Interrogation Night
NAME - Interrogation Night E-MAIL - NapsterAltoids@hotmail.com SPOILERS - None. SUMMARY - Dean comes to the weekly Friday night dinner.
RATING - G CONTENT - Well, it's a just a happy story with no swearing or anything.
PAIRING OR CHARACTER - It's R/D, but it could be in the General category. DISCLAIMER - I don't own any of the characters, plots, settings, etc. of "Gilmore Girls." All the dandy people at the WB and Amy Sherman-Palladino and her workers do. And I'm thankful for that because I'm simply not talented or smart enough to write anything nearly as good as the show. So all I own is this story.
"So what's your grandmother like?" Dean asked in the car on the way to the Friday night dinner.
"Over-bearing, controlling, insane-"
"Mom, stop! Grandma is not like that!"
"Well, I'm positive on the first two. We're running tests to confirm the insanity part."
Ignoring her mother, Rory answered the original question, "She's a little....old-fashioned. She might drill you with questions, but she's not bad."
"What kind of questions?"
"Your date of birth, social security number. You know, the usual kind of FBI questions."
"Ah. Well, I better get out my social security card to memorize the number."
"And she could ask you to state it backwards! Better memorize backwards while you're at it," Lorelai interrupted.
Wednesday evening Emily had called. Rory had mentioned last Friday that she and Dean were back together, and since they seemed to be somewhat serious, she wanted to meet Dean. Although they had met before Rory's dance, Emily wanted to know Dean better. Dean was a part of Rory's life, and she wanted nothing more than to be involved with Rory's life.
Rory was nervous about asking Dean to come to dinner because they had only recently reconciled, and well, her grandmother wasn't always the most hospitable person. She saw how she was before the dance, but Rory didn't want her grandmother upset that Dean didn't come. It would only lower her opinion of him. So here she was in the car with Dean and her mother on the way to their way to the weekly dinner.
"How long does it take to get there?" Dean asked.
"About 35 minutes. We're only a few minutes away," Rory said.
------
At the Front Door "Ready?" Lorelai questioned, aiming it at Dean.
"Yep," Rory chirped.
"I think," Dean replied a bit nervously.
Lorelai brought her hand now in a fist up to the door to knock. Only what seemed to be 2 seconds later after the knock, Emily came to the door.
"Hello! Come in, come in!" she commanded.
The trio gathered in the foyer around Emily.
"Hi, Grandma," Rory began the introduction. "This is Dean," she gestured with her right hand towards Dean. "Hello. It's nice to meet you," Emily extended her hand out to Dean, who in turn shook it. "Hi," is all he said.
"Why don't we all go to the parlor so Richard can meet you?" Emily suggested. She led them to where Richard was sitting quietly, reading the day's Wallstreet Journal.
"Hey, Dad," Lorelai said, going over to get a drink.
"Lorelai," Richard acknowledged her without looking up.
"Richard, put the paper down. I want you to meet somebody," Emily told him.
Richard folded up the paper and placed it next to him. He stood up and examinded the boy standing next to Rory.
"Hi, Grandpa. This is Dean," Rory introduced.
"Dean is Rory's boyfriend," Emily added, explaining who exactly Dean was.
"Oh! How do you do?" Richard shook Dean's hand.
"Uh...fine. How are you?" Dean asked politely.
"Very well." Emily took a seat next to her husband, and Rory and Dean sat opposite of her, next to Lorelai.
"So Dean, where do you attend school?" Emily began her attack of questions.
"Stars Hollow High."
"You don't attend Chilton?" Richard asked, surprised.
"No."
"How old are you?" Emily asked.
"Sixteen. I'll be 17 in September."
"How long have you lived in Stars Hollow? I don't recall seeing you at Rory's birthday party."
"I moved to Stars Hollow in August."
"Where did you move from?"
"Chicago."
"Beautiful city," Richard commented.
"Yeah, it is," Dean agreed.
Lorelai and Rory were observing all of this meanwhile.
Lorelai, feeling sorry for Dean having to go through Emily's never-ending list of question, broke in. "Hey, uh, Mom, is dinner ready yet?"
Realizing that Lorelai was trying to redirect the focus of the conversation to someone or something other than Dean, Emily replied, "If dinner was ready, we would be at the table."
