How to get there

From May to October there are cheap charter flights from many British and German airports to Chania and Heraklion. Most flights arrive and depart from the UK on a Tuesday, but other days are also available. In the off season flights can be picked up for as little as £59 return. These flights are run by Thompsons, Airtours, Virgin and other operators and can be booked at high street travel agencies or on the internet at flightline.co.uk. At Easter one can fly to Athens and change there. Easyjet does inexpensive flights from Luton to Athens.
The nearest airport/ferryport is at Chania. Flights and ferries are available from Athens to Chania. The main airport is at Heraklion, from which coaches run to Chania every hour. From Chania to Paleochora there are 3 coaches a day, at 8:30, 12:30 and 3:30 (Allow 3 hours from Heraklion to Chania, and 2 from Chania to Paleochora).
We can pick you up from Paleochora, or arrange cheap hire cars from there for you. We can also arrange for hire cars to be collected and returned at either Chania or Heraklion airports. As the most economic way is to share taxis/hire cars from the airport, do ask us for coordinating this for you.
TIMES etc. ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE, so check with Malcolm, who will also arrange cheap car hire if you wish.

Directions by car from Chania Airport to Azogires:

From Airport follow signs to Chania (Xania), after ca. 4 kilometres fork left for Souda.

Through Souda follow signs for Rethymnon/Heraklion to bring you onto the Chania by-pass. Turn right onto the by-pass in the direction of Kasteli, heading WEST. This avoids all the traffic in Chania city.

(You may prefer to click here for a more detailed, substantial map of west Crete (203 Kb).
Please return by using the Back button on your browser.)

The by-pass now takes you all the way to the road which heads south to Kandanos and Paleohora. In August 2000 this is where the by-pass turned into a road still being built and there was no signpost at that time - you had to turn either north to Tavronitis or south to Paleochora. We presume that there will be a signpost when the by-pass  continues. Anyway, head towards Paleochora.

The road takes you ca. 60 kilometres over the mountains to Kandanos. Keep going towards Paleochora. After the hamlet of Kalamos, about 3 kilometres short of Paleohora when the sea is already in sight, turn left where Azogires and Sougia are signposted. From Tavronitis to this turning takes about 65 minutes (driving slowly perhaps 75).

5 kilometres up this road comes the village of Azogires. Our Centre is the last building on the left as you leave the village. Drive past and turn left up the unmade drive. Total journey time is 1½ to 2 hours. Enjoy the beautiful mountain road but drive carefully.

Our telephone number in Azogires is (0823) 42355 (country code Greece is 0030).

(From Heraklion Airport follow directions for Heraklion, then Chania, along the main road and then onto Chania by-pass and as above. From Heraklion Airport to Chania is 1½ to 2 hours.)
