Position opening at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense
University The Institute of National Strategic Studies (INSS) at the National
Defense University is seeking candidates for the position of Research Assistant
for its Quadrennial Defense Review working group. The Quadrennial Defense Review
(QDR) working group is framing and analyzing issues for the next QDR (2001).
Cooperating with individuals and groups from the Joint Staff, Services, OSD,
think tanks, and the private sector, the QDR Working Group is looking into a
range of issues, including the future security environment, broad strategy alternatives,
force sizing criteria, and strategy driven force structure alternatives. This
is a unique opportunity for individuals with specific interest in defense issues
to take part in a cutting-edge, dynamic, and policy-relevant project. Job Description
The research assistant will work closely with the leader of the working group,
Michele Flournoy, Distinguished Research Professor at INSS, as well as with
the group's Senior Defense Fellows. Responsibilities include in-depth research
on a variety of defense-related issues, "information-hunting", coordination
of briefings and meetings, scheduling, and other administrative tasks. This
is a full-time position. Qualifications Candidates should hold a Masters degree
in a defense or Security related field (such as Public Policy or International
Relations). Specific experience with or knowledge of the U.S. Armed Forces is
especially desirable, as is familiarity with relevant issues. Candidates should
possess strong writing abilities, experience with various search engines and
research tools, ability and desire to work independently as well as in a group
environment, and strong administrative skills. Candidates must be U.S. citizens
Salary This is a U.S. Government GS-09 grade position, with benefits. Term of
