An Exhibition of Conservative Paranoia

Exhibit 59: Mr. Washington, Meet Mr. Godwin

For a guy who insists he's not likening President Obama to Nazis, WorldNetDaily's Ellis Washington sure loves to liken Obama to Nazis.

Ellis Washington

When someone insists they're not likening someone to Nazis, they're probably likening someone to Nazis.

Ellis Washington pretty much lives out that trope. The WorldNetDaily columnist has engaged in increasingly outlandish insults of President Obama -- fascists, pagan gods and the like -- but likening him to Hitler and other Nazis is a old standby for him.

While Washington is prone to numerous crimes against logic, from being flamboyantly wrong to pretending to be Socrates -- but he's utterly dishonest about his Godwinism.

He's been doing this for years. In a May 2008 column, Washington wrote:

How else could any political figure attract over 75,000 people standing for hours in the hot sun of Oregon just for a glimpse of this false political messiah named Barack Obama? An utterly vacuous man who just the other day said these sinister words that would make Goebbels blush with envy as the multitudes of "useful idiots" hung on his every word, saluting him with multiple ovations.

Washington struck again in a July 2008 column, praising a college-bound student who wrote "Just because Obama can write up and deliver a speech better than others does not mean he is the best candidate. If I remember correctly, Adolf Hitler and Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick convinced mass numbers of people that they were respectable through dialogue."

Ellis Washington joins WorldNetDaily's resurgence in likening Obama to Hitler in a June 2011 column:

Borrowing a page from Hitler's playbook, Barack Obama, in a speech delivered in Colorado Springs on July 2, 2008, called for his own personal police force:

We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded [as America's combined military forces].

Few Americans realize that truly Obama fulfilled that campaign promise and today has legions of paid bureaucrats ("Brownshirts") sworn to his allegiance just like Hitler's Brownshirts and Gestapo of the 1920s and '30s.

Not only is Washington's attack sleazy, it's also completely false. Obama was talking about increasing the size of the Peace Corps and the foreign service, not creating "his own personal police force."

Washington can't leave the lie alone, however; he has to embellish it by claiming that all government workers are "brownshirts" who are "sworn to his allegiance." He offers no evidence of this, of course -- there isn't any. How about producing a copy of that nonexistent oath of allegiance, Ellis?

Washington compared Obama to Hitler again in a November 2011 column, while adding the new tactic of denying he was doing exactly that:

Desperate people do desperate things. What would you do for your daily bread? How low would you go for gainful employment? What religious, ethical or constitutional principles would you disregard to allow the government under a demagogue leader, a cowardly Congress and corrupt courts to enact policies and laws that in effect steal money from one group of people (the so-called "rich") and give the stolen trillions of dollars to others who didn't earn it and don't deserve it (the so-called "poor") all in the name of the grand, failed Marxist polices repackaged as redistribution of wealth, "fair share" and social justice?

The Weimar Republic (1919-33) and the German people made that fateful decision on Jan. 30, 1933, when they elected the genocidal megalomaniac Adolf Hitler and a few months later gave him dictatorial powers. Will America make that same fateful decision on Nov. 4, 2012, by re-electing President Barack Obama? While I am not equating Obama to Hitler, I am making the legitimate philosophical distinction that liberal fascism (e.g., progressivism) – a worldview by which both leaders governed, under the Democratic Socialist Party and National Socialist Party, respectively – has by design driven society into global, political anarchy and economic catastrophe, which continues to this day.

Can President Obama force 300 million free American citizens into a concentration camp euphemistically called government-controlled health care under the "Individual Mandate" by 2014 or face severe tax penalties? If so, then are we truly still free citizens endowed by God with unalienable rights under natural law, or are we in essence de facto, voluntary slaves to an ever-evolving, ever-expanding leviathan State called the federal government under positive law?

Desperate people do desperate things indeed.

Washington did it again, denial and all, in a February 2012 column:

President Obama’s fascist tactics reminds me of an earlier, radical age 80 years ago and the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. No, I’m not saying Obama is Hitler; however, writer Eric Metaxas, a biographer of Christian martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in chapter 12 of his revelatory new book on Bonhoeffer, wrote these prophetic words describing the demonic and consensus Zeitgeist that dominated Germany in the early 1930s[.]

Of course, If you have to explain that you're not likening Obama to Hitler, you're likening Obama to Hitler.

