Chapter Ten

Taylor Hanson

Two and two equal four, right? A perfect square. You can divide it evenly without using a calculator and it makes sense.

That kind of logic is what left me so unprepared for what happened on stage.

I had thought that the show wouldn't go on without me. That my family would realize that I wasn't with them and somehow find a way of finding me and everything would be okay again after that. I had convinced myself that my look-alike(or Parker, as the people I was with were now calling me) was probably just wandering around the park somewhere searching for his friends. It never even occurred to me that that didn't have to be the case.

So you can imagine my shock when I walked(or, rather, tripped) onto the stage preceded by Zac and followed by Isaac, both of which seemed to have not even a clue that something was not quite right. They were unawares and all smiles, waving and greeting the crowd as they all cheered.

Theresa, the girl sitting next to me, encouraged me to get on my feet like the rest of the crowd was, but I knew that my knees were too weak to even think about being able to stand. It was more than disconcerting seeing myself up on stage with my brothers, staring at the keyboards with timidity and fear and knowing that that wasn't me.

The crowd began to hush ever so slightly from a roar that I hadn't heard but would later hear described as everyone realized that the lyrics to "Gimme Some Lovin'" were not being sung. No one moved. No one breathed unless that had to. It was eerily still.

Even from the fifth row of the audience and on the wrong side of the stage(as Beth had put it earlier), I could see his eyes roll into the back of his head and he started to sway ever so slightly. it took a minute for him to actually fall. One of the back-up musicians standing behind him caught him just in time.

A stir passed through the audience like a wave through an upset ocean. People whispered as Isaac made a quick, incoherent excuse as they all quickly got off stage. The man who had announced the band came back on, looking rather furious himself as he tried to calm the audience down.

"What's going on?" Beth said to no one in particular. She was wringing her hands nervously, her stare never leaving the side of the stage where nothing but the keyboards stood now.

I stood up shakily and immediately regretted it as the place started to spin around me.

"What's wrong with Taylor?" Kim asked rhetorically.

"Whoa! What's wrong with Parker?" Jared exclaimed.

That was the last thing I heard as the last sliver of daylight disappeared from sight and consciousness left me.
