Secret of Mura Ryo part I
We rode through the night with great speed. The Daidoji had set up periodic check points where we switched exhausted horses for new ones, and at dawn we passed through Heigan Ryo Kokoro and up the steep climb to Mura Ryo. When I arrived I saw banners of all the great clans. Immediately I went to the Crab emissary and introduced myself. His name was Yasuki Gen. I had heard of him before, and I must say that his reputation was shady at best. The ambassadors where Kitsuki Yama, Ide Xien Po, and Asako Go. I informed Yasuki Gen of the emissary of the Crane, Kakita Kanai. I told him I knew nothing about her, since I did not really talk to her, and had no interest in her political ramblings. I was about to leave when Gen pulled me aside. "I advise you to stay for a while." "I am no politician Yasuki, I seek battles." "You will find them here, the Dragon have a secret here, we all know it... I can not say much about this right now, but a Dragon army is nearby, and all of the clans are sending armies to take this village." "What is that which is so important about this place?" I asked, but he just stared at me... "I can not say, but war is here Maatan san, look over there..." A dragon outrider raced up, dismounted and raced into where the Dragon ambassador was staying. "I may not be a warrior Maatan san, but I know what a prelude to war look like. If you seek battle, ride south..."

Isawa Uona's Hurricane initiates open fire on the Dragonscales. 4 hits are scored for 11 damage. One Dragonscale is killed. The Hurricane initiates fire at the Dragon medium elite hitting 3 times for 14 damage. One more dragon dies. Isawa Tsuke casts fury of Osano Wo on the Dragon Talons, scoring 2 hits for 14 damage. One Wound is taken by the Dragon Talons.
I rode to the south to see an army of the Phoenix approach the Dragons. I quickly found a hill and identified troops by their banners. As I reached the top, the phoenix began to let loose their arrows, already inflicting casualties among the Dragon.

