Cross
JW's are taught to become enemies of the cross. They are offended by the cross! So are Muslims, Mormons, Satanists, Witches and many other cults and occultists. JW's are taught that Jesus was nailed to a pole.
They also teach that Jesus was NOT raised in the FLESH, but that He was raised as a Spirit being. This is an intent to build a doctrine that supports an invisible return of Christ in 1914 to rule over the governmental agency called, the Watchtower Organization! This doctrine overrides the scriptures that say Jesus will be seen by every human being when He returns.
Matt. 24:30 (& Rev. 1:7) says that when Jesus returns to earth "-- all the tribes of the earth...will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds...”
Explination
The cross is a symbol of VICTORY, not defeat! It is NOT a symbol of the weapon by which our savior was defeated, but rather a symbol of the weapon by which our savior defeated the enemy of our soul!
Ephes. 2:16
And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
But only those who are in Christ Jesus can receive this victory!
1 John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God (born again) overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Why does the cross offend the Watchtower? Very simply put, the cross is a reminder of the victory by which Jesus suffered in his flesh in order to defeat the Devil. Everyone who displays this symbol, is reminding the devil of the victory by which Jesus conquered the powers of darkness. And the devil HATES it!
Col. 2:14-15
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; [15] And having spoiled principalities and powers (Spirits of darkness), he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it (the cross).
This symbol is an offense to those who refuse to bow their knee to Jesus, even as Satan refuses to bow HIS knee to the Lord Jesus Christ and worship him!
Philip. 2:10
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
So the Watchtower, as rebels against God, refuse to bow the knee to Jesus, and thereby siding with the powers of darkness, they are repulsed by the symbol by which Satan was defeated 2000 years ago!
Furthermore, this symbol represents the fact that those of us whom have surrendered our hearts to Jesus, have crucified ourselves with Christ and have received the Holy Spirit as a deposit guarantee of our inheritance in the Kingdom of God.
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Galatians 5:24
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Galatians 6:14
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
So then, the cross is an offense to those who are enemies of God. They refuse to meet God at the cross where he paid a price for us and refuse to join with Him at the cross where we are to die to our selfish, worldly lusts and choose to live for HIM.
Philip. 3:18
(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Definition
The Gr. word for CROSS is "Stauros” and means a "pole or cross”
Strong's Concordance defines the word as: stauros, stow-ros'; from the base of Greek 2476 (histemi); a stake or post (as set upright), i.e. (special) a pole or cross (as an instrument of capital punishment); figurative exposure to death, i.e. self-denial; by implication the atonement of Christ :- cross.
By definition, it can be either one! So the cross cannot be excluded by its definition.
Nelson's Bible Dictionary says that Alexander the Great used the cross for crucifixion 300 years before Jesus Christ. This was a form of punishment prior to the days of Jesus Christ.
The word for TREE (Acts 5:30 & Gal. 3:13) is the Gr. word "Xulon” and it means "timber, wooden article, tree". This word does not have anything to do with the form of structure of the article, but rather the material of its construction. Jesus was nailed to wood! Crosses are made of wood!
NOTE: The Watchtower Society claims in the Kingdom Interlinear, pages 1155 and 1156, that Jesus died on a torture stake not a cross. To support their case, they cite a reference to Decruce Liber Primus by the 16th century author, Justus Lipsius. Included with this reference is a copy of an etching from page 647 of De Cruce Liber Primus in which the torture stake is detailed with a victim suffering on it. But, at another point in the same work, Justus himself states explicitly that such a device was not used in the torture death of Jesus: on page 650, Lipsius pictures Jesus on a conventional 4 piece cross (vertical stake, foot board, cross bar, and sign). As evidence for his conclusion about the cross he cites various early church fathers who were aware of the Roman practices in Jerusalem during the era in which Christ died.
In Sect B the "BTD" says "Displaying Jesus' stake a reproach" and then reference Heb. 6:6 and Matt. 27:41,42. Neither scripture says anything of the sort. Heb. 6:4-6 is talking about those whom have fallen from the FAITH.
They first reference Hebrews 6:4-6
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Jesus Christ died on the cross to make payment for our sins and redeem us unto Himself. This scripture is saying, for a believer to renounce Jesus Christ and “fall away” from the faith (apostatize), Jesus would have to come again and “REPURCHASE” this person from Satan by dying on the cross “AGAIN!” Since this will never happen, the apostate Christian cannot be saved "again"!
It is amazing to me how the Watchtower has turned this scripture into an understanding that “Displaying the cross is a reproach!”
The "BTD" even references this same scripture in 38. SALVATION Sect. C" saying "Repentance impossible for some" and then references Heb. 6:4-6 which is the “proper” interpretation of this scripture.
They also quote Matthew 27:41-42
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, [42] He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
What this scripture has to do with displaying the cross, certainly passes over my head! If you will read it, it says nothing of the sort, but rather that they mocked Jesus as he hung on the cross!
