THAT ABIGAIL WILL HELP MOLLY BECOME A BETTER PERSON ON THE SHOW?
Martha Byrne: Oh, that's impossible! I think it will just make Molly cringe. Lily will enjoy it, I think. It will be good for Molly. It maybe will teach Molly a few things about life. I don't know if Lily really cares either way about Molly's happiness, but she does want to see her be a good mother, or at least presentable! And it doesn't work -- I'll give you a hint. Molly is just falling apart at the seams, which Lily enjoys. Of course, I feel for her in a way. About 10% of Lily feels for her. But Lily can't forgive Molly for everything she's done. But it makes for interesting scenes between the three of us, Molly, Holden, and Lily. Because Lily hasn't forgotten or forgiven. She's not really a big supporter of Molly. Hopefully Abigail will like me and not Molly -- that's probably what Lily wants way deep down, because Molly caused so many problems.

joani0412 asks: how old is lily supposed to be?
Martha Byrne: Actually, Lily should have had her 30th birthday in August, which never happened. I think August 24 is Lily's birthday, and she should have been 30.

karagirten asks: Do you feel AW can find a place on the ATWT?
Martha Byrne: You know, I think what we have now is perfect, the amount of people that we have there. We have an enormous cast as it is. There's always room for people, to a point, because our audience expects ATWT. So it's a nice treat for the viewers but people still turn on Ch. 2 to see ATWT. It's a nice addition but I think who we see now, Tom is staying permanently (as Jake) and that's it.

shay48625 asks: Marhta I would like to say thank you for bringing me excitement I was on a bedridden pregnancy I watched you since you first came to oakdale
Martha Byrne: Wow, that's great. I love that. To me, that makes all the difference in the world, because just being pregnant and walking around was hard, but being bedridden -- oh my goodness! When I was in the hospital having my son, there was a woman who had been there for three months, upside down, sort of, and I cannot even imagine that! I hope you didn't have as much of a problem, shay48625.

dncngrl24 asks: HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK DO YOU TAPE?
Martha Byrne: The show tapes 5 days a week but I don't work that much. I probably work 2 days, since my story is kind of over and I'm kind of quiet right now. But the show works 5 days a week.

Niki_Oct asks: Will they be having anymore of the AIDS balls in Oakdale. One of my favorite pictures of you is the year you came back with Derek & you had your hair up & that beautiful dress on. I always looked forward to the balls
Martha Byrne: I know in speaking with Chris that he wants to have a few big events on the show each year, and I'm sure that will be one of them that will come back.

keibc asks: Tell us about Douglas Marland, what was he like? I miss his influence on the show.
Martha Byrne: He was one of the most entertaining people I've ever met in my life, he just had the most amazing love for his characters and the people that portrayed him, unlike anything I've ever seen before or since. He was the best at what he did, no question, and there really have been very few like him, ever. He enjoyed life, you know? He was just an amazing man. Missed greatly.

jessica76017 asks: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE STAR?
Martha Byrne: Meryl Streep, definitely.

treinen_2000 asks: Coult you send a personel greeting to my wife she is a great fan of you and she lives in the Netherlands
Thank you for the support and watching the show, I send my best to you and your wife.

nienbe asks: Have you seen the movie that Paolo plays in..Tea with Mussolini? It's about to come out here in Holland and I'll defenitely go and see it!!
MARTHA BYRNE: I have not seen it yet but everybody else at work has! I haven't had time. But I've heard he is just great in it, totally charming. And I hear he shows his heinie! That's what I hear.

karagirten asks: I saw your hubby when you sang in MI, he's cute!
MARTHA BYRNE:Oh, isn't he cute? He is cute. He's adorable. Very handsome. Thank you. And he thanks you!

RNurGr8 asks: Have you ever worked with Marlo Thomas with the St. Jude foundation?
MARTHA BYRNE: I've met her, we've discussed the benefit many times, but we do not work together on the event. She has a big event in November that's a Wall Street event that is really her big event in the city. But there are so many charity events for St. Jude's that go on across the country, so many.

phsycology_101 asks: Ive watched your show for 3 years and ide like to say what a magnifacent job you've been doing. Id just like to ask what your biggest stress is on the show?
Martha Byrne: I don't stress, I really don't. I don't stress that part of my life. I don't really worry about it too much. I do have a tremendous love and care for what I do, but I don't stress about it. Nothing can't be fixed, I always say. Nothing is worth getting worked up about.

juliet_lostforever asks: I love ATWT for one i have watched it all my life and i think you are wonderful i am 16 but anyway do u like working on ATWT is acting all it is cracked up to be?
Martha Byrne: You know, people think acting is glamorous, and it's not. I mean, it has glamorous moments, let's put it that way, but in general, it's an amazing job to have because you get to travel in your mind and your spirit and touch emotions in yourself that you never would have otherwise, and it's fun, it's a lot of fun. But it's not glamorous; I think it's more fun than anything else. Very challenging.

neondeon_60 asks: ANy chance of getting Tom Wiggins (ex-Kirk) back,,,,,he and Lucinda are great together and he would be great to play against Jake character
Martha Byrne: You're right! You're absolutely right. You've got to write letters, because we would love to have Tom back. Great actor, great character. Write letters, that's all I can tell you.

Rynoway asks: Do you still have Baby & Snowshoes the cats?
Martha Byrne: Oh my god! No, they have both passed on. Baby lived until he was, I think, 14 years old. Natural causes. Snowshoes -- also natural causes, which is good when you live on a busy street. It's true!

chesiofmic asks: Martha, Will there be a new Christmas show this year? Loved the '97 one!
Martha Byrne: I have no idea. We are getting a new opening to the show, I can tell you that. It's really cool, really good. I don't think you'll see it until the end of October, though. There are two versions of it, I think.

shippette asks: WHO IS YOUR FAV ON Y&R?
Martha Byrne: That's a good question. Hmmmm, I gotta be careful how I answer this because I have so many. I am a huge Eric Braeden (Victor) fan. I think he's just awesome. This is tough! And Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), I think the two of them are just so great. I am big fans of theirs, and I love Doug Davidson (Paul), because I love him in person, I think he's an amazing actor. I love him on the show and in real life he is so funny and so different from his character.

mrugglesroi asks: What is your favorite TV show?
Martha Byrne: Friends.

dfetter881 asks: I try to watch your show in between my classes and i love it. i have been watching since i was 9 and i am now 20. How does doing the love scenes affect you, if they do? and what does yourhusband think about it when you do them?
Martha Byrne: My husband doesn't watch them, doesn't really watch the show, period, which is fine. Love scenes are in front of 20 people sometimes and not very intimate, and you can't quite get caught up in it because you've got 20 people around! If you trust your co-star, you do share a lot, it's intimate, as intimate as you could be with who you work with. So you have to trust each other and know that if something is inappropriately exposed, they'll help you make sure it isn't exposed. We wear shorts and tank tops; we're totally covered up, you know? It's fine. It's not one of my favorite things to do, but... it's part of the job.

Rynoway asks: Do you see Holdan and you being the long time couple ?
Martha Byrne: I definitely see us in the Tom/Margo, Kim/Bob region in terms of going the distance. We will have our ups and downs, but Holden is her soulmate, no doubt about it.

SODhost: Thank you Martha for joining us tonight! Remember, tickets are still available for the St. Jude's Benefit on Friday, October 15.

Martha Byrne: 212-251-0271 is the number to call and they are open regular

 August 27,1998

MARTHA BYRNE: Hello everybody!

sherrisno: Hi Martha! Welcome back from your maternity leave! How are you and your beautiful baby doing and are you taking him to work with you?
MARTHA BYRNE: We're doing very well. It was a difficult birth :) but I'm back on my feet again and back to work. He comes to work very rarely. I like him to stay at home because that's his environment - [with] his toys and his stuff, but he comes and visits.

hunnebee_98: How are you liking motherhood so far?
MARTHA BYRNE: It's the hardest job I've ever had. The most rewarding job I've ever had. And it's overwhelming -- in good way :) I can't even put it into words how amazing it is.

sindyjo: So when are you going to have the baby on the show?
MARTHA BYRNE: I think in 3 weeks under bizarre circumstances -- of course :)

reesh9999: Can you give us any hints on who the "unlikely" person who will deliver your baby is?
MARTHA BYRNE: It's Lily's worst nightmare.

jake_28_99: Will the baby be a girl on the show?
MARTHA BYRNE: It's a surprise -- you'll have to wait and see.

reesh9999: Is Elizabeth Hubbard [Lucinda] as much fun as she seems?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh Liz is the most fun to work with because of her spontaneity and her creativity and her sense of humor.

hunnebee_98: Are you glad to be back at work?
MARTHA BYRNE: I was just ready to go back when I did. I needed the time to recover from everything but I am happy to be back and I was just ready to go back when I did.

jtbarnerkrb: Are you planning on working less hours since the baby was born?
MARTHA BYRNE: I am working less hours. We're taking it very slowly -- my reintroduction to the show and work which is working out very well for me, because I do need the time to spend with the baby.

sindyjo: Where would you like the writers to take your character of Lily?
MARTHA BYRNE: I'd like to see her get a job... and I'd like to see her as a mature adult and I think we're starting on that path. I don't think Lily's the victim any longer... or if Lily is in those situations, I don't play her like that anymore because when you become a mother, there's nothing scarier because that child is the most important thing. So growing up and getting a job... getting into a work environment... Maybe working with Lucinda. That would be kind of fun.

vgreen5: Can you give some clue on upcoming storyline?
MARTHA BYRNE: All I can say is that Lily is put into a desperate situation in the next few weeks where her life is on the line.