"But we won't know when dinner is ready unless someone asks. Otherwise, it could be ready and we wouldn't know and the food would get cold."
"Well then, why don't you go ask?"
Lorelai saw there was no easy way out, so she walked to the kitchen.
Emily watched Lorelai exit the room and picked up where she left off. "Why did you move from Chicago?"
"My parents had a job transfer and like smaller towns better," he answered.
"Oh. Do you have any siblings?"
"I have a younger sister, Clara," Dean said, glancing at Rory with a twinkle in his eye as he remembered Clara crying because Rory has scared her pretending to be a Girl Scout. Rory returned the look, blushing embarrassedly.
Lorelai reentered the room at that moment. "Dinner's ready. Mom, have you ever thought about installing an intercom or having the cook ring a bell when dinner's ready? That way-"
"Lorelai," Emily warned. "It seems that dinner is ready. Let's go to the dining room."
------
While Eating Dinner
"Could you pass the potatoes?" Lorelai requested.
"Sure," Rory said, handing them over to her.
"Mrs. Gilmore, the dinner is great!" Dean complimented.
"Thank you," Emily smiled.
"So Grandpa, anything new this week?" Rory asked.
"No. Same old business. Oh! Rory, an associate of mine just returned from Fez. He brought back some pictures that I thought you might care to take a look at later," Richard said.
"Really? I'd love to!" Rory exclaimed.
"They're in my office. After dinner we could go see them," Richard said.
"That'd be great."
"Dean, where do you want to go to college?" Emily asked.
"I haven't really thought about it yet," he replied.
"You should begin soon. College is an important step in your education, and you can never begin preparing too early," she said.
"Rory," she turned her attention to her granddaughter, "do you have anything planned this summer?"
"Not really. I'll just be hanging out with Lane and Dean and Mom. I might work a couple afternoons at the inn, too."
"Well that sounds nice. What about you Dean?"
"I don't really know yet. I might go visit Chicago, but for the most part, I'll be hanging around Stars Hollow."
"Do you have relatives in Chicago?"
"I have a cousin that I'm close to," he answered.
"Do you visit often?" she inquired.
"I used to when I lived there, but I haven't seen him this year."
"When do you think you'll leave for Chicago?"
"Probably in July," Dean guessed.
"Lorelai, you're quiet tonight," Emily noticed her daughter staring at her plate, giving Dean a break.
"There hasn't been much of a chance for me to get anything in," Lorelai said.
"Yes, but usually you find some way to get whatever you want in."
"Well, not tonight."
"How are things at the inn?"
"Fine, fine."
"Nothing has happened?"
"Well, we had a sudden hurricane warning, but with our new umbrella and boat, potential damage was prevented."
"I'm going to revert back to you Dean," Emily sighed. "What do you do in your spare time?"
And so the dinner went.
------
At the Front Door
"Dinner was great, Mom," Lorelai said as she got ready to leave.
"I'll see you next week," Emily told her.
"Grandpa, thanks for letting me see those pictures! I can't wait until we visit Fez," Rory said to her grandfather.
"I'll see if Victor has anything else he brought back from Fez," Richard responded.
"That'd be great. Thank you!" Rory hugged her grandfather with a bright smile on her face.
"Uh, it was nice meeting you both," Dean said, ready to get out of the house. The interrogation had been tiring.
"You can come to dinner anytime," Emily said.
"All right, well, we better get back home," Lorelai opened the door.
"Bye Grandma, Grandpa," Rory bid farewell to her grandparents.
------
At Dean's House In the Car
"Well, that was...interesting," Dean commented on the night.
"Sorry about my mother, but thank you for coming. Don't worry, you probably won't have to see her again for a long time," Lorelai assured him as he hopped out of the Jeep.
"I'll walk you to your door," Rory told him.
"So do you think I passed the test?" Dean asked her.
"Well, you started out failing, but you pulled your grade up to at least a B+," she said as they reached his door. "Thank you for coming though. It means a lot to me."
"You're welcome. So I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Rory agreed as Dean leaned in for a quick kiss.
He pulled away as he went inside his house.
Rory got back inside the Jeep.
"Luke's?" Lorelai asked.
"Luke's."
