The Scarlet Pimpernel

The Minskoff Theatre

April 21, 1998

Well, if you've read this far, then you may know that I have been going to musical theater all my life, since about age 8 or so...and was brought up in Washington, DC - about 200 miles south of New York City.  And yet - I had never ever been to an actual show ON Broadway, or even inside a Broadway theatre!

I had seen many pre-Broadway shows and countless shows on tour, seen lots of stars, worked as a dresser backstage during Jeff's few years on stage, bought endless recordings...and after traveling for 20 years with Merrill while he was on active duty with the U.S. Navy...we finally settled down in Bremerton, Washington - about as far away from NYC as one can get and still be in the continental USA!

And then, for the first time ever, in April of 1998, we traveled more than 100 miles to see a show!  Not just one show either - but 9 shows in 8 days!  And the very first one we saw was "THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL!"

We enjoyed all 9 shows - "The Scarlet Pimpernel", "Lion King", "Titanic", "Ragtime", "Forever Tango", "Forbidden Broadway" and all 3 times that we saw "Jekyll and Hyde" - but we are going to always be glad that "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was the first!

For one thing, we loved the show - and for another we loved the music, the costumes, the story, the sets and the cast - but most of all - we loved Douglas!

What an incredible, exciting, unforgettable night at the theatre!  Thanks go to Frank Wildhorn - Nan Knighton - a magnificent cast - and especially to Douglas Sills!

And in an odd and sort of roundabout way - thanks also go to Robert Cuccioli who was the inspiration for our trip in the first place - and also to Michael Ball who was the inspiration for our first Ballfesting trip and Ballfesting in general!