Apparently unable to stop for any reasonable length of time,Washington played the same game in his Oct. 4 column, likening Obama to Hitler while denying he was doing any such thing:

One aspect of Hitler’s socialist universal health-care model was “racial hygiene,” the removal of certain “undesirable” segments of society who are judged beneath the Aryan ideal, thus “life unworthy of existence,” as Hitler would repeatedly say. Using his brutal panzer divisions, Hitler literally rolled out his universal health care throughout occupied France, Belgium and the Netherlands – those nations with mainly “Aryan” populations. Hitler used his military thugs of the Gestapo and SS Stormtroopers to implement universal health care in those very countries that he desired to Aryanize and perfect by sanitizing the populations through sterilization and medical murder of all persons unfortunate to have physical or mental defects.

Of course, I do not contend that Obama is Hitler, but if America foolishly adopt policies of national socialism, then we fail to learn from history the innumerable grotesqueries, inhumanity and genocide of previous nations who tried universal health care. To grant governments this god-like power over birth, life and death issues will be misused, not exactly as it was in Nazi Germany, nevertheless a tragedy for society.
Pro tip: If you've written a column titled "Hitlercare vs. Obamacare," if you've included a Hitler-Obama image (left) with your column, and if you've stated that "Obama is using his Gestapo and SS Stormtroppers [sic] or so-called 'navigators' (e.g., the youth, the unions, Planned Parenthood, NAACP, ACORN, La Raza, etc.) to propagandize the poor, the miseducated and minorities who are being exploited to lead this final blitzkrieg toward forcing universal health care," you are, in fact, contending that Obama is Hitler.

Washington finally dropped the pretense in his Oct. 25 column making a straight-up Obama-Nazi comparison without pretending he wasn't:

Historically, there are noted similarities between National Socialism and Democratic Socialism – both movements are totalitarian revolutions led by a charismatic, god-like messiah who places himself beyond correction or the rule of law; both use the power of the Leviathan State to amass unconstitutional powers unto themselves – for example, the Nazis burned down the Reichstag (Parliament), blamed it on the communists and used this power vacuum to eventually combine Hitler’s chancellorship with the presidency, leading directly to new tyrannical powers Hitler used to launch World War II and establish the Gestapo, the SS, concentration camps and the Holocaust. Also during World War II, the American left under FDR used dozens of “internment camps” to imprison hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Japanese, Italian and German American citizens without due process.

Today President Obama freely and arrogantly uses the vast machinery of government – NSA, IRS, EPA, Homeland Security, the Justice Department and HHS – for example, to force Obamacare to deconstruct the greatest health-care program in the world, to spy on us and to punish his enemies both foreign and domestic. Both socialist philosophies hate (practicing) Jews, Christians, Catholics, conservatives, tea-party members, capitalism, the church, the Bible and a free media. Progressives love to crush all dissenting voices, to systematically deconstruct societal morality by any means necessary.

Washington serves up another doozy of Godwinism in his Nov. 1 column:

The caption in the image above was perhaps written around 1943 and says that, “Ten years ago the Nazis burned these books … but in America we can still read them.” Although this statement tried to distinguish America from Nazi Germany, it is only partially true today. Why? Because while in a de jure (legal) sense America today doesn’t burn books, in a de facto (unofficial) sense through our book publishing industry, our literary agent industry, our media, our education system, our politics, our legal system and throughout culture and society, their exists an existential book burning, happening on a much greater scale by the Democrat Socialist Party, a scale the Nationalist Socialist Party could only dream of 80 years ago under Hitler and the Nazis. In modern times today, leftists creates this book burning atmosphere by deconstructing, perverting and destroying conservative ideas, particularly those out of the Judeo-Christian tradition of intellectual thought ... without lighting one match or igniting one torch. Hitler would be pleased!

Only in such an anti-God, anti-intellectual society as America has devolved into during the Age of Progressivism (1860–present) and in the Age of Obama (2009–present) are Heine’s prophetic words tantamount to those of Moses, Isaiah and St. Paul when he wrote, “Where books (ideas) are burned, they will, in the end burn people, too.”
Yes, Washington really is claiming that progressives burn more books than the Nazis if imaginary ones are counted in the total. And, apparently, criticizing a conservative idea is exactly the same thing as setting it on fire.

Somehow, we doubt that Washington feels the same way about conservative criticism of progressive ideas; otherwise, that would make him a walking pile of oily rags and a box of matches.

We can also presume that Washington including "our book publishing industry, our literary agent industry" in his book-burning rant is probably about Washington's inability to get his works published. This overlooks the fact that the not-left-leaning website that publishes his column operates a book division.

What does it say that even WND apparently considers Washington unworthy of having his work published in book form? Probably that WND actually has some standards after all.
