This Month’s Letters To The Editor

Dear Fausta,
Do you still have that picture of Mr. Rickman and the marble bust from a few years ago?
Signed,
An admirer of the classics

Dear fellow admirer of the classics
I certainly do! You can also find it at

Ask The Rickmaniac

This month’s Consulting Rickmaniac is Nele, from Estonia

Dear Nele,
It seems that I have been stranded on a deserted island. I have, however, with me a computer (and an Internet connection), a VCR and a TV set, and a credit card. I would like to order some good movies, to keep me company. Which ones would you suggest?
Signed: Someone is somewhere out there!

Dear Someone,
Since you have obviously made up your mind to stay on the island -- instead of leaving it with the ship that will deliver your order -- you should choose the films you'll enjoy both now and in the future. A good choice is, of course, Truly Madly Deeply, which is perfect for the days you feel lonely, and, well, deserted. Another is Sense & Sensibility - it's fun and optimistic. Should you prefer action, I'd suggest either Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, or Die Hard. Or both.

Dear Nele,
It's raining outside, but I am in an immediate need of a Mr. Rickman film. What should I do? I don't want to go outside, as I hate getting soaked.
Signed: Desperate in rain.

Dear Desperate,
Too bad! It seems you only have three choices: make do without that video (I know, that's the hard choice), go out and get wet, or send someone else -- a husband, children, a friend, a dog -- to get it.

Dear Rickmaniac,
I would love to teach Mr. Rickman a foreign language. Do you think he'll be interested in one, say Estonian?
Signed: An Admirer

Dear Admirer,
Certainly it is worth imagining. As we all know, Mr. Rickman has a voice which makes every word he says worth listening to - and in a foreign language this might become even more interesting. You might have a few phrases handy, such as "Call me Eustacia" (in Estonian that would be "Kutsu mind Eustaciaks"), or, if you are a Sheriff of Nottingham fan, "I'll be ready by 10:45, George" ("Ootan sind kolmveerand üksteist, Jüri") - just in case…

Packing

Debbie wrote, saying,

Hi Fausta!
Hope you're fine. Are you dying from the heat like everybody else, or is it missing your area?
I sent the bit below to Renie because we have discovered we're both notorious over-packers when we go on holidays, and she asked me to sent it to you. She thought it would be a good entry for the August Rickmanista, since so many of us Rickmaniacs are going on holiday these days.
Take care,
Deb

Debbie's packing routine:

1) Calculate how many days you'll be away and how many outfits you'll need.
2) Double that number and pack everything you own. (This includes *every* AR audiotape you own, since you cannot decide which is your favourite.)
3) Attempt to lift suitcase.
4) Stand and stare at suitcase in hopes that it will repack itself and lose several pounds in the process.
5) Take everything out of suitcase and start over.
6) Hum and haw over what goes and what stays. (Make sure to devote an appropriately long time to this.)
7) Consider leaving *a few* AR tapes at home, but decide you just can't live without them.
8) Hide a few of your very favourite AR photos in the side pockets of your suitcase *where only you can find them*. (Haven't you always wondered what those little side pockets were for? ;-)
9) Pack original number of outfits before you doubled it.
10) Lift suitcase and wonder why it's no lighter.
11) Realie that you have not yet packed such extras as underwear, cosmetics, jammies .....
12) Leave the suitcase for a time, hoping that it will miraculously become lighter as it sits.
13) The night before you are to leave, decide you just can't live without something you have not packed.
14) Take everything out of suitcase and start again.
15) Driving to airport: Sit in car thinking, Rats! I should have brought this; I should have brought that; Geez, I could really have left that at home.....
16) At your holiday destination: Wear one-third the number of outfits packed. Kick yourself for not packing the outfit you decided to leave at home. Listen to only part of a tape (because of privacy / time constraints, not lack of interest!)
Isn't travelling fun? ;-)