Born2bBest: Martha, I'd love to see you go head to head with David and put him in his place. Is that going to happen soon?
MARTHA BYRNE: Very much so. Very much so.

LynneL_98: Is Damian Grimaldi [Paolo Seganti] ever going to come back?
MARTHA BYRNE: The answer is no. [Paolo's] doing a movie with Cher right now. He's busy :) Maybe five years from now...

jtbarnerkrb: What was Paolo like to work with? Talk about sexy!
MARTHA BYRNE: As sexy as he was, he was twice as funny. I never laughed harder working with someone in my life. He was amazing and I miss him.

Macy090: Martha your singing voice is so nice... loved that song you sang a few years back that Bonnie Raitt sang...how low did it take for you to become such a singer?
MARTHA BYRNE: I started as a child when I was in Annie, the Broadway show at 10 years old and I always loved singing so over the years you learn and get better and continue to learn. It's fun for me. I enjoy it.

M_Keegan: Can we expect to hear you and Michael Park [Jack] singing on the soap any time soon?
MARTHA BYRNE: I would love that. Michael and I talk about it all the time. I think Lily has to get on her feet again and back to normal as they say, and hopefully we'll get around to do that... so write a letter! Ask the boss! We'd love to do it.

SusanHalifax: Martha now that your a mother has your outlook on life changed in anyway?
MARTHA BYRNE: Everything changed. Little Michael and my husband are the most important people in my life. As I said before, it's overwhelming how your priorities totally change, within a matter of minutes.

cherly_98: Would you play childbirth differently now that you have done it?
MARTHA BYRNE: Yes, yes absolutely. One of my notes when I was doing the scenes was that I was yelling too loudly and my comment was that they're still talking about my yelling at the hospital! :) So what you see on air will be pretty realistic.

SAB62: Who's watching the baby now?
MARTHA BYRNE: He's sleeping :) And I'm listening to him on the monitor in case he wakes up -- and then I'd have to go.

DanceGal3: Hi Martha. What is it like working with Jon Hensley (Holden)?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh, it's like working with someone in your family. We've known each other for so long and we've grown up together. It's like we know each other so well that I feel totally comfortable with him after all these years. It's wonderful. I'm so lucky.

dcdcj89: Are you going to forgive Lucinda for getting involved with James?
MARTHA BYRNE: Of course... Please! Yes... I think Lucinda's done more things that are far more destructive in her life. So it seems that Lily's already forgiven her after yesterdays air show... but I don't think Lily knew the extent of Lucinda's involvement... and still doesn't.

DanceGal3: Are you going to be releasing another CD?
MARTHA BYRNE: Hopefully sooner than later. I just recorded 5 more songs for a new CD. One is the title song to Calista Flockhart's [Ally McBeal] next movie called Pictures of Mary Jane Doe... so as soon as that movie comes out you'll see it on the shelves... I hope :)

vortex_03833: Hi Martha do you find it very difficult to juggle your family and your job? It must be exhausting.
MARTHA BYRNE: I do feel like superwoman at times! :) And I can still make a lasagna and still take care of the baby. I've accomplished that... it's the most rewarding thing to me in the world. It's difficult but you gotta do it... it's like every other mother in the world... you do what you have to do to get what you have to get done. I am tired though. :)

GAR65: Are you giving Kelly Menighan-Hensley [Emily] lots of advice now that you have experienced pregnancy firsthand?
MARTHA BYRNE: I give her all the tips that were told to me, plus a few that I picked up myself. I am brutally honest with her because I wish that people were a little more honest with me :) I really tell her the truth, because I wish that people... maybe I heard it, but maybe I didn't really hear it. I reiterate them over and over to Kelley about baby and labor and daddy's involvement. All the stuff I can pass on I try to tell her.

otrx1: Hi Martha. Is it difficult being married to a police officer?
MARTHA BYRNE: He loves his job just as I love my job. I know he's taken care of, I know that he's going to be okay. If I worried about him everyday, I know that I would drive myself crazy... so I just let things happen as they're supposed to and have a lot of faith.

vgreen5: Are any of the other Synders coming back?
MARTHA BYRNE: No. I don't think so. I know they've been toying with the idea. Seeing Iva come back and Kathleen Widdoes -- Emma -- is still around but no at this point they're not coming back full time -- they still make guest appearances here and there.

DanceGal3: Will Lily stay in hiding for awhile?
MARTHA BYRNE: Yes, but not the hiding you think.

Neenbean: Martha, will we ever see Lily have a friendship again? I wish Lily and Emily could become friends. As opposites there would be some great stories! IMO
MARTHA BYRNE: Yeah, you know Emily was married to Holden at one point and Lily never liked Emily. Kelley and I don't have scenes together, but there is history there. But Lily isn't allowed to have friends :) At least her age. The only one she did was Molly and look how that turned out... so I don't think Lily will have friends anytime soon.

petunia25_1998: What are you calling your baby? Mike Jr.? Mikey?
MARTHA BYRNE: Mikey.

Born2bBest: Does "Lily" ever want to tell "Holden" to get a job! LOL
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh absolutely not! :) never. She'd rather have him home so she can kiss him all day. She's got millions. What does he need a job for?

otrx1: What do you do for relaxation?
MARTHA BYRNE: I don't have relaxation at this point. I go to sleep if I can. That's it :) That's a gift.

M_Keegan: Do you have any other movie projects coming up?
MARTHA BYRNE: Yeah actually something that I'm not going to be in, but that I wrote.. called Katy's Promenade. I'll be behind the scenes on that one... and I'll be writing music for some other film projects. As far as acting, I have to get back in shape first before doing any outside roles.

reesh9999: Which actor that has left the show do you really miss?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh I'd say definitely Paolo, for sure... and Bill Fichtner is someone who I really miss, who played my dad. There are so many people, but you can't turn back the hands of time, fortunately and unfortunately.

Rose_in_Virginia: What characters would you like to see involved with Lily in the future?
MARTHA BYRNE: Hmm... there are so many that have left and that are new... Definitely Brad, I think he's a really interesting actor, Nick, and definitely Jack, Michael Park. I like working with him. I think the idea was toyed with to put us together before I got pregnant. Maybe explore that idea... so you never know what will happen down the road.

shy_0001: What's Katy's Promenade about?
MARTHA BYRNE: It's a comedy. About something that happened to me when I was 18 years old that has to do with a Prom and every teenager's worst nightmares. Think 16 Candles of the 90's.

Cory_27: Who will be in Katy's Promenade?
MARTHA BYRNE: That's a very good question. We're trying to figure that our right now. I'd like to have a newcomer, an 18 year old newcomer, so we'll see... and a lot of cameos. Famous people doing little cameo roles, character parts.

Rose_in_Virginia: Is Lisa Brown returning to Oakdale to stay?
MARTHA BYRNE: No, unfortunately. But you never know. We were all surprised when she came back for that one show so we -- being Lisa and I talking on the phone hoping we'll get to work together some more -- will see.

daleannJ: Do you surf the internet much? Or at all???
MARTHA BYRNE: Never. I don't even know how to go on the WWW. I get my email that's it. I check that about once a month! :)

Cory_27: Is this your first attempt at writing?
MARTHA BYRNE: Yes. I was inspired to write this story down after telling the story to a friend of mine who proceeded to laugh for about 2 hours... it's a long story :) But he totally encouraged me to write it down, so I did, with his help actually.

petunia25_1998: Do you write music and lyrics?
MARTHA BYRNE: I do. Usually the words I write first and I have a writing partner, Jennifer Marks, who plays the  guitar so we kind of work it through and come up with ideas.

