"Homem-Gabiru: Catalogação de Uma Espécie" / (Rat-Men: The Cataloguing of a Species) was launched in September of 1991 in Recife. Myself and two friends of mine, Tarciana Portella (journalist/writer) and Zelito Passavante (teacher/plastic artist) took three and a half years to created and produce this exhibit which denounces the hunger. We pay an homage to Josué de Castro, a Brazilian social scientist, who denounced the tragic growth of world hunger in his book "Homens e Caranguejos" / Men and Crabs.
After ten years the exhibit continues to travel and has been seen by half a million people. It has also been transformed into book both in Brazil and in Germany.
This exhibit was fundamental in raising a national debate on hunger in the early nineties which continues to influence both politics and social awareness.
