Chris在寫真集內記下他對意大利的感覺:
There are times when even a singular man has to break away from the normality of his life. There are times when he needs to follow his heart, fulfill his desires and live his dreams; when he must escape from his corporeal truth, lose himself in sweet reverie, transcend his own spirit and fly to the crepuscular edges of reasonableness, where imagination blends into reality and reality into his heart.
It was dawn. The sun was revealing its first rays. The sky never look more beautiful. Rome was at my feet. A wonderful sense of freedom and excitement engulfed me. I started walking the street, breathing deep the morning fresh air. Closing my eyes, I could hear the faint whisper of the buildings around me sharing the incredible flow of events they witnessed over the centuries. I could feel the cobblestones wabble from the steps of yesteryears. I was transported back through time when Rome's historical treasures were built. I opened my eyes and there it all was -- Rome, of a bygone age, perfectly blended into modern times. The sight was fantastic.
Never had I dare imagine that one day I would be so close to the grand statues and sculptures as to not only examine their fine details but to actually be able to touch and feel them. It is incredible to see the ease by which italians can blend into and be one with their cultural heritage. I truly envy them. And now I understand why italians have such artistic flair. They are born and raised in what has to be one of the most open and accessible culture trove in the world. Viva Roma!
As my three day visit went by, I was struck by the carefree of these very beautiful people. And of course, I was amazed by the grandeur that makes up Rome. Well, it's true, Rome wasn't built in a day -- but it won my heart in far less time.
Then, I moved on to the Rennaissance City, Florence, where I did some serious bargaining for leather goods and souvenirs! It was fun! But even more fun was about to come in my next stop, the very beautiful arshipelogo Venice.
To be honest, I was surprised by the small number of people actually living in Venice although the number of tourists abound. Many of the old buildings are found empty with their doors eroded and broken by the waters. Frozen in time, they stand guard over the canals like ecrie haunted houses, looking more like movie facades than the palacial homes and prisons they once were, as though they were put there for the benefits of the tourists.
Everything must change, it's true. There is no exception to the city which has reigned unrivaled in the world's imagination as a symbol of romance since the Middle Ages. However, early time as the sun rises, the allure of the city mutates. The morning mist transforms its complexes and the sunbeams fill it with renewed life and oigour. As the day unfolds, and the deep romantic energy takes possession of my soul, I find myself embracing Venice with all my heart. For she really provides the perfect backdrop for dreamers indulging in reveries of the romantic past.
A holiday might come to an end, but the dreams continue. The imagination provides a place somewhere in time to live our dreams, those dreams that turn our hopes into vibrant realities.
I'm glad that I dreamt.