Cory_27: Do you prefer the behind the scenes work or being in front of the camera?
MARTHA BYRNE: I really enjoy both. The behind the scenes thing is very new and very exciting I really enjoy it more than I thought I would. In this business you have to be prepared to find another job because you never know when your current one will end. So I find this to be really interesting and fun but a different kind of fun.

PMASON66: I would love to see Iva and Lucinda have it out over who is grandma to Lilly's kids. Would you like that??
MARTHA BYRNE: I would love that. It's funny because Lisa and Liz didn't work together the day in Chicago the apartment that Lily was in but they made comments about each other and it was really funny... I wish we could explore it more. It's funny relationship.

Born2bBest: Did you find it difficult to write your screenplay? Or did it come naturally?
MARTHA BYRNE: It came really naturally because it was an experience I had myself... So all I had to do really was put it on paper. The dialogue was the hardest part. The story was there but the dialogue was hard.

vgreen5: Is Brad going to become Lily's stepdad?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh God, I hope not. :) I don't think so... Oh God what a thought! LOL

Neenbean: Do you plan on staying with ATWT for as long as they'll have you? Or do you see yourself moving on again?
MARTHA BYRNE: You know, I'm very happy where I am right now. I can't plan 10 years from now because who knows what will happen in that time... but I love where I am right now. I laugh everyday, love the people I work with but sometimes change happens, but as long as things stay the way they are now, I'll be very happy.

IsisX2: Martha, don't you think that it's time that your mother (Lucinda) has a love life?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh, it's long overdue. I pitched the idea of having Mike and Mark's father come on for her 3 years ago... have him be this blue collar really sexy guy, but then the boys left... She's need the action, long overdue. I knew there was something wrong when Lisa was getting some action but not Lucinda -- not that there's anything wrong with Lisa -- but Lucinda deserves some action, too.

Cory_27: In "soap opera world" characters come and go very often. Did you ever think Lily would endure and be loved as much as she is?
MARTHA BYRNE: No I never thought it would last this long because of that reason... characters just come and go so quickly on daytime. When I was 15 starting the show, I never thought I would be here 13 years later. You can't plan something like that you can only be fortunate that it happens... It's a blessing really. And the writers have something to do with that. The character remained popular because the character remained interesting and important. So without them, I wouldn't still be here, either.

peachi69: Will your and Holden's marriage hold up this time?
MARTHA BYRNE: It looks that way. At this point. I think the writers are really trying to give these characters a challenge they can work on together as opposed to being separated. I think it's time for them to be together and enjoy each other for a while... go through struggles real couples go through and go through it together. But as they say, nothing is forever, especially on daytime.

Born2bBest: I love how you've brought real "courage" to Lily... she's not weak! Do you have any aspirations for her?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh, I think to see her get stronger and stronger. Lily's a grown up now and it's time for her to act like one. I'm bringing in my experiences, I think she can get well rounded and being a mother I can see how that strengthens you, through labor and whatever. I think that's important to bring to the character, to continue to bring that kind of strength to her.

ange_30909: I recently saw you in "Pink Lightning." What made you decide on a character that had loose morals?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh 'cause it's fun! It's just so much fun to play a character like that. That's why I left ATWT in 1989. As an actress you need to experience all sides of you or you'll just shrivel up and die. So that role was just a blast to play because it was the opposite of Lily. It was a lot of fun.

Born2bBest: Speaking of Mike. I read about Christian's upcoming TV series. Have you spoke with him since he left?
MARTHA BYRNE: I saw him in California when I was in LA a few months ago. I haven't spoken to him since he got the series but I am happy for him because he's a really great guy. We'd like to have him back on the show, so maybe during his hiatus he could come back on the show :) I'd really like that.

snowlilly68: Do think it will be revealed that you and Georgia are cousins?
MARTHA BYRNE: Yes, as soon as I get back to Oakdale, I'm sure. I'll have someone to talk to, but she won't be Lily's friend because Lily has no friends. Lily's always discovering new family members so it won't surprise her much.

cfm1965: How's the St. Jude's Benefit planning coming along?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh it's coming really well, we are just doing so well. Get your tickets quickly we are going to sell out this year for sure. We've got 50 actors coming. A lot of performers this year. A lot of singing. A big party -- a great party. We've got lots of auction items. It's a lot of work, but it's coming along very well.

IsisX2: Any chance of bringing back Craig and Sierra and that side of your on-screen family?
MARTHA BYRNE: I would love that. Scott Bryce I see every once in a while and I beg him to come back. See I'm the only woman in that family that has not married him or dated him. He's a wonderful actor and I'd love to see him back. Finn just had a baby so I don't think she'll be back anytime soon, but I would love to have them come back.

otrx1: What's your favorite TV show?
MARTHA BYRNE: Seinfeld. I'm totally addicted to it. And I really like Everybody Loves Raymond. I'm a sitcom watcher, I'm not a big hour drama watcher. I don't have the time.

mathews4: Martha what is your favorite city?
MARTHA BYRNE: Mmmm... First New York City of course.. but San Francisco would be second. I've been to a lot of cities.

bonjovigirl: What kind of music do you like?
MARTHA BYRNE: Right now I'm really in love with Linda Ronstadt... her lullaby CD. It's so good I recommend it to all new mothers. I don't know the name of it, but it has a picture of her on the cover as a baby.. I love everything from Sinatra to Madonna. Seriously.

petunia25_1998: Martha, you have so much talent! Are you ever going to return to Broadway?
MARTHA BYRNE: I would love to, hopefully someday. Broadway's tough with a new baby... and the hours.. But someday I will.

PMASON66: Where are Josh and Meg these days???
MARTHA BYRNE: They're supposed to be in Waco, but in real life Bill Fichtner's doing movies and Jennifer Ashe had a baby who's probably a year old by now... so she's a Mommy.

Cory_27: Are there any actors or singers you really admire, or inspired you?
MARTHA BYRNE: I really like Sarah McLachlan. Meryl Streep is my favorite actress of all time, I don't know if she inspires me, but I am in awe of her, of her ability.

Neenbean: Do you think Lily and Julia will become friends?
MARTHA BYRNE: These are the 2 nicest people in Oakdale. You better believe they'd be friends. I don't know who's nicer. I think she is a little... but who knows how long she'll be nice for. The longer she stays in Oakdale the harder she'll become :)

proudmom2: I think the chemistry between Lily & Holden is wonderful, did you both know it the first time you were cast together?
MARTHA BYRNE: I sure did. I thought he was the most adorable person I had ever seen in my life! LOL No kidding I was 15 and thought if I felt this way most of America would think he was adorable. So, oh yeah, we knew right away. And here it is all these years later... It's something that just happens, you can't plan it... and then you can milk it for 15 years! LOL If you have it, then you can do something special with it.

IsisX2: How do you feel about the recent departures of Daniel Markel [David], Sherri Alexander [Sam], and Tom Wiggin [Kirk, pictured]?
MARTHA BYRNE: Tom I've known forever and worked with forever. I will miss his talent and his sense of humor and his commitment to the show and his character. Sherri is a new friend and always has a smile on her face and will miss that. And Danny I'm just starting to work with now... and I will miss his commitment to his character and the show. You lose a lot of people over the years on the show, and you hurt for them whether they leave on their own or not, it's always difficult.

Believe_in_Possibilities: Hi Martha! Do you and Jon have any input as to the sex of the baby?
MARTHA BYRNE: No. It was decided a long time ago.

PMASON66: What is your favorite musical????
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh gosh... I'd have to say Rent.

DanceGal3: I hope Holden and Lily have some happiness. Will you?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh we will definitely. I don't know for how long :) But we will be happy.

snowlilly68: Have you kept in the touch with Bronson Pickett [ex-Diego]? He was a hunk!
MARTHA BYRNE: Yes I do. He called me after the baby was born and we touched base. I wished him all the luck in the world on Another World... and we talk every once in a while.

Alamo_Aggie: Does Tom Wiggin still write for the show?
MARTHA BYRNE: No. Maybe he will now. I think they wanted him to do either or - couldn't do both

proudmom2: I love the scenes in the Snyder home and glad they have never changed it. Do you feel sentimental about things like that?
MARTHA BYRNE: Oh I love that set. It's my favorite one. So many memories happened in that one. And Kathleen and I sit on that little step that goes up to the bedrooms and sit there and talk. When you're working you get your script and sit right there... That just our spot.

cfm1965: Would you like to write or direct for ATWT?
MARTHA BYRNE: I don't think so. I think it if I ever got involved behind the scenes in daytime it would be as a producer. If I ever decided to do something like that I think that's where my energies would go.

xenalk: Would you ever consider writing an auto about your time on ATWT like Eileen Fulton?
MARTHA BYRNE: You know, if I ever had to write something like that I'd have too many stories that people would not want me to share :) LOL I say that because certain memories are just our memories and aren't for anyone else. It would interesting though, I tell you that :) LOL

SODhost: Thank you, Martha! And thank you all for joining us!
MARTHA BYRNE: Thanks for all the support and see you at the St. Jude's Benefit!

