Saturday, April 6, 2002 -- Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding efforts. Other participants included Henry Bradbury of Marshall, Diane Jones of Jonesville, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.
Location: The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).
Weather Conditions: The weather started out cloudy, then it was clear for the rest of the morning. After lunch the clouds returned and started threatening rain with light sprinkles by mid-afternoon. It was windy, with temperatures in the 60's.
Time: We began putting up nets at 8:45 a.m. and we ended at 3:30 p.m.
Number of Nets: 13
Special Note #1: By mid-afternoon Jim had run out of bands in the size required for White-throated Sparrows. Consequently, we had to release that species unbanded.
Special Note #2: The sparrow pictured below exhibited field marks suggesting both White-throated Sparrow and Savannah Sparrow. It escaped before it could be weighed; but overall, the White-throated characteristics appeared more dominant. Could those two species have interbred to produce this individual, or is this bird's heavy streaking within the normal range for White-throated Sparrows at this time of year?
