Open water under snow a danger to snowmobilers
Snowmobile owners asked to stay home for safety

Snowmobile owners love this weather and are anxious to finally be able to ride - in November!  However, The Prince Edward Trail Riders Snowmobile Club, a local branch of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) advises eager snow beavers to wait.

"The trails have not been officially opened," says Trail Riders President Joe Lightfoot.  Like its provincial counterpart, the Trail Riders Club is warning snowmobilers to stay off the trails for safety sake; not to mention the fact the gates along the trails have not been opened, limiting access to most of the County's 200 km snow routes.

The fact is, the snow has just come too soon.  Trails have not been cleared of debris and, more importantly, the snow has hidden several areas of open water under a fluffy blanket.  At least two incidents of water-logged snow machines have been reported since the snow storm on Wednesday afternoon.

Unfortunately, Lightfoot says, the blanket of snow has insulated the open water from cold temperatures which may prevent freezing for some time.  Weather reports also predict a warm weekend, making snowmobiling conditions pretty slushy in general.
