General Information

We are one of the largest sports clubs in the athletic union of The University of Liverpool. We field 3 teams who play every week on Wednesdays in the B.U.S.A (British Universities Sports Association) competition against other Universities, Colleges or Polytechnics situated in the North of England. We also field 2 teams that play on Saturdays in the N.W.H.L (North West Hockey League), against other regional hockey clubs, our 1st team is currently in Division 1 and our 2nd team is in Division 5 North.

We have two floodlit, sand-based astroturfs that are situated at the Wyncote University Sports Ground and training is held there twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. All new information regarding team selection, fixtures and social events will be posted on the Men's Hockey Notice Board daily or can be found on this web-site.

All people wishing to play for the Men's Hockey Club will be required to pay an annual membership fee of £15. Additionally all players must be members of the Athletic Union otherwise you will not be eligible for selection, permanent accident insurance, free treatment at the Sports Injury Clinic or any Colours Award form the University.

Although the Men's and Women's Hockey clubs are not combined, we do have close links with them both on and off the field and together we take part in mixed hockey tournaments throughout the year, the most notable of which is The Ben Hinch Memorial Tournament. We also combine many of our social events such as; A.U. Disco Nights, Initiation of Freshers, The Christmas Dinner, Pub Golf and not forgetting the Annual Old Boys and Girls Hockey Ball.

Directions

Men's Hockey Club Notice Board

It is vital that you check this board regularly as all new information regarding team selection, fixtures and social events will be posted here daily. The notice board is situated in the Guild of Students on Mount Pleasant and is on the 1st floor near the A.U. Office. If you go up the stairs that are opposite Campus Travel to the 1st floor and then turn left you will find a corridor that is full of notice boards, the men's hockey notice board is at the end of this corridor.

Astroturf pitches at Wyncote

We have two floodlit, sand-based astroturf pitches that are situated at the Wyncote University Sports Ground. All training and home matches will take place here and the ground is situated next door to Tesco's on Mather Avenue and may be accessed by turning into the road next to the cricket pavilion. The three following maps show directions to Wyncote from Carnatic & Greenbank Halls of Residence, the City Centre & the University Precinct and the M62 motorway.

When you get to the end of M62 (West) filter off left on to Queens Drive (A5058), continue straight along this road over the first roundabout. When you get to the second roundabout, do not turn down Menlove Avenue but take the next left onto Allerton Road, then continue along this road and bear right when it becomes Mather Avenue (B5180). The ground can be seen next door to Tesco's on the other side of the road. A car park is situated behind the astroturf.

Training Sessions

Weekly training sessions are at the Wyncote astroturf pitches and start at the following times: -

7.30pm-9.30pm

Individual Training for each team

Training will start promptly at the times stated so arrive changed and ready to play. It is vitally important that all players turn up to training as team selection will be based on those players who have attended each training session during the week. If you can't attend a particular training session you must contact either the Club Captain, or your particular team captain to inform them why you can't attend and whether you will be available to play any matches during the week. Contact numbers can be found on the Men's Hockey Club notice board or on this web-site.

Monday Training sessions will comprise 2 hours of Ball Skill & fitness training, which will be taken by Tony Godbold, for these exercises all teams will train together. The training on Thursdays lasts 11/2 hours and is taken by each team captain who will concentrate on set pieces, such as short corners.

Matches

Team sheets for Wednesday matches will be posted on the notice board on the Friday before the match and team sheets for Saturday matches will be posted on the notice board on the Tuesday before the match (N.B. team sheets will not be posted on the web-site). All players who have been selected to play a match for a particular team must tick their name off on the team sheet and those players who are unavailable to play must contact the particular team captain immediately so that a replacement player may be found. If you can't play a match and haven't contacted the team captain prior to the match or not turned up to a match (without a good reason), you will be dropped for the next match. Team sheets will also state the meeting and push back time for each match.

All home matches will be played at the University Sports Ground Wyncote and players are expected to arrive ready and changed. Transport will be arranged for away matches and relevant details will be posted on the team sheet.

All players who played more than half of a match will be required to pay full match fees of £2.50. Those players who play less than half the match will pay £1 and those players who did not play at all will not pay any match fees. It is also advisable to bring some money with you, as we will have a few drinks after the match in the bar. At away matches food will be provided by the opposition free of charge while at home matches food will also be available for a moderate charge.
