Bernie Ward’s Green and White Army….Bernie Ward’s Green and White Army…’.they were singing in the pubs and clubs of Dublin as the wee man’s new look Coveside United team started their campaign with a comfortable 1-0 win against the Caribbean All-Stars at Myrtle Park yesterday.

There were several new faces in the Coveside line up (a big welcome to Andy and Paul) while several of the easier targets for this rookie report writer were missing ( come back Ian and Gino all is forgiven). However, the real change was the gaudy new shirts manager Ward had the boys decked ( or should that bedeck-Chaired?) out in . In fact, before the game, the Coveside team was introduced to an Umbro sales representative who wished to personally thank us for taking the shirts off their hands.

On to the game itself where the Coveside brain trust (that ‘s Robbie and Bernie for any of you who were wondering) decided on a new 4-3-3 formation that gave Coveside an attacking look as the game started. Clever midfield play from Karim and Doc, typically quick stuff up front from Craig Larson and Rob Paul and some direct attacks from Brad Chapman had the All-Stars on the backfoot. At the other end a long shot and breakaway caused a couple of scares for the defence where Sean Bartlett was deputizing for regular keeper Paul Chapman who, rumor has it, is set to join Liverpool in their vain attempt to keep a clean sheet.

After some 20 minutes the breakthrough finally arrived when a long ball into the box fell to Brad Chapman whose semi scuffed shot beat the All-Stars keeper. With confidence rising the chances started to come highlighted by a fine rip from Karim that hit the underside of the bar but somehow managed to stay out. A few minutes later  Rob Paul cutting in from the left tried a cheeky little near post number, but again only managed to rattle the post.

Boosted by Rob Paul’s half time observation that “Our fitness is shit but theirs is even worse” Coveside swept forward, with chances came thick and fast. Lovely strikes from Randy, Rob, Andy and Jason Fischer all went close but somehow stayed out and a couple of breakaways for Craig Larson were thwarted by the All-Stars keeper. At the back Cap’n Al Roberts and Russ Hennessey got to grips with the two CAS target men, with Russ even having time for a tremendous Tony Adams impersonation. His offside appeal carried no weight with everyone’s favourite cockney ref, Ron ‘ Not on my Manor ‘ Ward.

Coveside continued to dominate with Doc and Randy particularly effective, but the second goal wouldn’t come and when Karim managed to put a header wide from a couple of yards out, Coveside figured that 1-0 would have to do and thoughts turned to the fully stacked cooler.

Not the prettiest win but we’re already two points better off than last year.

Man of the Match: Mark Docherty : great passing , lots of running and he even won a few headers!

Moment of the Match: Craig Larson, trying to flick the ball over his head but only managing to hit himself in the melon and then trying to pretend it never happened. Quality.

Quote of the Match: ‘ They look shite, you shoulda got Liverpool shirts’ – Mr. Ward Senior.