 October 13,1999

Martha: Welcome to the chat! this is Martha Byrne, saying hello!
Kelley: Ditto! Ditto! Ditto!

bfan64 asks: Hello Kelly & Martha. Kelly: Is Emily ever going to stop obsessing over Tom? And are there any plans for Tom and Baby Daniel to have paternity tests done.
Kelley: What a great question. No Emily will never stop obsessing over Tom! Of course she will eventually, but when I don't know. A paternity test sounds like a great idea. The more conflict the better.

oh_elizabeth_jade asks: Okay, Martha, I have to know... what's it like to win an Emmy? :)
Martha: It's the biggest honor you can achieve in our field! It's overwhelming, especially when you're 17.
Martha: Flattering.

brianna_11756 asks: I think you are both such beautiful, talented actresses. Here's my question: How does it feel to both be married to the same man?
Kelley: I get him on the weekends! I don't know. I get all the perks. I get a sharp dressed man on the set a couple hours a day.
Kelley: Where is my laundry, did you call the cleaners?
Martha: That's true. I get the dirty underwear. I don't really think about it in that way. It's very funny.
Martha: They're both good.

oh_elizabeth_jade asks: The whole Hope story line has been very touching. How do you feel about the way it was resolved... if it's really been resolved?
Martha: It has not been resolved yet, but it's going in a different direction, which you'll see very soon. The Hope issue will continue to be a conflict in Holden and Lily's relationship in the future. It's been a pleasure to play the story, because it's very touching, being a parent it hits close to home.
Martha: you can relate to those motherly emotions. It was very challenging, very heartfelt as well.

some_obscure_reference asks: Kelley, thanks for playing the character I so love to hate. :) Do you think Emily is evil, or just misunderstood?
Kelley: I don't think she is evil, she is just really messed up. She needs to be in therapy so badly. The idea of being in scenes where I'm just talking to therapists sounds horrifying. She is kind of a tragic character.
Kelley: None of her childhood issues were ever resolved or dealt with. It is just sad more than anything. I'm the town loser right now.
Martha: And I'm the town angel, and victim.
Kelley: Victim!

lori_22230 asks: Lily are you ever gonna meet Damien again?
Martha: I hope so! I know Paulo would love to come back here and there. They'd want him on a long-term basis, and he's too busy, he's all over the world traveling and working. But it would be nice to have him back once in a while.

brianna_11756 asks: How has having children changed your lives?
Kelley: I think the answer for both of us, is can you imagine your life before them.
Martha: I used to think that when you found the person you married, that person is the one who puts you at your best, and that's true, but not until you have a child.
Martha: They're the ones who bring out the best in you.
Kelley: It is the purest love there is. It is also the hardest job in the world.
Martha: It's the best.

octorron asks: To what do you attribute your striking glows of afterbirth?
Martha: I'm still trying to find my glow. Makeup artists and hairstylists.

roselindagl asks: Kelly it has been a while since I have been able to see the show. WHY did you cut your hair?
Kelley: How long ago? Have you not been watching? I cut my hair because I don't like sitting in a hair chair for more than ten minutes at a time. The older I get the less I care about it.
Martha: I like when people say, "don't ever cut your hair again." Thanks...
Kelley: I was the first one who said you are a long hair person.
Martha: I like it short because it's easier.
Kelley: If I had hair like yours I wouldn't cut my hair.

MichelleP_97 asks: Will Lily ever sing again on the show? It was so sweet the first time Holden saw Lily again in Italy, and she was singing, I can't make you love me.
Martha: I will be singing on the show again... probably after the first of the year you'll see be singing again. In a different way, though, a little more present-day, my own music. It's going to be cool. Keep watching!

bfan64 asks: Kelly, is there any chance that Baby Daniel is really David's child?
Kelley: I thought that was a great idea. Anything is possible. I doubt it. I thought of that when I was pregnant at the time, but I think we have so many kids on our show and so many baby stories that they want to stay away from it for a while. Maybe when he turns 15 they will do a DNA test.

patmeg asks: If you could relive any fun moment that has happened to you what would it be and why?
Martha: I would say my senior prom, because it was god awful and I would like to do it again.

mtt001 asks: What other ATWT stars, other than Michael Park, are going to perform at the St. Judes Benefit?
Martha: Scott Holmes, myself, Eileen Fulton at the pre-cocktail party for the ATWT fans.
Martha: It's all about Michael Park though, isn't it? :)
Kelley: Of course it is. I'll be back up if you ask.

msbold1 asks: Kelley, how do you handle watching your husband act romantically with Martha? And are you friends in real life? Do you hang out together?
Kelley: No, I can't bare to watch! You really don't take a second thought to any of it. Other than I always try to tell the both of them to make it look more passionate and real. If you knew us you would know we are all really good friends and it is acting.

beckycrou asks: Will Holden's daughter with Molly cause problems with Lily and Holden
Martha: What do you think?
Martha: Absolutely, because Molly gets to visit more often, which is always a pleasure for Lily.
Martha: There's definitely going to be a conflict, but more from Holden than Lily. Holden is very drawn to her because of what's just happened with Hope. That's were the conflict is headed.

some_obscure_reference asks: Would you recommend a career in show biz to your children?
Martha: I grew up in the business, since I was 10. It was the best experience I could have asked for, because I had a great support system from my family, and I was encouraged to be creative and grow.
Martha: It was also fun, a hobby, not a "career". When I didn't want to do it, I didn't have to. As long as kids are in it they want to do it, not the parents, and the kids love it, I don't think it's a problem.
Martha: The problem is when the parents force the kids.
Kelley: You can tell with kids at an early age the kids that are forced to do it in their life. I think the new little boy who plays KC, is prefect preteen, the oldest of 5 kids, but he is so good at what he does. He loves it.
Kelley: If they love it, great.
Martha: I was the same way, you couldn't get me off the stage, from the time I was 9.
Martha: They'd rather be playing with their friends, I would have rather been on stage.

enyo_war_goddess asks: Hey... I am 16 and have been watching ATWT since 10...I want to want know if filming ever takes a toll on you guys both physically and emotionally?
Kelley: Especially with kids now.
Martha: Absolutely. It's very emotional. You have a commitment to the studio. It stays in the studio, but if you love what you do and you're committed to it it does put a strain on your physical being, especially with a little baby.
Kelley: The good thing is if your story is front burner or back burner, you tend to get breaks that aren't really vacations, just a break in your story. It isn't as bad as somebody who goes to work at 8 and leaves at 7 every single day of their lives.

beckelhimer99 asks: What are some of the most memorable moments from your acting career? And don't just give me one! I'm sure you have lots of stories.
Kelley: Mine was getting my first job with Kenny Rogers and having him call me before to tell me I had the job. I was just out of college and pretty green. That was pretty great.
Martha: I did an Underoos commercial when I was 10, and that was probably one of the most embarrassing moments of my life.
Martha: It was me, Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. I had a crush on Yoda. We kept in touch for three years after that. E.J. Dockerty was his name. So if he's listening...
Martha: it's more about the people you meet than the actual work. I'm just sitting here thinking about people I've met through the years - interesting, intriguing, talented producers, actors, a grip.
Kelley: That is because you spend so much time just waiting.
Martha: You develop relationships with people because you're sitting around so much, especially when you are not filming.
Kelley: Lately at our show!
Martha: One of my memories -- meeting Douglas for the first time, Marlon, I remember that vividly.

turnergalt asks: Hi Martha and Kelley! Are you enjoying working with the new regime of Exec Prod & Head Writer and Director?
Kelley: God, without a hesitation. The biggest YES ever.
Martha: It's been great. We knew Chris before when he was a director. He's like one of the guys. One of the gang. You don't feel any separation between leader and the team. We're all a team.
Kelley: One of the gang!
Martha: Which is nice. I've had it all different ways in the years I've been there. This is definitely a good way to run a company.
Kelley: It doesn't get any better than this.

mtt001 asks: Martha, I am a huge fan of your work as Lily. With regard to the show, don't you think Lily owes it to Julia (after everything she's done to protect her family) to help her get back together with Jack?
Martha: I don't think that's the last thing on her mind right now. I think Lily would be much happier if Jack were with Julia. She's got too many other problems to worry about.
Martha: Lily is selfish. I have two kids. I wish I worked with them more. I would like to work with Annie and Michael more.

