Ann:  Here's my notes on Hartwell Vick Smith and Caroline Eliza Lewis Smith:

         Hartwell Vick4 Smith, son of Nancy P. and Edward3 Smith (Edward2, Edward1), born 3 August 1806 in Greensville County, VA; died 21 October 1878; buried in the Francis Lewis Cemetery, Lowndesboro, Lowndes County, AL (behind and to the left of the Ray Randolph home); married 2 May 1828 in VA, Caroline Eliza Lewis. They are not listed on the 1830 Lowndes County census

 

On the 1840 Lowndes Co. census:  H. V. Smith

On 23 March 1831, Hartwell V. Smith and his brother, Byrd C. Smith, of Lowndes County, AL, bought Lot No.2 on the East side of Broad Street and North side of Water Street, and Lot No.15 on the west side of Academy Street and North side of Water Street, each containing ˝ acre,  in the town of McGills Hill, for $97 from Nathan Fields.[1]

 

Hartwell V. Smith witnessed a Will on 10 October 1834 of a Bartholomew Smith (probated 4 November 1834) of the “Village of Lowndesboro”).[2]

            Slaves:  7 males under 10; 10 males 10-24; 8 males 24-36; 1 male 55-100; 8 females under 10; 8 females 10-24; 6 females 24-36; 1 female 35-55; total: 57

30 engaged in agriculture; one in learned professions and engineers [Dr. Hartwell V. Smith].

 

The 23 April 1841 Montgomery Advertiser listed Hartwell as the President of the Lowndesboro Academy.[3]

 

On 1 October 1849 in the Lowndes County Minutes of the Orphans Court was recorded the petition of Hartwell V. Smith and Hamlin F. Lewis, administrators of the Estate of Henry D. Lewis, deceased, to sell 1,024.5 acres of land in Township 15, Range 12.[4] Henry Dudley Lewis, born in October 1806 in GA, son of Francis and Mary Dixon Hall Lewis, was the brother of Caroline E. Lewis, Hartwell’s wife.[5]

 

The 1850 Lowndes County census shows at House No. 1076:

 

            Smith, H. V., 43, born in VA; planter

                        Caroline, 32, female, born in VA

                        Eugenia H., 14, female, born in AL

                        H. V., 5, male, born in AL

                        Henry L., 3, male, born in AL

            Rambo, J. A., 33, male, born in S.C.; planter

 

Hartwell Vick Smith received on 15 AUG 1865 a pardon from the President under Exception 13 of the Amnesty Proclamation after the War Between the States.[6]

 

Hartwell V. Smith executed a Will on 18 May 1872, witnessed by Shemie Gresham and Stephen A. Pilley, naming his wife, Caroline E., daughters, Eugenia H. Douglas and Adelia Gunter, and sons, Henry Lane and Edwin P. Smith. 

 

Then on 30 July 1873, he executed a Codicil, witnessed by E. A. Smith and S. H. Smith, naming son Edwin P. and friend, I. H. Hall, as co-executors.

 

A second Codicil was executed on 30 April 1875, witnessed by H. H. Whetstone and F. L. Lamkin, revoking “that part of my Will which gives my daughter, Eugenia H. Douglas an equal interest with the rest of the Heirs to share and share alike…” 

 

Then on 12 May 1875 a third Codicil, witnessed by H. H. Whetstone and F. L. Lamkin, naming as his heirs his wife, Caroline E., and son, Edwin P. Smith.  Hartwell V. died on 21 October 1878 and his Will and Codicils were probated on 12 December 1878.[7]

Notice is hereby given that H.L. SMITH, E. P. SMITH and Caroline E. SMITH qualified as executors of the estate of H.V. SMITH on the 10th day of December 1878.  Notice is hereby given to all parties indebted to said estate to make immediate payment, and those having claims against the same to present them within the time prescribed by law, or they will be barred.  J.V. McDUFFIE, Judge of Probate
