Bird Banding
at Caddo Lake

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2001.  Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding efforts.  Other participants included Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Diane Jones of Jonesville, Texas, Robert McGuire of Shreveport, Carolyn and Dickie Luce of Mooringsport, Louisiana, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.  A total of 24 birds were caught.

Location:  The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).

Weather conditions: The morning started off cloudy, but clear skies prevailed most of the day.  The morning temperature was in the 50's and the high was near 80.

Time: Started at 8:45 a.m. and ended at 4:30 p.m.

Number of Nets: Thirteen (13)

Special Notes: There were no retraps.

During mid-afternoon, we placed nets along the edge of the pasture and then walked it, trying to flush birds towards the nets.  Our primary objective was to determine if any of the Ammodramus sparrow species had migrated back.  We only walked a part of the pasture, and nothing flushed from the grass except a meadowlark.  There was very little bird activity in the pasture.  However, a sparrow was sighted in a different section of that pasture about five days earlier.
