My Biography

By Theresa Storey

Beaumont, Texas USA

Originally I am a native of St. Louis, Missouri, where I was born in 1973 and lived until my dad moved us to Oklahoma City in 1984.  I am the oldest of four kids, I have one sister Katherine, and two bothers,  Joseph and Laurence.  My family's ancestry is primarily German which you wouldn't guess by the Scottish last name; our Scotch ancestor came to America in 1690 and settled in New Jersey.  My great, great grandfather moved West settling his family in Missouri in the late 1800's and that is where our family has primarily stayed.

When we were growing up my parents tried to expose us to a little of everything.  I have been to different places in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Texas.  My mom taught me how to do cross stitch embroidery; (which is the only sewing I can do), baking and I even know how to make homemade pickles and preserves.  She encouraged us to enter our  baking and other crafts in the state fair and I have quite a few ribbons (including a few 1st place) from both junior and adult division categories. The only things I really inherited from my dad are a dry sense of humor and a love for reading.   I took piano lessons for five years and still play for my own enjoyment; occasionally I can be coaxed into playing for other people.  My music collection includes a who's who of Broadway and Movie composers and shows; I do have some contemporary music too.  I was also a Girl Scout for ten years earning my Silver Award in eighth grade and I served as a page in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives during Girl Scout week in 1988.

I graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1991 and from Oklahoma City University in 1995 with a BA in History and a minor in Spanish.  My history interests are primarily United States history, military history, particularly World War II, and popular culture.  I did my senior research paper on Dwight Eisenhower, and did a couple of papers on films made during World War II, and others on Fred Astaire, and Katharine Hepburn.  I was also president of our campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honor society; I presented papers at two conferences while in college.  In May 1999 I  received my  Master of  Library & Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma.  My interests in library school included government documents, archives, automated systems and cataloging.  I moved to Texas in Feb. 2000 to work at Lamar University as a Documents /Reference Services Librarian.  I primarily work with government documents but I also do some cataloging and answer reference questions.

I spend my free time playing piano, working on embroidery projects, watching movies, and reading.  I primarily like to read biographies, history books, an novels.  I would have to say my favorite authors are Stephen Ambrose, Jane Austen, Mary Stewart and Lloyd C. Douglass.  I also enjoy going to shows and concerts.  I have seen the touring productions of "Showboat", "A Chorus Line" and of course, "Les Miserables".  I also went to a number of music theater and theater productions at O C U; it was one of the school's primary programs of study.  I have seen two great composers, Henry Mancini and Marvin Hamlisch,  conduct the Oklahoma City Symphony.  My other favorite singers besides Michael Ball and Michael Crawford include Perry Como, Andy Williams, Jim Reeves, and Vince Gill.  I prefer to watch old movies with my favorite stars being Cary Grant, James Stewart and Fred Astaire.
