For Celebrities, Global Learning

The key ingredients of a recent United Nations two-day summit
in New York City was the 43 celebrity messengers of Peace and
Goodwill Ambassadors from around the globe received a crash
course in world issues from poverty eradication to peacekeeping
to politics. Among the attendees : Geri Halliwell (Spice Girl),
Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon movies), Angelina Jolie and
Roger Moore -each has a specific area of focus.

Whether it was fighting AIDS, saving the environment, improving
diets for children with iodine pills or helping refugees, "They are
very earnest," says Kevin Kennedy, a member of U.N. Secretary
General Kofi Annan's staff. " They eager to be taken seriously in
the issues they address."

We're not talking Hollywood fact time either. "Peter Ustinov has
been doing this since 1968, Harry Belafonte since 1987," says
Kennedy. "Many have put in 10 years or more on the beat."
The benefit? "If Roger Moore does an appearance, the word
gets out about iodine supplements. It becomes a public service
announcement."

MTV-ASIA

Filipino chanteuse Regine Velasquez has joined the
Speak Your Mind cause in Philippines.

Velasquez took time off her busy schedule to examine the issues
surrounding "children in need of special protection," a term used by
UNICEF to describe children in difficult circumstances. They are the
abandoned children who need love and shelter. They are the abused
children in need of protection from abuse and violence at home. They
are the street children -- living and/or working on the streets. They
are the working little ones who risk life and limb in hazardous work
environments. To explore the issues in depth, Regine visited the
community in Payatas, one of the biggest garbage dumps in Manila, and
joined street educators on the streets of Manila.