'The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the POWER of God.” 1 Cor. 1:18
Why do YOU suppose the message of the cross is foolishness to the Watchtower?! For those of us who are being saved, the message of the cross has power!
In Sect. B the "BTD" says "Jesus a spirit, not still on stake." Ref. 1 Tim.3:16 and 1 Peter 3:18. These are two different statements. The second part “not still on stake (cross)" is true. The first part "Jesus a spirit" is a half truth. A “half truth” is actually, a lie!
In Luke 24:39-43 Jesus, after rising from the dead, said "see my hands and my feet, that it is myself; feel me and see, because a spirit does not have FLESH and BONES as you behold I have.”
Then He eats food in front of them in verse 43.
Jesus clearly declared that, after he rose from the dead, he had been resurrected in a FLESH and BONES body! Jesus made it a point of SHOWING them that he WAS NOT a SPIRIT, as the Watchtower declares!
Yet, if you will notice in verse 31, Jesus is able to disappear even though he is in a FLESH AND BONES body (see also John 20:19,25-29 Jesus walks through closed doors in this body of flesh and bones) In Acts 1:11 Jesus ascends to heaven (still in the flesh) and the angels say He "will return in like manner...”
Does this prove that Jesus was NOT in a Flesh and Bones body? Or was his ability to pass through closed doors simply a miracle even as both Jesus and Peter walked on water in a human body, which we know is impossible in the natural! How about Elijah, who was taken into heaven in a chariot of fire, while still in his physical Fleshly body? Why does it seem to be impossible for the Watchtower to understand that God can make a physical (fleshly) body pass through closed doors!
There is NO scripture saying that Jesus left His Flesh and Bones body on earth and went to heaven in the SPIRIT.
But, I will go on to explain, the spirit of Christ indwells inside of the believer by the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit IS the Spirit of God, and the Spirit of Christ!
Romans 8:9-10
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. [10] And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
The first scripture they reference is 1 Peter 3:18
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
The word for “quickened” actually means, “to make alive.”
zoopoieo, dzo-op-oy-eh'-o; from the same as Greek 2226 (zoon) and Greek 4160 (poieo); to (re-) vitalize (literal or figurative) :- make alive, give life, quicken.
Whereas the Watchtower seems to imply that this verse is saying that Jesus was raised “AS” a Spirit being, they have failed to notice that it actually says that Jesus was raised “BY” the Spirit “but quickened by the Spirit” The correct interpretation is that the Spirit of God raised the “physical” body of Christ from the dead by giving it life! It does NOT say that Jesus was raised a Spirit being!
The other scripture they point to is 1 Tim 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
This verse says NOTHING about the type of body Jesus was raised in! It simply says that Jesus was “declared righteous” in the Spirit! To imply that this scripture is saying that Jesus was “raised as a Spirit being” is a total mutilation this verse!
Justified in the spirit (edikaio¯the¯ en pneumati). First aorist passive indicative of dikaioo¯, to declare righteous, to vindicate. (Robertson's Word Pictures)
And as the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary explains
justified--that is, approved to be righteous [ALFORD]. Christ, while "in the flesh," seemed to be just such a one as men in the flesh, and in fact bore their sins; but by having died to sin, and having risen again, He gained for Himself and His people justifying righteousness (Isa_50:8; Joh_16:10; Act_22:14; Rom_4:25; Rom_6:7, Rom_6:10; Heb_9:28; 1Pe_3:18; 1Pe_4:1 1Jo_2:1) [BENGEL]; or rather, as the antithesis to "was manifest in the flesh" requires, He was justified in the Spirit at the same time that He was manifest in the flesh, that is, He was vindicated as divine "in His Spirit," that is, in His higher nature; in contrast to "in the flesh," His visible human nature. (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary)
In Matt. 3:15-17 you will see the Spirit approving of the righteousness of Christ when the Spirit of God descended and alighted upon him and then God spoke (the Spirit declaring His righteousness “justified in the Spirit”) and said 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” Jesus was in THE FLESH when this took place.
Matt. 24:30 (& Rev. 1:7) says that when Jesus returns to earth "-- all the tribes of the earth...will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds...” (See 36. "RETURN OF CHRIST)
There is NO secret return of Christ such as the 1914 “spiritual” return of Christ taught by the Watchtower.
Here is the explanation for their false doctrine that Jesus was raised in the spirit and not the flesh!
The Watchtower failed to truthfully predict the coming of Jesus Christ in 1914. Since their prophecy proofed false, they had to cover up the error and did so by declaring that Jesus was not raised in the flesh, therefore, he will not be coming in the flesh by which “every eye” would see him. This way, they could convince their flock of followers, that Jesus has already come secretly, in an invisible, spirit body, and is establishing his “government” through the Watchtower! In truth, not a single Watchtower person has EVER met Jesus Christ.
But God, knowing the deceitful hearts of man, prepared us for this error in 2 John verse7. Here is a study on the scripture in 2 John verse 7, which defines those who are “deceivers and antichrist”!
For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 2 John 1:7