mscrinkle asks: Is Emily ever going to get a life and stop chasing after Tom?
Kelley: Oh my god! Enough with those questions! LOL If I wrote the show I would be a non-loser. They promised me that Emily will get a life and will grow like people grow after years and years of abuse. Yes, imagine your frustration and multiply that by a million of what I've been feeling the last year. I'm a team player and will be patient and hope they see the light.

turnergalt asks: Martha, what former cast members do you keep in touch with on a regular basis?
Martha: I just spoke to Brian Loom last weekend. Paulo Saganti, I talk to him once a week. Lisa Brown.
Martha: Scott Freis, every once in a while. There have been so many! Bill Stickner every once in a while.
Kelley: I always run into him. I don't know why. Every fourth or fifth time I've run into him.
Martha: He's around! He's like Jesus, he's everywhere.

turnergalt asks: Kelley, how hard is it to yell & verbally abuse Marie Masters in your scenes?
Kelley: It is really easy! She is the nicest person on this earth and, so it always kind of hurts my feelings as we get going. But once we get into the scene it gets really easy for me.

some_obscure_reference asks: Do either of you have pets?
Martha: Kelley had a dog for about a week.
Kelley: I had a tiny tiny teacup Yorkie. We went back to decide if I should get her not. We learned I was pregnant when I got her, so I took her home to my parents and left her there. My parents love her.
Kelley: Didn't you use to?
Martha: I don't have a dog or cat. MY husband and I are highly allergic. My mom has the dog that John gave me when I was 17.
Martha: She has arthritis and can't see out of one eye, but other than that she's great!

Alyoop69 asks: It must be tough to live a normal life with such a high profile job. Do people bother you when you shop, etc. and how do you handle it tactfully?
Kelley: In daytime we come into people's living room every day. People feel like they know you. That is a good thing in a way. You become part of their life. It is not intrusive. People are really nice. Everybody has been so complimentary and nice. I've been very blessed with the people who have come into my life - in and out.
Kelley: That goes for the fans. I wouldn't be on the show without them. It doesn't offend me, it is very nice actually.
Martha: When we're all together, it's a little too much.... and then Michael Park, put him into the picture.. four people from the show and people can't figure it out!
Kelley: It happens more time then not when John and I are together. People who don't know we are together will notice him and ask if that is who they think it is. I'll them yeah it is!
Kelley: There are other times that I'm making reservations over the phone or something, and someone will recognize my voice.

msbold1 asks: Kelley-How do you keep in such good shape? Are you an avid exerciser?
Kelley: No, I use to really love to exercise before I had Sophie. Now I don't do it regularly at all. I have a pretty good diet, lots of sugar!
Martha: Lemon bars, key lime pies..
Kelley: I love lemon bars! I had Twix for desert last night. It is in my family I guess.

sherrie1213 asks: Martha, how is your newest addition to the family?? Do you have the baby on the set with you??
Martha: No, he stays home with my mom. He's great, he's a joy, 17 months and a little angel. He's great.
Martha: Talking up a storm, running around.

cashyn_99 asks: If you could play any character who would it be?
Martha: I'd like to play Molly. I like that character. I think that would be such a fun character to play.
Martha: She's done every job, everybody.
Kelley: That's true.
Martha: She's got a great, fun character to play.
Kelley: Kind of trailery...
Kelley: I can't even think of anybody off hand. I don't know who I would really want to play. I would want to play Rita. I would like that. She was weird, man. She was a great character.

madeline_76 asks: What do each of you enjoy doing in your time away from ATWT?
Martha: Rita! That was fun too.
Kelley: Sleeping!
Martha: Staying home.
Martha: With my husband and my baby. That's fun.
Kelley: Yeah, turn some music on, cook in the kitchen.
Martha: We like to do the same things. Once we're home it's hard to get us out of the house.
Kelley: Same for us. We are just homebodies.

msbold1 asks: Martha and Kelley-Would you let the writers know that they need a love interest for poor EMMA the farm maiden?
Martha: No kidding!
Kelley: LOL!
Kelley: A hot young man.
Martha: She swears that her husband Harvey is tied up in the attic.
Kelley: She always comes down fanning herself.

turnergalt asks: To Martha & Kelley: What have been your favorite story lines to act out in the show?
Martha: I would say the drugging story, and the Diego story.
Kelley: The whole Diego story line was great. He just ripped up the town.
Martha: That was fun for everybody. And I got to play something I'd never gotten to play before - the seductress, trying to get the info out of Diego. It was fun to be the one weaving the web, into the victim.
Kelley: Our to get him. That is the easy stuff. It is this kind of non-incidental stuff that you have to play in-between that is hard to keep interesting. That other stuff you run with it.

lovelytigerlily asks: Martha, were you pleased when Lucinda's character returned to the show?
Martha: Thrilled! I haven't seen her much since she's been back, but I'm now starting to work with her more. It was a huge loss not to have her around, and I think the audience agreed. That's why she's back.

turnergalt asks: Kelley & Martha: What are the best changes the show has made recently in your opinion?
Kelley: I just think the overall sense of - everyone has taken a very large exhale and you really don't understand that unless you are at work every day. People are excited and relaxes at the same time. They are happy to be there and are constantly encouraged by our Producers. It has done wonders for our moral.
Martha: I like the new young kids that are coming on. I think it's such an important element. If you don't cast it right and treat it with kid gloves you'll make a huge mistake. I think introducing characters slowly, not bombarding them, is important. We have to grow to love them, and you can't force someone to love something.
Martha: I think it's being handled very well.
Martha:There are so many positive changes. We're getting a new opening to the show, which you'll probably see in a few weeks.
Kelley: That is going to be great. New Music. It is slowly getting a new look. A new costume designer. It is all good.
Martha: Lots of new things!

sherrie1213 asks: Do either of you do any promotions in Europe, because, when I lived there, ATWT was very popular, even though the episodes were 2 years behind.
Martha: I was supposed to go to Holland in June, but they postponed it until next year because they want to televise it.
Martha: We went to Italy a few years ago.
Kelley: That was great!
Martha: Other than that, we don't really tap into that European market, because it's usually on cable there, so it's not a big market.
Kelley: I still think it would be so much if a group of us went for one week. That would be so much fun.
Martha: You can all come see my concert in Holland!

LuvLee2Hold asks: Martha, based on your movie past, have they ever considered a "Lily to the Infinite Power" plot twist?
Martha: You are scaring me!
Kelley: Clones!
Martha: People have unbelievable memories. I just got a fan letter for "Drop Out Father." I did that when I was 12... I'm about to be 30. It's very flattering. I shook my head in amazement that people remember.
Kelley: Oh my!
Martha: "Anna to the Infinite Power", a CBS exec brought in a copy to have me sign the movie.
Kelley: Ah! That is so great.

couturier_2000 asks: Kelley, do you sometimes feel like the character of Molly Conlan is stealing Emily's schtick?
Kelley: No, I don't think they are - they are similar in a lot of ways, but since Emily has come from good stock--has kept me above her. Stealing my schtick - I want to work and I want to work with good story. But if I'm not going to have a decent story right now, I'm just as happy being at home with my daughter right now. She does a great job.

lovelytigerlily asks: Have there been any funny mishaps on the set?
Kelley: We are two different people.
Martha: Too many to name! All I can say is, today on the set, Holden was supposed to be chopping wood, and someone put a rubber hand there.
Kelley: NO!
Martha: And when Julie and Caleb got married, I had a rubber chicken. The gag was, how can we get it in as many shots as possible, in the bushes, under chairs.. I think it made it into 3 on the air.
Kelley: LOL!
Martha: I spend my days plotting how I'm going to laugh.
Kelley: And see if it can be caught in tape.
Martha: Our crew is there from 7am to 7pm every day, and if you can make their life a little lighter, you have to do it. They're there so long and they're great guys.
Kelley: It gets dangerous, because once I get the laugh bug, it becomes six or seven takes because I can't get it together. It is like laughing at a funeral.
Kelley: I can't even look at Benjamin if he is one the set.
Martha: I can't look at him either. I just want to laugh. And Michael Park... I love to work with him, but he makes me laugh all the time.
Kelley: I couldn't. He makes me laugh too much. Laughing is good, though.

turnergalt asks: Are you at all disappointed in how the David/Reid story line played out? I can't believe they didn't let Emily have a shot at him in jail too!
Kelley: I was very disappointed for whatever reason and I'm sure they had reasons to finish the story the way they did. It felt incredibly unresolved, but that was the past. No sense in looking back. You really can't ever say resolved in daytime. He is in jail, not dead.

lovelytigerlily asks: Did either of you receive formal acting training?
Martha: And even if you're dead, it doesn't matter.
Kelley: I went to SMU in Dallas and got my degree. I also got a degree in English and a minor in Art History. I think I've learned more from doing it.
Martha: Mine's always been on the job training. I learned how to act in front of millions of people. Pretty scary, but it's the best training. Sink or swim.
Kelley: Just do it! You don't learn it from books.

