Catalina 22 Rigging Setup

     1.   BOW CHAIN PLATE -- anchor from under side to bow eye with turnbuckle.

    2.   LOWER SHROUDS -- add backup plates to bottom side of deck fittings. an alternate is to attach a turnbuckle from lower shrouds to the bulkhead where it attaches to the liner, to give a more solid deck.

    3.   MAST ALIGNMENT -- adjust uppers to equal distance on both sides by measuring from mast head to deck fitting.

    4.   SHROUD ADJUSTMENT -- tension to give 3" to 4" forward bend in middle of mast with maximum backstay adjustment and no side bend when under sail close hauled.

    5.   FORESTAY -- adjust length to give slight weather helm when sailing close hauled in light air. Shorten for less helm.

    6.   BACKSTAY -- should be split with at least four to one purchase to give enough adjustment to control forestay sag and mast bend. the lighter the wind, the less adjustment on backstay, thus less mast bend and more draft in main.

    7.   HALYARDS -- main and Genoa halyards should have some means of adjusting tension while under sail, at least four to one purchase. Spinnaker halyard does not need extra purchase but should have cleat close at hand for fast cleating as soon as s spinnaker is hoisted.

    8.   MAIN OUTHAUL -- should have at least four to one but preferably eight to one purchase to adjust foot of main.

    9.   MAIN CUNNINGHAM -- at least two to one purchase to adjust luff of main.

 10.   BOOM VANG -- at least four to one purchase to adjust leach of main and control lift of boom while not close-hauled and hold boom down during jibe.

 11.   MAIN REEF -- set up for slab reefing.

 12.   TOPPING LIFT -- holds up boom in light air or during reefing. a second alternative is a boom kicker.

 13.   GENOA TRACK -- both outboard and inboard track if possible.

 14.   BARBER HAUL -- used to bring in clew of Genoa when inboard track is not available.

 15.   GENOA CARS -- should have some means of easy adjustment while under sail.

 16.   TRAVELER -- should have adjustment to move traveler from side to side.

 17.   SPINNAKER SHEET BLOCKS -- should be attached at outboard stern of boat close to aft cleats.

 18.   TWEEKERS -- used to change angle of spinnaker guy to keep off uppers while on beam reach and choke down spinnaker on runs in high wind.

 19.   POLE TOPPING LIFT -- put turning block at least as high as spreaders to lift spinnaker pole.

 20.   POLE FOREGUY -- put block at base of mast to hold down the spinnaker pole.

 21.   POLE BRIDLE -- used to attach topping lift and fore guy to spinnaker pole for end-to-end jibing.
