The Will of John Hanson of Braithwaite, Keighley, Yorkshire

     Dated 3 February 1797

        In the Name of God Amen, I John Hanson of Braithwaite in the parish of Kighley and County of York Stuff maker being weak in Body but of sound mind memory and understanding but considering the certainty and uncertainty of death as to the time thereof do make publish and declare this to be my last will and Testament in manner and form following. First my will and my mind is that all my just Debts Funeral Expences and the Probate of this my Will be first paid and discharged by my hereinafter named Executors out of my Personal Estate and that with respect to all the rest residue and remainder of my Personal Estate of what kind or nature soever the same be I hereby give and bequeath unto Mary my loving wife and Brother Thomas Hanson of Fell Lane in the Township of Kighley aforesaid and Brother in Law Robert Smith of Fell Lane aforesd. Upon Trust yet nevertheless that forthwith after my decease they put out the said monies to Interest upon the best Security that can be got for the same and the Interest or produce thereof to go and be paid to my said wife towards educating and bringing up my Children till my youngest Child Thomas attain his full age of Twenty one years or so long as she shall remain my widow and no longer. And in case the Interest of my said money be not sufficient to Educate and bring up my said Children my will and mind is and I hereby give my said Trustees a discretionary power to take of the stock what they think reasonable and in case my wife Mary happen to marry again my further will and mind is that my said Trustees shall take care of my Children and monies to Educate and bring them up with during their Minority and as soon as my youngest Child Thomas attains his full age of twenty one years my will and mind is that the remainder of my money shall be equally divided amongst my Children, Viz. Matthew John William and Thomas share and share alike in case my wife be married again, but in case she continues my widow my further will and mind is that she shall have the Interest or produce thereof during her natural life and then equally divided amongst my said Children by my said Trustees share and share alike and I do appoint my said wife and Brother Thomas Hanson and Brother in Law Robert Smith joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament hoping they will see the same faithfully performed as my Trust is in them reposed. In Testimony whereof I the said John Hanson the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand and Seal this Third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven.