MichelleP_97 asks: What story line(S) have been your least favorite to play?
Kelley: One of my least favorite was the Jeff story and it was really unfortunate because he was a great guy. He was a school teacher who had absolutely nothing wrong with him and Emily was suppose to be in love with him. They turned me into Florence Henderson. Nothing wrong with her, but I don't want to be her on ATWT.
Martha: Now would be an interesting time to have Jeff back.
Kelley: He and Chris would like each other too.
Martha: We're creating a story as we're speaking... my least favorite story line, hmm.
Martha: I think when Lily slept with Caleb, Holden's brother, was one of my least favorites.
Martha: It just didn't make sense. It was over before it began. It just didn't work, the audience didn't buy it. I didn't buy it. Michael didn't buy it. But you only know when you try.
Martha: That's what I liked about Doug. If it didn't work, he'd stop it.
Martha: I just didn't think the character would do that, after being in love with Holden so much.
Martha: I remember the good ones better than the bad ones. It's more bad moments than bad stories.
Kelley: I totally remember it - I remember it by what I was wearing at the time.
Martha: I have a good one -- when Mike Casnoff and Lily were in the exercise class together, doing leg lifts. No kidding!
Martha: We were on a mission to find someone, the way beginning of the Umberto hoo-ha, and Sean and I were on the mission, the Mod Squad.
Kelley: It is so over now!
Martha: That's when Mike and Lily should have fallen in love. But it's so over now.

MichelleP_97 asks: Which character would you like to see come back from the past?
Martha: Greg, for me.
Kelley: Wouldn't you love to have him come back for a bit.
Martha: I'd love to see Brian Bloom come back, too.
Kelley: I'd love to see Wiggin come back. I miss him. Jason Biggs.
Martha: I don't think that's gonna happen.
Kelley: No. We can dream.

eoarnf asks: Martha - Who was your favorite husband and why?
Kelley: How many times have you been married?
Martha: I've been married 5 times! My favorite husband would have to be Holden.
Martha: Of course!
Martha: If that didn't work, I wouldn't have a job today. It works.

mtt001 asks: Kelley & Martha: What is Annie Parisse like to work with? Don't you think it would have been a great story line to see Lily, Emily, and Julia all team up and make David pay for everything he did to them?
Martha: That would have been great!
Kelley: Totally! Let the chicks ban together! I still want to do something like that. A real girl power kind of story. She is a great actress, very prepared and funny.
Martha: Very genuine. The genuine quality in the character is Annie.

rsny_1 asks: Would you consider Douglas Marland the best daytime writer of all time?
Martha: Absolutely.
Kelley: Yeah.
Martha: Nobody could tell stories like him. He was a great juggler.
Kelley: Including everybody in the one story! When I first started the show I worked with everybody all the time. We were wound up into one big ball of yarn.
Martha: That's very hard to do.
Kelley: He loved it.
Martha: That was his family.
Kelley: He made you feel like you were the most important thing to the show. Every person was so important.
Martha: Yup. Genuine man.

msbold1 asks: Do you get to ad lib or do you have to stick strictly to the script?
Martha: I'm sure Elizabeth does a lot of ad libbing. They give us a lot of freedom.
Kelley: As long as it makes sense.
Martha: If it's similar to what was on the page.
Kelley: Not too profane.

nedatn asks: What are your most embarrassing moments on the show?
Kelley: I don't really--do I have any? It is kind of hard to be embarrassed in front of anybody because everybody has seen it all. When I had to come out 7 1/2 months pregnant in a body suit to have a love scene with Tom - it didn't get much worse than that. With this belly hanging over Tom! But they are like my family.
Martha: Oh boy. I've had an actor flash me twice by accident. And I'm not saying who it is!
Martha: By accident. Purely by accident.
Kelley: That's worse.

lovelytigerlily asks: Did you watch soaps when you were growing up? If so, what?
Martha: General Hospital. I think everybody watched that show.
Kelley: Huge AMC fan. Never saw ATWT until I auditioned for the show. The first thing I saw was the farm. And I thought what show is this? Who are these hicks? I was so use to Palmer and Daisy Cortlandt!

girliealisa asks: Who are your favorite daytime actors?
Martha: I love Jensen Buchanan. I think she's unbelievable.
Martha: I really like Heather Tom. I always knew she was going to be big, because she's so naturally talented.
Martha: We have a lot of really talented actors on daytime.
Martha: And Larry Bryggman, you don't get much better than him.
Kelley: I always like watching Julie Barr too.

hiway115 asks: Any major story lines coming up that you can let us in on?
Kelley: I know nothing!
Martha: I gave you an idea of where I'm headed. There's going to be a lot of changes as far as relationships. We have a couple of new characters coming on the show. You'll have to wait and see who they end up with!
Kelley: And who they really are!

brianna_11756 asks: If you could become the head writers, what would you change?
Martha: I would see Emma more, the Snyder farm more. Bring back the Snyders. Everybody loves the Snyders. There's a very sweet quality about them.
Martha: There are so many Snyders. You could pick one or two.
Kelley: That is such a tough job trying to incorporating all these characters.
Martha: You understand why you don't see a lot of people a lot of the time, because it's not easy.
Martha: I'd like to see Holden pitching hay more often.
Kelley: Chopping wood, pitching hay.
Martha: Always have John in three-day growth.
Martha: Looks great.
Kelley: It does wonders for the skin.

oh_elizabeth_jade asks: How did each of you get started in show biz?
Kelley: Dance class, piano class, voice class. Put it all together and you got me.
Martha: I went to an open audition for Annie. I got the job, one of the orphans and Annie's understudy. My neighbor Allison Smith was Annie. We're still friends.

jaahroots asks: Do you think Lily and Holden are ever going to have some peace and quiet for a while?
Kelley: The audience would hate that.
Martha: Oh, no! No no no! They won't disappear. We have our moments. It'll be quiet for a little while.
Martha: Has to be interesting, keep it bubbling. This is the longest marriage for Lily, it's been a year.
Kelley: It kills me how many times you've been married and they call me the town tramp.
Martha: My husbands were always causing me problems.

lovelytigerlily asks: How is the actor who plays James? If he gets well do you think he will return to the show?
Martha: We don't really know much about how he's doing right now.
Kelley: He is struggling. Fighting for his life.
Kelley: Just pray hard.
Kelley: Work really kept him going for a long time.

mtt001 asks: Who are some of your funniest co-stars?
Martha: I'm sure that if he were able to you'd see him more often. I think its a difficult time for him right now. Keep your good thoughts for him.
Martha: Benjamin.
Kelley: Benjamin and Scott Holmes.
Martha: When Scott Breis was on the show, between them it was like three kids in a candy store.
Martha: throw Michael park in there for good measure. People like to laugh at him.
Kelley: We like to let him think we are laughing with him.
Martha: Michael Park is a very funny guy he's gotten into that group of Scott and Benjamin, we play cards together and laugh all day

turnergalt asks: What do you think about bringing more AW characters to the show?
Martha: I think it's nice to have them around for visits and things, and I think it's nice to have Tom as a regular. We have so many people already, so it's nice for the audience to have visitors, but we have enough people in Oakdale.
Kelley: Huge cast.
Martha: But visits are great, I know the audience loves that.

madeline_76 asks: Is there another character on the show whom you really enjoy watching as they do their scenes?
Kelley: I agree. It is hard. There are so many people on our show. It isn't that we don't want more people and it is great because our audience knows them. I would like to say the more the merrier, but it is really hard.
Kelley: Maura with Larry I liked to watch.
Martha: And Liz. Liz is always entertaining. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth, which makes it exciting.

cashynn_99 asks: Martha: Have you done any plays?
Martha: I was in Annie when I was a kid. That was really it.

niteflyer_24 asks: Kelly, how did you decide that you wanted to act?
Kelley: I don't remember ever really making the decision. It was just what I wanted to do ever since I was a little girl. I would run around the neighborhood selling tickets to the people for the play all the kids in the neighborhood were putting on.
Martha: Thank you for the support over all the years! hopefully I'll see some of you Friday night. Come say hello if you heard the chat. Keep watching. There's some real exciting things coming up!
Kelley: Ditto!
Kelley: Thank you everybody for your constant support and we hope to see you guys at the Marriott for St Judes.
Martha: SoapCity will be there!
Kelley: Come and meet all of your favorite soap stars.

