Love for the Land

"What many Appalachians share in common is a closeness to the land, a familiarity with it, and an attachment to it" (Fisher 68). Says Robert Coles, "'the land is almost anything and everything: a neighbor, a friend, a part of the family, handed down and talked about and loved, loved dearly . . . (Fisher 68). Unfortunately, "for decades Appalachians have witnessed a constant assault on their land . . .[and] the displacement of hundreds of thousands" (Fisher 68). The characters in the Appalachian novels display this love and respect for their land, especially those characters in THE TALL WOMAN, HUNTER'S HORN, and IN THE TENNESSEE MOUNTAINS. The novels STORMING HEAVEN and SHE WALKS THESE HILLS portray the tragic assault of the land belonging to Appalachian people.
