Harriette Arnow


Harriette Louisa Simpson Arnow was born in Wayne County, Kentucky and raised from the age of five in Burnside, Kentucky (Allameh 1). She went to college at Berea for two years and earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Louisville. She taught school for two years in a local school district (Allameh 1). Her first book, MOUNTAIN PATH, was published in 1936. In 1939, Arnow marrried a newspaper journalist and lived with him on a subsistence farm in Kentucky (Allameh 2). They moved to Detroit after five years. After World War II, the family moved to a farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She died there on March 22, 1986 of natural causes (Allameh 3).
Arnow is the author of many novels including THE DOLLMAKER, HUNTER'S HORN, and FLOWERING OF THE CUMBERLAND. Her awards include the Weatherford Award, the Friends of American Writers Award, and THE DOLLMAKER came in second to Faulkner's THE FABLE for The National Book Award (2).
