Case Study: Petroleum

Oil & Engineers

Not long after the origins of the petroleum industry a new profession emerged on the American continent. In 1888 technical schools, such as M.I.T., began teaching a cross between mechanical engineering and chemistry, with the emphasis most definitely on engineering. These early chemical engineers and the growing petroleum industry formed a powerful alliance.

Today, half of all chemical engineers are employed by the petroleum industry. During the 20th Century, these engineers made significant contributions to that industry. As such, the petroleum industry owes a debt of gratitude to the chemical engineering profession. However, the chemical engineer must also thank the petroleum industry for the high wages and prestige it has brought to the profession.
