MEETING ROBERT AT LAST!

Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde

Original Broadway Cast

US 1995 National Tour

As mentioned earlier, we had seen Robert in J&H in 1995, and having finally figured out that he would probably never tour with the show again, we decided that if we ever wanted to see him, than we were going to have to go to New York City - which was a pretty darn good idea, as things turned out!  This photo was taken just after we had seen "Scarlet Pimpernel" (which is covered in another section.)  Hence the SP program I am clutching!  Also note - that is a pen in Robert's hand, not a cigarette!

We had traveled about 3500 miles - primarily to see Robert in J&H again - but that was to be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - the 1st Anniversary weekend!  However, it's a darn good thing we got to see and talk to him on Tuesday, when he was not swamped by other fans, as he was stricken and lost his voice entirely during Thursday's performance, and ordered to not even open his mouth for a week!  Since we were leaving on the next Tuesday, our chances of seeing him perform seemed to have vanished!

That resulted in our seeing Rob Evan on Friday, we skipped Saturday's show to see "Forever Tango" and saw Frank Mastrone on Sunday.  We traded in our second row - left side Saturday seats, and took a chance that Robert would do the actual anniversary show on Tuesday, April 28th, 1998 - and happily he did!  Unfortunately, our new tickets were for the 1st row balcony - right side - but at least we did get to see him perform again - finally!  There was such a mob, we didn't even attempt to talk to him again, but did get a few nice pictures!  We spoke briefly to Douglas Sills and Frank Wildhorn, who were both in the crowd and then we had to leave and pack for the next leg of our trip.

Another favorite picture!

The next time we saw Robert was at the S.T.A.G.E. concert in Los Angeles, in March of 2000,  and that was an unexpected but lovely surprise!  (See our L.A. Ballfest photos for those pictures.)

We are both so glad that we took that trip in 1998 - it has led us down many new and different paths, having met some wonderful people from the Michael Ball amulation list, the Jekyll and Hyde mailing list, The League mailing list and many, many cast members from the various shows we saw!

Footnote:  We have 6 magnets on our fridge with photos of Robert, and six more of Michal Ball.  Our granddaughter who is 5 now, has enjoyed them for the year she has been back in our area.  One of the first things she always does when she comes to visit, is to point to each one - and she can be heard all over the house: Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael followed by Robert Robert Robert Robert Robert Robert.  (and we did NOT teach her that - she simply asked who they were...and the rest just happened - honest!)
