Saturday, February 3, 2001. Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding efforts. Other participants included Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Diane Jones of Jonesville, Becky Philen of Atlanta, TX, and Tom Walker of Jefferson. Visitors included Jim Robertson of Jefferson, and Helen Hogle of Jefferson and her grandson, Adam.
Location: The banding activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).
Weather conditions: Clear. The morning began with temperatures in the mid-twenties but by early afternoon it had warmed to near 60. There was some wind.
Time: Started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m. CST.
Number of Nets: From 8:30 a.m.
till 3:00 p.m. we had 11 nets open in our usual places. Then we closed
the first nets at 3:00 p.m. and repositioned 4 nets to the hayfield to catch the
grassland birds until 4:00 p.m.
Special Notes: A total of 98 birds were caught (64 new birds; 34 retraps). Most of the birds were caught in nets near seed feeders. Early in the day we caught a Pine Siskin, which is a new bird for our banding effort. We retrapped a White-throated Sparrow that we had banded three years ago.
The hayfield was mowed over a week earlier in preparation for the planting of pine seedlings, and we discovered the mowing had greatly affected the habitat in that we received a poor response, for we caught only 3 sparrows (a Savannah, a LeConte's and a Henslow's). This is way down in numbers compared to prior times. The Henslow's Sparrow that we caught in the hayfield was a retrap, originally banded on November 25, 2000.
In mid-afternoon it was discovered a Sharp-shinned Hawk was picking off song birds at the feeders.
