Messerschmitt ME 110
Developed for a ground attack/escort fighter role it was a very reliable and manuverable aircraft to fly. But in the Battle of Britain it was a disaster. Antique Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires Were outrunning them and chewing them up.
It was a great aircraft in the invasion of Poland but later on it was not a safe aircraft to get into a dogfight with. If you did it was a sure loss and it wasn't your opponant losing.  It enjoyed success in North Africa attacking Allied forces but once again it was not a match for American P-40s and British Spits. It even needed its own fighter cover.