 Martha and Jon Hensly Chat

martha_byrne: Hello everybody!

jon_hensley: Hello! I'm here.

nisat: You play the "good" character, wouldn't you love to play the bad guy for a change?

martha_byrne: I think always fun to play the bad guy. I don't think Lily would be the bad character but it would be fun play that role somewhere else.

jon_hensley: I agree... I would love to play a role like Molly's role — it's one of the best roles on the show! Also, my wife Kelly's role (Emily).

milwaukee2: Is it difficult working on the set with your wife Keley and do you miss not having a romanctic storyline with her?

jon_hensley: I never see her on set... our storylines never really cross. No, it's not hard, but our characters are just not suited for each other.

nisat:Did you watch soaps before you started working on one?

martha_byrne: I did. I watched "General Hospital" during the Luke and Laura days. That was really the only show that I watched.

jon_hensley: I remember when I was a kid, my mother used to watch "The Doctors" — I was five, and I'd have to sit and suffer through them to get to my cartoons...

jon_hensley: Then I watched Luke and Laura during my senior year of high school.

milwaukee2: Jon your scenes with Lucinda in the wine cellar was one of my favotite holden moments what are some of yours?

jon_hensley: Since I've been back, that was probably the most fun stuff I've had to do. When Lily was in jail, and Diego was around, that was the most fun.

milwaukee2: Your scenes were thrilling during the Diego wedding was thathard to play having the gun issue and the tape device attached to your dress?

martha_byrne: No. It wasn't hard. It was actually a lot of fun. Again, I agree with Jon, that time on the show was some of the best material on the show. Challenging, fun and a lot of work, but in a great way.

jon_hensley: Martha said they should bring them back and do the evil twin brother story!

martha_byrne: But he is dead. We saw him purple in the trunk.

milwaukee2: Why was paolo segantoi written off in the manner he was after he came back to such fanfare?

martha_byrne: The writers thought that was the only way to get him to leave but also leaving him open to come back. It was only supposed to be a short-term.

martha_byrne: It was done that for him to come back in the future.

milwaukee2: Jon, why did you leave ATWT the first time?

jon_hensley: I left 3 times, but the first time I don't even remember... that was many years ago! But I left the 3rd time because I thought after Holden lost his mind/memory, there was no place for Holden to go... he lost his essence. I didn't find him interesting anymore.

nisat: Do you get hounded by fans too much?

martha_byrne: No, not at all. People are very respectful of the characters they see in daytime because we kinda of become like family. People are very considerate. Once in a while you get strange letters. But I think the rule applies that if you respect people they will respect you back.

jon_hensley: I pretty much agree with Martha.... I was in CompUSA today shopping for computer software, and a guy came up and said "I'm routing for Holden and Lily!" and then walked off... That feels good to know what people are thinking.

milwaukee2: Martha, I love hearing you sing, who are your singing inspirations or favorite artists?

jon_hensley: Michael Park!

martha_byrne: Definitely k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt....

martha_byrne: Michael Park — definitely big fan of his.

martha_byrne: I'm influenced by everything and every artist. As an actress/singer it makes you who you are and what you become.

chrisann31: HI there Jon and Martha! I know that you are probably sick of this question but does Holden and Lily end getting married or what??

martha_byrne: Do we have to answer that?

jon_hensley: I refuse to answer that because you have to watch and see for yourself... It's riveting! :)

martha_byrne: It's going to be riveting!

martha_byrne: We can say that an event has been taped for posterity.

nisat: Of all the storylines you have ever done, is there which you are most proud of?

jon_hensley: Uhm... you know today we were going through some old pictures to write captions, and I thought about a lot of stories. I'd have to say the best time was in the beginning — we were both new characters, and we didn't have to do much... the writing was so good that it worked for us (Doug Marlind).

martha_byrne: For me I think, I really like the whole Diego storyline particularly because it was the most challenging for me in a lot of ways. But also the whole Marlena storyline — her whole drugging. It was incredible writing.

jon_hensley: I wasn't there for that... ???

martha_byrne: No, you weren't there. But anytime a story is well written and an actor is challenged by it you'll do good work.

martha_byrne: But I feel like I'm a different person — a different actress than when I started.

martha_byrne: Like Jon said when we were younger the craft of acting was easier, now you have to work a little harder at it.

chrisann31: You two are my favorites on ATWT! I am glad you are both on the show again! Martha, when are you due in real life? I have a 10 mos old boy along with three other kids they are really great and a lot of hard work! Good Luck to you!

martha_byrne: I'm doing on May 15th. So thank you.

stacey123: Jon: I loved the scenes when you first cam back on the motorcycle. Was that fun for you?

jon_hensley: (Laughs) Not really, no... it was 30 degrees and snowing when we taped it, but it looked good to see him coming back on a motorcycle... but not much fun.

stacey123: Do you know if your having a boy or a girl?

martha_byrne: I'll know a week from today... hopefully!

stacey123: Martha: Aren't you and Kelley best friends?

martha_byrne: She's my best friend in the whole world! We're very close.

nisat: What is the weirdest thing you got from a fan?

martha_byrne: Oh, I got something weird... I can't even explain it. It was so weird, it was some sort of manmade exercise equipment. It was strange — had springs and horseshoes on it. It had no letter with it and weighed about 10 lbs. I was very confused.

jon_hensley: I got a naked picture with no return address. :)

poconoprincess: Do you think that Molly will have to become a "Good Girl" or get written off?

martha_byrne: That's a tough question. I don't think it can be any where than it already is.

jon_hensley: I think they like having her as the villain of the show right now, and they have no intention of making her good... they'll just move her on to another victim!

escabible: Martha, how do you make yourself cry in the scenes you cry in?

martha_byrne: Everybody asks me that! I have to say honestly that whatever moves me, I will respond to. If a scene moves me, if an actor says something that makes me emotional, I will respond to it.

martha_byrne: Sometimes the script will say Lily weeps... I...

martha_byrne: I'll ignore that.

milwaukee2: Jon, was it like to be considered a sexy, heartthrob?

jon_hensley: (snickles) First of all, I appreciate anyone who thinks that I'm a sexy heartthrob...

martha_byrne: Now wait a sec... can I say something. Is there anything sexier than a guy who's humble!?

jon_hensley: ...If they want sexy heartthrobs, they'll have to hire someone young on the show...

jon_hensley: ...I never bought into any of that...

martha_byrne: In Jon's defense in a sense, he never thought he was a stud. Always shied away from that. He never was one of those guys who got into the ego thing, bought the press... or because he was on the cover of magazines.

jon_hensley: That is actually the only question that terrifies me because I never know how to answer it.

martha_byrne: But that's the truth, he never bought into that and it would have made it impossible to work with.

jon_hensley: Well Thank you Martha! Thanks for sticking up for me!

martha_byrne: I've seen it happen with other actors who believe the press and they're gorgous and they become complete idiots.

legna7: how long do you have to memorize your lines?

jon_hensley: One night. Before I get on set... It's a day by day thing...

sdfdesign: did either of you think you would become an actor/actress?

martha_byrne: Tomorrow morning. They give us our scripts about a week ahead of time but when you work as much as we do.

jon_hensley: It was always in the back of my mind... I don't tell people this, but I remember when I was 6, I was watching "6 Million Dollar Man" and I wanted to audition for "The Bionic Boy" — I was bound and determined to find my way onto the [small] screen...

martha_byrne: Now I know what I'm getting you for Christmas!

jaydee2: How will they justify Lily's absence during Martha's maternity leave?

martha_byrne: I have no idea. No idea. It hasn't been discussed yet.

legna7: is lily trying to grow her hair out or is she getting a new style?

martha_byrne: Oh, it's more like laziness. Some people say you look thinner when you're pregnant with long hair, or vice versa. But I can't decide what to do yet.

poconoprincess: Will any of the other Snyder clan return for your wedding?

jon_hensley: Yes, we have managed to get a few, but not all... stay tuned to find out!

mjdmkwe: Martha and Jon How does it feel to be a favorite couple on TV?

martha_byrne: Thanks for the compliment!

jon_hensley: Well, Martha and I did an interview about 2 weeks ago and we're asked the same question... we're thrilled that people still care about Holden and Lily!!!

martha_byrne: And kind of put up with the bad times and waited for the good times. Just like we do.... but the viewers don't have to do that. They have to put up with some strange behavior...

martha_byrne: I think it's a testimony to the characters and history that we established all those years ago. Hopefully the viewers feel the same.

