Saturday, November 3, 2001 -- Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding activity. Other participants included Dorothy and Bob Metzler of Longview, True Mann of Longview, Susan Hughes of Tyler, Donald Brillhart of Woodlawn, Texas, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.
Location: The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).
Weather conditions: Clear skies prevailed most of the day. The morning temperature was in the 60's and the high was near 80.
Time: Started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 4:30 p.m.
Number of Nets: 11
Special Notes: There were three retraps, all of which were banded earlier this fall.
During mid-afternoon, we explored the pasture nearby and saw Meadowlarks and Henslow's, Le Conte's, and Vesper Sparrows. We were simply investigating whether the grass sparrows had returned, so we did not put the nets up. When we band again, we do intend to place nets up in that field.

Saturday, November 17, 2001 -- Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding activity. Other participants included Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Peggy Harding of Kilgore, Jason Pike and David Ringer of LeTourneau University in Longview, Diane Jones of Jonesville, Jack & Mary Jane Sanders of Karnack, Paul Fortune of Karnack and his granddaughter, Hannah, Susan Hughes of Tyler, Donald Brillhart of Woodlawn, Texas, Tom Walker of Jefferson, and 16 visitors from the Dallas area who are in Texas Parks & Wildlife's Master Naturalist Program. From Arlington: Kevin Hannon and Bonnie Bradshaw. From Farmers Branch: Aline Schwob. From Plano: Sandra Michael. From Irving: Sara Beckelman. From Ft. Worth: Jeff Quayle. And from Dallas: Pamela Ice, Cleave & Marian Buchanan, Kathey Roberts, Susan Roberts, Linda Sharp, Mary Frances & Orrin Stevens, Dana Wilson, and the group's fearless leader, Jean Miller. We hope they all will come again!

Weather conditions: Clear skies prevailed most of the day with intermittent cloud cover. The morning temperature was in the 50's and the high was in the mid 70's.
Time: Started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 5:30 p.m. The main net locations were active until about 2:30 p.m., then we established nets in a field for the rest of the afternoon.
Number of Nets: 13
Special Notes: We retrapped a White-throated Sparrow that was banded on January 10, 1998, retrapped it the following season on October 20, 1998, and in a third season on April 14, 2001. This migratory bird spends its summers in the Canadian boreal forests, and we have now trapped it in four separate migratory seasons.
We retrapped four Savannah Sparrows. Three of them were banded in last year's season. The fourth was banded two seasons ago on March 11, 2000. This is a migratory bird that prefers grassy habitats.
We banded our first Downy Woodpecker for this location.
Next Banding Date: Tuesday, December 18 (unless it rains, whereupon we will band Wednesday, Dec 19, or if it rains then Thursday, December 20, and so forth). The idea is to be flexible in adjusting to the weather.