Isawa Uona's Hurricane initiates fire at the Dragonscales hitting 2 times for 10 damage. 1 Dragon dies. Hurricane initiates fire at the Dragon medium elite, hitting once for 3 damage. No casualties.
I believe the Dragon Clan was somewhat surprised at the arrival at the Phoenix, as their movement was erratic. The Phoenix still peppered the Dragon with arrows, slowly whittling away the forces of the Dragon.
Turn Three of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 15 Dragon has the hand of fate Dragon Honour: 8 Ranged attacks: Dragons Flame fires arrows at Isawa Uona's Hurricane Initiates. Uona casts gust of wind, negating the attack, and becomes spent. Uona's Hurricane initiates fire at the dragon flame hitting 2 times for 8 damage. No casualties. Hurricane initiates fire a volley at the Dragon medium elite. 4 hits are scored for 28 damage. 2 Dragon Casualties. Isawa Tsuke casts fury of Osano Wo on the Dragon Medium elite, hitting 5 times for 67 damage. 6 Casualties The Dragons slowly advanced as arrows rained down on them, and from a clear sky a bolt of lightning struck down in the center of the Dragon medium elite, followed by an unbelievable thunder clap, causing me to winch. When I looked back over, the charred husks of 6 Dragon Bushi lie on the ground....
Turn Four of Fourteen Phoenix honour: 17 Dragon have hand of fate Dragon Honour: 8
Shiba Katsuda spends 1 Void to make his Iajutsu go up to 5. Bad Kharma is played causing Katsuda to pay 2 Void. Ranged Attacks: Dragon Flame fire at Isawa Uona's Hurricane initiates, and hit 1 time for 7 damage. No casualties. Uona's Archers counterfire, hitting 3 times for 10 damage. Killing 1 Dragon Flame. Hurricane Initiates fire at Dragonscales, hitting 2 times for 11 damage. 1 Dragonscale dies. Isawa Tsuke casts Fury of Osano Wo on the Dragon medium elite. Hitting 3 times for 25 damage. 2 Medium elite die. The Dragon medium elite break. More bolts of lightning flicker from the cloud thickening sky, searing 2 more Dragons. Their will falters, and they begin to fall back from the magical onslaught. The Tsunami legion close by, whips around the side of the wood line, facing off against the Dragon Talons. On the other side of the field, the Dragons move into an area of entrapping terrain...
Turn Five of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 17 Dragon have hand of fate Dragon Honour: 8
Shiba Katsuda spends 1 Void to make his Iajutsu 5. Primary Movement: The Dragon Talons play the tactical card "charge" but Isawa Norikazu spends 1 Void to force the Dragon Player to put that card back in his hand. The Dragon Talons do however manage to engage. Ranged Attacks: The Dragonflame fire a volley at Isawa Uona's archers, but she casts gust of wind and becomes spent. Uona's archers counterfire, hitting 3 times for 19 damage. Killing 1 Dragonflame. HtH Combat: The Tsunami Legion play the card "Defensive poisition" and Shiba Katsuda challenges Mirumoto To an Iajutsu duel. Shiba Katsuda Kills Mirumoto Taki. The Dragonscale hit the Tsunami Legion 2 times for 6 damage. No casualties. The Tsunami legion in turn hit 3 times for 29 damage. Killing one of the Dragon Talons. The Dragon Talons engage the wall of Yari. Shiba Katsuda waves his sword in the air and challenges Mirumoto Taki to a Iajutsu duel. Taki accepts and is cut down by the capable hands of the Phoenix.
Turn Six of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 21 Phoenix have hand of fate Dragon Honour: 8
Dragonscales play the charge card and engage the Water Elementals.
Ranged Attacks: Dragonflame fire at Isawa Uona's archers hitting 4 times for 14 damage. 1 Archer dies. Isawa Uona's archers fire at the Mirumoto house guard, hitting 2 times for 8 damage. No casualties.
Dragon Talons hit the Tsunami Legion 5 times for 34 damage. Killing 3 Legionnaires. The Tsunami Legion strike back hitting for 29 damage. Killing 1 Dragon Talon. The Dragonscales fail to hit the Water Elementals at all, and the Water Elementals likewise fail to hit.
The Dragonscale Charge into the Phoenix Water Elementals, but between the Dragon Daisho Technique, and the Water Elementals strange maneuvers, there was really no damage caused to either side. The Dragon Talons on the other hand slowly begin to widdle away at the Phoenix Tsunami Legion.
Turn Seven of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 22 Dragon have the Hand of fate Dragon Honour: 8 Special Orders: Shiba Katsuda spends 1 Void to give himself defense of 5. Ranged Attacks: The Dragonflame fire at the Void Guard, Isawa Uona casts gust of wind and becomes spent, the ranged attack is negated. HtH Combat: Dragon Talons hit for 5 times for 45 damage, killing 4 of the Tsunami Legion. The Tsunami Legion hit 2 times for 20 damage, killing 1 Dragon.
Turn Eight of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 22 Phoenix have hand of fate Dragon Honour: 9
Dragon Medium Elites quit the field. Ranged attacks: Dragonflame fire at the Void guard. Turtle shell is played by them. 3 hits for 17 damage. One Void guard dies. Isawa Uona's archers fire at the Dragonflame, hitting 3 times for 15 damage, killing 1 archer. HtH Combat: The Dragons Talons hit the Tsunami Legion 5 times for 58 damage, killing 5 Phoenix. The Tsunami Legion hit 3 times for 24 damage, killing one Dragon. The Dragonscales hit 7 times for 37 damage, killing 3 Water Elementals. The Water elementals score no hits. On both flanks it seemed that the Dragons engaged where easily gaining ground to the Phoenix. The Phoenix archers however where inflicting horrendous casualties to the Dragon. Isawa Norikazu spends 2 Void to give the Void guard +1 strike and +1 TN. Cavalry Movement: The Tsunami legion attempt to break away, but is contested by the Dragon. The Tsunami legion fails to break away. Ranged Attacks: Uona's Hurricane Initiates fire at the Dragons flame. The Dragon Flame play turtle shell. 3 hits are scored for 9 damage. No casualties. The Dragonflame hit 2 times for 3 damage. No casualties.
HtH Combat: The Tsunami Legion hit the Dragon Talons 2 times for 9 damage. No casualties. The Dragon Talons reply hitting 3 times for 28 damage killing 2 Legionnaires. The Dragonscales hit 5 times for 29 damage killing 2 water elementals. The water elementals hit 3 times for 17 damage. Killing 1 dragonscale. The Tsunami Legion quickly attempts to break off their engagement with the Dragon Talons, but the Dragons press foward, vengefully hacking away at their opponents. The Tsunami Legion fail their morale test and Rout. Ranged attacks: Isawa Tsuke casts fury of Osano Wo at the Dragonflame. Resist magic is played and the spell has no effect. Uona's Archers fire at the Dragonflame hitting 3 times for 18 damage. Killing 1 Dragon. Hurricane initiates fire at Dragonflame. The Dragonflame play turtle shell. No hits are scored. HtH Combat: The Dragon Talons hit 3 times for 14 damage, killing the last Tsunami Legionairre. The Tsunami legion hit once for 8 damage. No casualties. The Dragonscales hit the water elementals 3 times for 26 damage, killing 2 Phoenix. The Water elementals hit 4 times for for 36 damage, killing 3 of the dragon scales. Both the Dragonscales and the Water Elementals become broken. The Void guard hit the Mirumoto house guard 4 times for 27 damage, killing one house guard. The houseguard hit 2 times for 16 damage, killing 1 void guard. The continued melee between the Dragonscale and the Water elementals continues on, no side decisively giving ground, the same going for the Mirumoto house guard against the Void Guard. The Dragon Talons slaughter the Tsunami legion to the man, and Shiba Katsuda turns his back and begins to run...
Turn Eleven of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 23 Dragon has the Hand of Fate Dragon Honour: 12 Special orders: The tactical card "burning your essence" is played on Isawa Norikazu. He takes 2 wounds to spend 2 extra void to give the Void guard +1 Strike +1 TN. Primary Movement:

Katsuda routs and is killed. Ranged Attacks: Isawa Uona's Hurricane initiates fire at the Dragonflame and hit 2 times for 10 damage, killing 1 Dragon. The hurricane initiates fire at the Dragonflame, hitting 5 times for 40 damage, killing 4 Dragonflames. The Dragonflame become broken. HtH Combat: Void Guard hit the Mirumoto House guard 3 times for 16 damage, wounding 1 House Guard. The House guard hit 3 times for 19 damage, killing 1 Void Guard. The Water Elementals and Dragonscale break away from each other as the Mirumoto house guard and Void Guard. Norikazu is visibly strained in his command role. I can not imagine what is going through that lunatics mind. The Dragonflame meet a worse fate, as arrows rain down on them from seemingly every direction, as most of them die horribly.
Turn Twelve of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 24 Phoenix have the Hand of fate Dragon Honour: 17 Special Orders:

Uona casts windbourne speed on Isawa Tsuke and his Yojimbo. Primary Movement: Water Elementals Rout. Ranged attacks: Isawa Tsuke casts fury of Osano Wo on the Dragonflame. Resist magic is played. HtH combat: The Mirumoto House guard hit the void guard 2 times for 8 damage. No casualties. The Void Guard hit 6 times for 44 damage, killing 2 Mirumoto and wounding 1. Endphase: The Dragonscale rally. The Water Elementals break formation and begin to rout the field, and the Dragonscale, to their credit, halt and reform their lines. On the other hand, the Void guard begin to swamp the Mirumoto House Guard.
Turn Thirteen out of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 24 Dragon have the hand of fate Dragon Honour: 18
Isawa Uona casts windbourne speed on Isawa Tsuke and his Yojimbo. Primary Movement: The Water elementals quit the field. Ranged attacks: Isawa Tsuke casts fury of Osano Wo on the Dragonflame. Beyond your mastery is played by the Dragon. 4 hits are scored for 37 damage. 3 Dragonflame are vaporized. Isawa Uona's Hurricane initiates fire at the dragonflame, hitting 4 times for 27 damage. 2 Dragons die. HtH Combat: The Mirumoto House guard hit the Void guard 2 times for 9 damage. The Void guard hit 3 times for 20 damage. Killing 1 Mirumoto and wounding another. Another bolt of lightning flashed into the dragonflame, vaporizing 3, as arrows fly into them. The Mirumoto house guard slowly lose footing against the Void guard. The Water Elementals completely leave the field, as I prepare to do the same. Turn Fourteen out of Fourteen Phoenix Honour: 25 The Phoenix have the Hand of fate Dragon Honour: 18 Special Orders: Isawa Uona casts windbourne speed on the Hurricane initiates. Ranged Attacks: Isawa Uona's Archers fire at the Dragonscale, hitting 3 times for 8 damage. No casualties. HtH Combat: The Mirumoto house guard hit the Void guard 4 times for 45 damage, killing 4 of the Phoenix. The Void guard counter by hitting 2 times for 14 damage, killing 1 Dragon. Phoenix Victory Points: 6 END GAME Dragon Victory Points: 5 The battle was close, but in the end the Phoenix triumphed... But right now as it stand, I do not think they can take the Village as they are. The sun is about to set. I think that I will go back to the town and pump the Yasuki ambassador for more information. After all, why would a pacifistic clan like the Phoenix, mount an offensive siege?
AAR 04APR99 1400 - 2000 This was the first time we have used the rules in the Phoenix boxed set, and boy am I impressed with their abilities! His opponent was a newcomer to the game and was playing an army straight out of the basic set, and this goes to prove a point. An army only out of the basic set can still go toe to toe with something out of the expansion sets. Of course as a beginner, the Dragon player made plenty of fatal mistakes. This is also my first attempt to create a storyline built from these battles, to test my mettle as an author... So everyone dont laugh too hard. Unfortunately this may be my last report in a while, but I will keep trying to update as much as possible. But I also want some practical experience, and I cant get that from doing reports... That is my humble opinion.

I was summoned to Hoturi's
presence the night after his victory against the Phoenix. My Monk companion had
disappeared around dusk, I must admit I was disappointed, I was getting used to him.
As I entered Hoturi's tent, Hoturi sat there by candle light, a scroll lay before him and
a frustrated appearance lay upon his face. "You are no longer welcome here
Maatan san, but before you leave I ask one last favour." "You have but to
name it Hoturi sama." "Please escort my ambassador to the village of Mura
Ryo, on the edge of the Dragon lands." I must admit, escorting a Courtier was a
bit of an insult and waste of my talents, but I felt I owed Hoturi. "Hai Hoturi
sama." "You must go quickly, there is no time to waste, she is waiting
for you now. Her name is Kakita Kanai."