milwaukee2: What soap actors work do you admire the most?

martha_byrne: I'm a big fan of Jensen Buchanan on "Another World." I think she is perhaps the most natural actress on daytime TV. I don't think she's been affected by anything negative in all that time. She's maintained her natural ability.

martha_byrne: Michael Park.

martha_byrne: Big fan.

jon_hensley: (Laughs) Since I'm drawing a blank, I'll have to pass... I don't get to watch other shows!

martha_byrne: I'm a real big time daytime person... watch other people's shows. Jon doesn't really do that.

mjdmkwe: When is your next CD out? I have the first and love it...

martha_byrne: I don't know... that's a good question. I'm doing some recording next week. In '98 there should be something, but when I don't know specifically.

stacey123: Jon: I've sent several e-mails to the station asking if you would mind if I created a Jon and Kelley home page.

jon_hensley: Well Stacey123, I've never received your email, and you should just send me a letter: CBS, 51 W. 52nd St., CBS TV, NY, NY, 10019 Attn: As the World Turns.

diegosrevenge: Martha..Jon... Bronson Picket was my absolute FAVORITE actor... tell us about him.

martha_byrne: It's probably him on there!

jon_hensley: Bronson, is that you?

martha_byrne: He was great... He had very good hygiene... which is a very good thing. He was good and a lot of fun, and clean, very clean.

martha_byrne: I've had other co-stars that were unclean.... Jon is also clean.

jon_hensley: Thanks for that!

martha_byrne: I won't name the unclean ones though.

mjdmkwe: I saw your movie with Scott Reeves — any more soon???

martha_byrne: Since I'm very pregnant right now... I'm kind of holding off on the outside work til after the baby is born. I am recording two songs for a feature film with Calissa Lockheart (Ally McBeal).

wendil: Do you get tired of waiting for the "happy ending"?

jon_hensley: There'll never be a happy ending!

martha_byrne: He's right. I think say that I got tired of waiting for these two to be married, I thought it was long overdue.

jon_hensley: They want to keep us active in the story, and they can't do that if we're happy.

martha_byrne: That's the belief.

jon_hensley: I don't know if I believe it, but I think if they just focused on us as a couple, it would be interesting...

martha_byrne: Someday we're going to have to do it... someday deal with each other as a couple and be together or be apart. But I think the audience will always want us together at least for a little while.

jon_hensley: I think they'll end up trying to keep us apart now that we're together.

poconoprincess: What do either of you do when you disagree with something in your script? Can you discuss it with the writers?

martha_byrne: On a day-to-day basis, we can work on our scripts to make them better or more appropriate for the character, but we cannot change overall storyline. It's not our job.

jon_hensley: We can't change the structure of the scene, but we can change the dialogue...

martha_byrne: We can change the intent... I've had scenes with Jon where they were supposed to be happy and we turned it into something with a conflict.

martha_byrne: You have to fight for your character and that's the only thing we have. We know the history. We can't change the structure of the show overall though.

legna7: many compliments on your five o'clock shadow jon, how do you keep it looking so nice????

jon_hensley: (laughs) I don't know... maybe I should try and market it! I really hate to shave, so I welcome the fact that I get to have this shadow... but it's not easy to maintain!

escabible: so Martha, are you going to have your baby first or is Lily going to have hers first?

martha_byrne: I will have mine first. Lily is due at the end of August.

stacey123: Jon: I am a huge fan of yours. Do you participate in the ATWT fan club bowling event?

martha_byrne: Are you kidding? He's the kingpin!

jon_hensley: (BIG LAUGH) You tell me where it is, and I will show up with my bowling ball and shoes!!!

martha_byrne: I've never heard of an "As the World Turns" bowling event. They must have it confused with another show.

mjdmkwe: Lily is a Walsh at Heart... When will Lily us it againgst Molly?

martha_byrne: Actually, the day before Christmas I get to smack her across the face. And I really let her have!

jon_hensley: Did you wallup her good?

martha_byrne: Yes. Jon missed it. He wasn't there that day. I told her I was hitting harder than I had in rehearsal and she said fine. But then when the actual scene came up she swore and so that had to be edited out. They wanted to keep the take.

nisat: What is one of your pet peeves?

martha_byrne: This is my latest one... Since I've been pregnant, I need more room in the garage to get around. I'm not even that pregnant...but it drives me crazy that I have to move the garbage cans around to get in and out of the car. So now they're in front of the dress. You get a lot of pet peeves if your'e pregnant.

martha_byrne: For instance, don't eat my cookies if I've bought them.

jon_hensley: I have no pet peeves... not a one. Ok, maybe the holiday traffic in Manhattan — that got me rattled, sitting in a cab for 40 minutes!

martha_byrne: You have a lot of food pet peeves.

martha_byrne: He's very picky about his food... very peevey... I'm a witness to that.

jon_hensley: That's not a pet peeve, just a preference...

martha_byrne: Very specific... For instance if the ice cream isn't creamy enough, throw it away.

jon_hensley: I don't even eat ice cream!

mjdmkwe: What is it like to work with Elizabeth Hubbard?

martha_byrne: She's the best. The most fun. She opened me up as an actress... I was like a little clam when I came onto the show. I had come from a very strict film background where you say your lines exactly as written on your mark and go home. Elizabeth, on my first day, tickled me, slapped me on the butt and completely frightened me, but she really loosened me up and I learned a lot about acting from her.

martha_byrne: She gave me freedom to play and to learn... I'm very fortunate that I had her as a teacher early on. With young actors and actresses, if you don't have positive influences you never become the best. Elizabeth is simply the best and I love her!

jon_hensley: The great thing about working with Liz, is whenever I work with her, I know the scene will become something different than what was on the printed page, and that goes out the window!

jon_hensley: You never know what to expect, and it's so much fun working with her!

nisat: Given the chance, what other actor or actress would you love to work with?

martha_byrne: You know I really like Helen Hunt a lot. I would really like to work with her. The obvious people I think... just to have the chance to meet a Meryl Streep, to talk to her... If you do a movie with her, you could basically retire acting-wise. That's one thing Elizabeth Hubbard taught me, if you think you've learned everything than you probably should quit. Acting is always learning.

jon_hensley: I haven't seen many performance that I like lately — but I haven't seen many movies — but right now, I like Ray Fiennes and Daniel Day Lewis — I think they're great.

martha_byrne: Yeah, me too. I would love to do a movie with Quentin Tarantino. That would be awesome. He's an actor's director, you can just tell.

legna7: do you have any brothers or sisters in real life?

jon_hensley: I have a brother and a sister, and neither is in the business. I'm the oldest.

selzer: Jon, it seems like you have a ball with M. Park. What is he like?

martha_byrne: I have two sisters and a brother — all older than me. Six nicies and nephews — 3 boys and 3 girls.

jon_hensley: Michael is really a pain in the neck (!). He's a big baby when it comes down to it.

martha_byrne: (LAUGHS) He's a woman... when it comes to work, he's a woman.

jon_hensley: I love him like a brother.

martha_byrne: He works really hard. He has a great energy.

jon_hensley: He has a great enthusiasm for the work...

martha_byrne: It's always great to have someone who's new and new energy and has fun, instead of complaining like a lot of us do. He really loves his job. He can be goofy... He asks for it.

jon_hensley: Yeah, he does...

martha_byrne: But someday he'll be an old hat and he can make fun of us — well, he tries to make fun of us now but it doesn't go over.

escabible: do the writers ever change the way a storyline is going based on the fan mail they receive about the dislike of the storyline?

martha_byrne: I think in the past that has happened. Not as much recently as it used to. I feel that there is a line between what a fan really dislikes and what they really love. And I think the communciations gets confusing to the higher ups. For instance the character of Carly — she's the type of character that people love to hate... I never underestimate the fans because the tend to verbalize...

jon_hensley: It's really hard to change stories just because of fans, because they write up to 8 months in advance.

martha_byrne: I think sometimes they should. If something isn't working, just stop it. Sometimes it happens, but not often. I think we should read our audience and listen to them, they know what they like and don't like from watching the show.

stacey123: Jon: How's the golf game?

martha_byrne: It's his New Years Resolution!

jon_hensley: Terrible. The more lessons I take, the worse I get... I'm threatening to quit! That's it... If I don't get better by March, I'm quitting...

martha_byrne: I'm on maternity leave... What are you going to do — you better find something else to do.

martha_byrne: I'll say goodbye... for all the Lily and Holden fans, be patient you'll be enjoying yourselves!

jon_hensley: Thanks very much for all the love and support over the years... Stay tuned for the wedding, you just might get your wish this year!

jon_hensley: Good night!
