Denise Giardina


Denise Giardina was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, and was raised in a coal camp in McDowell County (Emory and Henry 1).. She attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and received her Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary (Emory and Henry 1). She has written four historical novels including GOOD KING HARRY in 1984, and SAINTS AND VILLAINS in 1998 (Emory and Henry 1). Her other books deal with coal mining in Appalachia including STORMING HEAVEN and THE UNQUIET EARTH. STORMING HEAVEN earned the Weatherford Award for best new book about the Appalachian South, and Giardina received the Lillian Smith Award for THE UNQUIET EARTH (E & H 1). Giardina is currently teaching at West Virginia State College in Charleston (1).
