Scrimshaw is the art of etching a polished biece of bone or ivory. Although the origins of Scrimshaw are uncertain, it is rumored that it was started by the Japanese. Scrimshaw was brought into prominence by whalers in the 18th century who crafted watch fobs, whalebone corset stays as well as ornamental whale's teeth. Scrimshaw is a traditional Valentine's Day gift, as sailors would often bring them home for their sweethearts. Scrimshaw was also widely applied to powder horns throughout North America and Europe. Some consider Scrimshaw to be the last true form of American folkart. In doing Scrimshaw work the scrimshander etches an image onto the bone or ivory with a needle or a knife, after which ink is rubbed into the scratches. All of Tim's pieces are "line-etched".
Tim uses mostly antler for his Scrimshaw. All antlers are naturally shed annually. No animals are killed for this work or any other artwork displayed on this site.
