Location: The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake near Jefferson, Texas.
Participants: Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the banding effort. Other participants included Cub Scouts of America, Pack 209 of Marshall, TX with Patti Agnor leader and Judge Bonnie Leggat as assistant leader. Also participating were Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Peggy Harding of Kilgore, Diane Jones of Jonesville, Gerald & Sandi Gipson of Longview, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.

I. SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2001
A total of 86 birds were caught. (New birds: 75. Retrap: 11)
Weather conditions:
Clear. The morning began with the temperature around 28 degrees but by
early afternoon it had warmed to near 60. A small breeze came from the
south. At first there was no wind but as the day progressed wind began to
build.
Time: Started at 9:00 a.m. and the nets were closed as 3:00 p.m.
CST.
Number of Nets: 10
Special Notes:
We concentrated on netting birds near feeders and in brushy areas. We did
not place any nets in the hayfield.
We retrapped a White-throated Sparrow that was banded 3 years ago in January
1998.
Northern Cardinals were caught in a disproportionately high number.

II. SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 2001
A total of 40 birds were caught. (New birds: 25. Retrap: 15)
Weather conditions:
Overcast, cold, and threatening rain. The morning began in the low 40's
and the temperature held steady. A small breeze came from the south.
Rain began occurring by 12:00 noon.
Time: Started at 8:30 a.m. and the nets were closed due to rain
at 12:00 noon CST.
Number of Nets: 10
Special Notes:
We concentrated on netting birds near feeders and in brushy areas. We did not
place any nets in the hayfield.
Dark-eyed Juncos were caught in a disproportionately high number. This is a first
time that the number of Juncos caught for banding outnumbered any other species.
One of the caught White-throated Sparrows had its mouth full of millet it had
just collected from a feeder.
