I dreamt of you last night
That I was lying beside you
Holding your hand in mine
Whispering comforting words to you whilst you slept.
Telling you how beautiful you are to me.
I watch your breast gently rise, gently fall
Feeling each heartbeat as my own
Holding your precious heart in my hands
And softly giving you life
I lie here counting each hair of your head,
I know each one by heart
I know how many there are.
Yet still I count them every night
Noticing how they change and grow
How they move each time you breathe
How they adapt to the lie of your sheets.
I watch as you wet your lips
And open your mouth,
Searching for the water to quench
And I watch as your mouth closes
As I reach out my hand to you.
I watch while your eyelids flicker and shake
And observe each trembling eyelash.
Loving you as your eye moistens
And an involuntary tear slides down your face
Along every contour and pore
And I catch it.
I see how you twitch your nose
How that stray hair gets in the way
And how precious you look
When you can't see
And can't comprehend what's going on
Yet sleep safely, securely throughout.

I see through your face
And into your dreams.
I'm with you when you're awake,
But when you're asleep I revel,
As you release your human boundaries
And dare to dream
As I release your inhibitions and fears
And we dance among the flowers.
And when that dark shadow crosses your mind
(And your nose crinkles)
I reach out and hold you tight
I help you weather the storm.
Often helping you crawl
Sometimes carrying you in my arms
And when the darkness disappears
I remain.

As the sun begins to crack it's way in
Through the clouds
Through the curtains
I watch your changing expressions
And I listen to each unique breath
Your eyelids flicker faster
As you begin to wake
I watch you stretch and yawn,
Giving you freedom to move,
Seeing you rub sleep from your eyes
And holding you still
Through another day.
