PAINT SUBSTITUTES
Food coloring mixed with water or liquid starch
makes a quick substitute for water paints. Or
shave crayon bits and dissolve in turpentine -
one part crayon to 2 parts turpentine. Crayon
paints won't run together and they have a very
soft appearance that looks like oil painting and
works well on unbleached muslin or sheeting.
PAINTING STYROFOAM
Use water-soluble, rubber-base paints so the
styrofoam will not melt away
FINGER PAINT
Add 1/2 c. liquid starch to 1 quart boiling
water. Stir over heat until thick. Add 1/2 cup
liquid detergent. Stir well. Divide into small
jars. . Color with tempera or food coloring.
Keeps in refrigerator indefinitely.
HOMEMADE PAINT
Dissolve 1 cup starch in cold water. Slowly add 4
to 5 c. boiling water. Stir constantly, cook
until thick, smooth and clear. Cook 5 minutes on
low heat, watch at all times as it scorches;
Remove from heat and stir in 1 c. soap flakes.
This makes it washable and slippery. Divide
mixture Into 4 or 5 wide-mouthed jars. Add food
coloring as needed. When cold, cover jars and
store for use.
PLASTIC GLAZE
Put some lacquer thinner in a jar and add pieces
of pressed styrofoam, like the cups, egg cartons,
etc. Foam will dissolve and mixture will begin to
thicken. Just add pieces until glazes as thick
as you want it.
PRINTING INK
To make your own ink for block prints, spatter
prints, etc.
1 pint boiled linseed oil
1 pint varnish
2 pints powdered tempera
Mix to consistency of thick paste.
SPRAY PAINT
A spray bottle (such as Windex) is a good
container for doing mass painting with diluted
tempera or poster paint. Spray paint objects
inside a cardboard carton with newspaper
underneath so paint dust will be confined to
interior of box.
WHITE SNOW PAINT
Mix very fine sand, or sawdust with white acrylic
paint. This works great, and is less expensive
than the small jars of premade snow paint.
