 Waters Association of Vexillology.

We are an association dedicated to the scholarly pursuit of flag research. Our primary area of interest is in our member states; Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. We meet twice a year, in May and November. We publish The Journal of Great Waters Association of Vexillology biannually in June and December.

Follow the links above to read our journal, learn about the flags and seals of our member states, visit our favorite sites, contact our members, or apply for membership.

If you are interested in joining please print out the membership application and mail it in with your annual dues.

The Great Waters Association of Vexillology was founded May 11, 1991, in Kettering, Ohio, where five members of the North American Vexillological Association from Michigan and Ohio met with the intention of forming a regional chapter of NAVA to be known as the Great Waters Chapter. Inasmuch as NAVA subsequently voted not to establish chapters, on November 6, 1992, the name was changed to Great Waters Association of Vexillology, also known by its acronym, GWAV (pronounced gwave). The name Great Waters was proposed by member Glenn Nolan, as suggestive of the Great Lakes and Ohio River that link the states that make up the geographical region covered by GWAV.

GWAV was established to give vexillologists in the region an opportunity to meet on a regular basis in order to exchange information and ideas concerning the study of flags. Persons living in the region may join as active members, having voting privileges, and may hold office in GWAV. Persons living outside the region may join as associate members, but do not vote or hold office, although they are welcome at all meetings.

Meetings are held in May and November each year at various sites in the GWAV region, often at the homes of members. Following a brief business meeting, there is usually a program, refreshments, and a "show and tell" period to exchange information about flags. Click here for the next meeting.

GWAV publishes FlaGWAVer, the association's newsletter, twice yearly, in June and December. The newsletter is primarily concerned with flags of the region, but attention is paid to flags of elsewhere. Members receive  FlaGWAVer  as part of their membership.  Click here to go to the Journal.

GWAV has hosted 4 NAVA meetings, Follow the links above for more information.
