Other ways of Myopia correction

Intracorneal plastic rings

A small cut is made in cornea. From there tunnels are made in the corneal layers on either sides. Two surgical plastic rings are inserted in these tunnels , on either sides. This flattens the central cornea. Useful for very low myopia only.

Advantage:

Safe

Short procedure

Quick recovery.

Reversible to some extent.

Disadvantage:

Long term results not known.

Clear lens extraction

If the lens is removed, its refractive component will be lost, and rays will focus on the retina - that was the idea. But in reality, it is not that simple, loss of lens leads to loss of focusing power, making it difficult to read.

Moreover surgeries in those high myopes has a greater risk of retinal detachment.

This surgery is now mostly condemned.

Phakic IOL (INTRAOCULAR LENS)

A negative powered IOL is inserted surgically above the lens, this gives a focus on the retina.

Problems:

Earlier cataract

Inflammation of the iris, adhesions in the eye and chances of glaucoma.
