Fresh out of high school from in Walla Walla, Washington, Mark Whitman set out for Texas, where he played in the "Blue Flames", one of the first integrated blues bands in Texas. He then went to work with "Don and the Goodtimes" and later with "The King Biscuit Entertainers".

For many years Mark performed with "The Springfield Rifle" band, a local favorite and toured the Northwest, California and Alaska. In the 1980’s Mark joined with Ron Ussury and Mike Rogers to form "Sweet Talkin’ Jones" and released the "From the Heart" album. Mark spent three years conducting and arranging for "The Seattle Women in Rhythm and Blues" show and recorded their first album with them.

His impeccable lead and rhythm guitar playing puts him in constant demand. Mark is the recipient of the Washington Blues Society’s 1994 Best of the Blues Award for Best Electric Blues Guitar, the Best New Band "B.I.G.".

Mark has played with many local bands including "Duo Glide", "The File Gumbo Zydeco Band", "Dos Pecos", "The Muscletones", "The Fabulous Cyclones", "Catfish Zydeco", "B.I.G." with Dick Powell and Fat James, "The Uptown Allstars" and many more.

Mark has played with and opened for such nationally known groups as Three Dog Night, Ray Stevens, Savoy Brown, Canned Heat, John Mayall, Rod Stewart, Small Faces, Lou Ann Barton, Steppenwolf, Sly and the Family Stone, Marcia Ball, Joe Lewis Walker, Redbone, Al Wilson, Grassroots, Dobey Gray, Eddie Floyd, Albert Collins, Lidya Pense and Cold Blood, Tower of Power, Mary Wells, Sapphire, Boyce and Hart, Barbara Mason, Ike and Tina Turner, Mick Taylor and Al Rapone.

This year, Mark has been nominated by the Washington Blues Society for Best Electric Blues Guitar, into the Northwest Hall of Fame, and for the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition, Mark plays with "The Scotty Harris Band", which was nominated for Best New Band of 1999. You can listen to Mark and the Scotty Harris Band every Sunday night, at Seattle's China Clipper Restaurant and Lounge for the Sunday Blues Jam.  No cover charge, and if you're a blues musician, bring your instrument and come join in with the band.

Mark’s versatile guitar style skillfully combines Blues, Rhythm & Blues, and Jazz with just a touch of the old Seattle sound, and a dash of New Orleans Red Beans and Rice Soul. Many nights you can hear Mark’s sweet soul guitar wafting through the historic Pioneer Square area of Seattle.
