16th Darley Awards
16th Annual Darley Awards to be held January 25, 2003 at Los Alamitos
Hosted by the Arabian Racing Association of California and Los Alamitos Race Course, the Darley Awards is the most prestigious occasion of the year in Arabian racing. This esteemed black-tie affair honors the year's top achievers - the horses, as well as the people devoted to breeding, owning, training and riding them. But the Saturday evening ceremony is not the only thing on tap for the weekend. The following is a tentative schedule of the weekend's events:
Friday January 24, 2003
After a golf outing (possibly a tournament) kicks off a weekend full of activities, the Darley Reception will be held Friday evening. This gathering will be highlighted by the Racing Tent of Honor and Hall of Fame ceremony which will witness the recognition of Arabian horses and Arabian horse persons for their outstanding accomplishments. The AJC Performance Awards also will be presented at the Reception, after which an evening of racing, including two stakes races, will add an exciting conclusion to a memorable opening evening. The Reception will begin with cocktails at 5:30 PM. A dinner buffet also will be served. The cost for the entire evening is only $30 through January 17, 2003, and $40 thereafter or 'at the door.'
Saturday January 25, 2003
The irreverence of the Alibi Brunch is a recent tradition that everyone talks about long after the Darley weekend is over. Starting at 10AM with a breakfast buffet, the light-hearted 'doins' will see the return of the infamous Daryl Awards, and a few other surprises. No one is spared, so everyone will feel at home! The cost of the Alibi Brunch is only $25 in advance (before January 17, 2003) and $35 after that. You won't want to miss it!
Two interesting and educational hour-long seminars are set for Saturday afternoon. Both seminars are free of charge to all interested in attending. The first session, starting at 1:30 PM, features Pat Hurley discussing business issues involved in racing. The second, beginning at 3:00 PM, has legal issues as its topic. It will be given by B. Paul Husband.
The most important occasion of the weekend and of the racing year will occur Saturday evening with the presentation of the Darley Awards ceremony. This is the sixteenth year for this black tie affair, which is considered the most prestigious event in Arabian racing. Awards will be presented in twelve categories. The evening will start at 6:30 PM with cocktails, after which dinner, the awards ceremony, and musical entertainment will make for a very memorable night. The cost is $100 in advance and $125 after January 17, 2003.
Sunday January 26, 2003
Wrapping things up will be 'Breakfast on the Apron' hosted by the Arabian Horse Association of California. Join your friends and fellow racing enthusiasts at Los Alamitos Race Course starting at 8:30 AM for a relaxing and scrumptious finish to a great Darleys weekend!

The official hotel for the 16th Darley Awards is the Residence Inn by Marriott. WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE
Five additional horses have died in southern Manitoba and have tested positive for West Nile virus. This brings to 10 the number of horses known to have had the virus in Manitoba.
The five additional positive horses were found in the RMs of St. Andrews, Lansdowne, Lorne and Argyle.
Horse owners should watch for symptoms related to the central nervous system such as listlessness, muscle twitches, loss of appetite, lack of co-ordination and weakness. If these symptoms exist, a veterinarian should be consulted.
Horse owners are encouraged to consider preventive steps to help protect their animals. These include stabling horses at night in a barn with mosquito netting in place, using insect sprays and repellents, and burning smudges where permitted to reduce mosquito activity near horses. Reducing the amount of tall vegetation near corrals and barns and reducing standing water will also help. A conditional use vaccine is also accessible through veterinarians. for any more information Please Contact your Veterinarian

ARABIAN HORSE AMERICA EXPANDS OPEN EVENT INCENTIVE PROGRAM TO INCLUDE LOCAL OPEN SHOW COMPETITORS
Westminster, CO, June 14, 2002Arabian Horse America (AHA), the promotional arm of the Arabian Horse Registry of America, today announced that its Open Event Incentive Program has been expanded to include Arabian horse exhibitors who compete at local open shows across the country.
"Based on the tremendous positive feedback we have received from the Open Event Incentive Program members, we have created an opportunity for amateur level Arabian horse owners to earn recognition and rewards for competing successfully in local competitions. Arabian Horse America wants to encourage and support participation in local shows. With the added help of several local Arabian horse clubs, the Open Event Incentive Program has now been adapted to local open show competitors. This newly enhanced program makes competing more rewarding and, since membership is free during 2002, there is an added incentive," remarked Steve Josephs, Executive Director of Arabian Horse America.
AHA's Open Event Incentive Program is a membership-based program that encourages all types of riding and competition through awards and recognition for both horses and riders as they reach established benchmarks. In addition, the horse's accomplishments are recorded as part of the horse's permanent event record at the Arabian Horse Registry of America. "This program is unique in the horse industry in that it is managed completely online. Because it is so easy for participants to sign up and log event results online, our Open Event Incentive Program members have appreciated the creation of a user and rider friendly program which they can benefit from. AHA has been able to adapt this program to our local show competitors based on feedback from our members and is pleased to have created one of the most cost-effective programs of its kind in the horse industry," adds Steve Josephs
In addition to local open show competitors, AHA's Open Event Incentive Program enables Arabian horse owners to earn points in national level events in disciplines that include dressage, endurance, reining, jumping, driving and others. Both individual point awards and year-end high point awards are available to all participants in these programs. Two other AHA's Incentive Programs are the Frequent Rider Program and Competitive Distance Program.
