PAINT SUBSTITUTES
Food coloring mixed with water or liquid starch makes a quick substitute for water paints. Or shave crayon bits and dissolve in turpentine - one part crayon to 2 parts turpentine. Crayon paints won't run together and they have a very soft appearance that looks like oil painting and works well on unbleached muslin or sheeting.

PAINTING STYROFOAM
Use water-soluble, rubber-base paints so the styrofoam will not melt away

FINGER PAINT
Add 1/2 c. liquid starch to 1 quart boiling water. Stir over heat until thick. Add 1/2 cup liquid detergent. Stir well. Divide into small jars. . Color with tempera or food coloring. Keeps in refrigerator indefinitely.

HOMEMADE PAINT
Dissolve 1 cup starch in cold water. Slowly add 4 to 5 c. boiling water. Stir constantly, cook until thick, smooth and clear. Cook 5 minutes on low heat, watch at all times as it scorches; Remove from heat and stir in 1 c. soap flakes. This makes it washable and slippery. Divide mixture Into 4 or 5 wide-mouthed jars. Add food coloring as needed. When cold, cover jars and store for use.

PLASTIC GLAZE
Put some lacquer thinner in a jar and add pieces of pressed styrofoam, like the cups, egg cartons, etc. Foam will dissolve and mixture will begin to thicken. Just add pieces until glazes as thick as you want it.

PRINTING INK
To make your own ink for block prints, spatter prints, etc.
1 pint boiled linseed oil
1 pint varnish
2 pints powdered tempera
Mix to consistency of thick paste.

SPRAY PAINT
A spray bottle (such as Windex) is a good container for doing mass painting with diluted tempera or poster paint. Spray paint objects inside a cardboard carton with newspaper underneath so paint dust will be confined to interior of box.

WHITE SNOW PAINT
Mix very fine sand, or sawdust with white acrylic paint. This works great, and is less expensive than the small jars of premade snow paint.
