Visual field testing machine is called a perimeter.

The automated perimeter takes about 20 min for testing each eye. One eye is covered. The chin is positioned. With the open eye, person is supposed to look at the center without moving the eye. Lights twinkle in various directions. When the lights are seen, the person, presses a switch button, to say 'yes'. The machine records the signal and gives a print-out of your field.

A simple way to test visual field is-

You close your left eye. Your friend sits opposite you and closes his right eye. You stretch your hand and bring your index finger from out to in slowly and let him tell you when he sees it. You have tested his visual field!

Visual field is decreased in Glaucoma and brain disease.
