Our Birds

Shown above: Anita and Hannah tend to our aviary in the fall of '97. We breed cockatiels as a hobby and enjoy it a great deal. These little parrots make wonderful pets, and are not too difficult to breed.

Cockatiels are native to Australia, and are the smallest of the cockatoos. They are first known to have been imported to England in 1840 by ornithologist John Gould.  They have since became nearly as common around the world as another Aussie parrot, the budgie or "parakeet".  Another link between these two little types are that they come from arid regions where they live in large flocks, and are among the hardiest of all parrots.
