JAMES C. JOHNSON

After WILLIAM DAVID and LEROY JOHNSON died in the Civil War, the next oldest in the Johnson family household was JAMES C. JOHNSON. Born on Nov. 3rd, 1843 in Ozark, Alabama, he joined the Confederate Army and served primarily with the 53rd AL Infantry. There is some indication he married young to Sarah A. (_Unk_) as she is buried at Barnes Cemetary in Ozark with the inscription "Wife of James C. Johnson" (Her birthdate is listed as Feb. 18th, 1848 and died July 20th, 1866). If this was the case, there are no known children from this marriage and we note her death was very soon after the War and only 4 months after Daniel's death. We do know however that James married SUSAN H. (DUNSON) who is buried at the Union City Cem. in Ozark. They had 8 known children. James lived in Ozark until around 1884 when he moved to nearby Andulusia. Around the turn of the century, he moved his family to Florala where he worked as a Justice of the Peace. It is noted he was a freemason and was very close to his good friend Moses George who was probably a war buddy and fellowmason. Moses ended up marrying one of James' children, Susan "Pet" Petis. James' wife died on May 2, 1884 and 5 years later, on Aug. 27th, 1889, he married FRANCES A. (STALLINGS) from Oaky Streak, Alabama. James retired at the age of 63 from hernia problems and died on July 24th, 1910 in Florala, AL (named because it sits on the state border with Florida). He is buried in the City Cemetary next to his wife Frances, several of his children, incl. Susan Pet Petis who is buried alongside Moses George.
