Salvation
The "BTD" says "Must work energetically to attain." But scripture says it is in THE NAME OF JESUS we have salvation.
Rom 10:9 "that if you CONFESS with your mouth that JESUS IS LORD and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead YOU WILL BE SAVED.
1 John 5:13 "I write these things that you may know that you have Life everlasting, you who Believe in the Name of the SON OF GOD.
John 1:12 as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who Believe in HIS NAME"
Acts 4:12 "nor is there SALVATION in any other, for there is No OTHER NAME under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 10:43 "... through His NAME whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.
SALVATION is only possible by putting your FAITH in the NAME of JESUS CHRIST and confessing Him as LORD".
If salvation is by works, then the above scriptures are false. More correctly spoken, GOOD WORKS follow those who are truly "born again.
1 John 3:9 'whoever has been BORN 0F God does not sin for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin because he has been BORN OF GOD.
The indwelling Holy Spirit that lives in the "born again believer gives him power to turn from sin.
Eph. 2:8-10 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest anyone should boast.
GOOD WORKS CANNOT EARN SALVATION!
Rom 3:20 ..by the deeds of the law NO flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin"
Rom. 3:28 "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by FAITH apart from the deeds of the law.
Rom. 4:4-5 "Now to him who WORKS, the wages are not counted as GRACE but as DEBT. But to him who DOES NOT WORK but BELIEVES on Him who justifies the ungodly, his FAITH, IS ACCOUNTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS"
In verses 1-3 we find that Abraham was NOT justified by WORKS, but rather .. Abraham BELIEVED God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
THE LAW
Why did God give us "the law"?
Gal. 3:22-26 "The Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by FAITH in JESUS CHRIST might be given to those who believe. But before FAITH came we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the FAITH which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor TO BRING US TO CHRIST that we might be justified by FAITH. But after FAITH has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are ALL SONS OF GOD THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS."
Gal 2:16 "...a man is not justified by the works of the law but by FAITH in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by FAITH in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law NO flesh shall be justified."
When James said "Faith without works is dead (James 2:20,26) he is not talking about works to earn your salvation, but rather, if you have Faith, then you will act upon it.
If someone jumped onto the bus and shouted "there is a bomb about to blow up this bus" and I told him "I believe" but yet I did not move to get out of the bus, my faith is dead. I said I believed him, but I did not truly believe him. If I believed I would have run for my life.
And James explains this with Abraham.. James 2:22 Do you see that FAITH was working together with his works and by works Faith WAS MADE PERFECT."
In verse 21-23 he tells us that when God asked him to offer his son as a sacrifice he "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
In verse 18 James says "...I will show you my FAITH by my works"
In other words, My Good Works are PROOF, or the result, that I have Faith.
SUMMARY: Good works are a RESULT of salvation, not a CONDITION for salvation.
John 5:13 " These things I have written to you who believe in the NAME of the Son of God, that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.
