Ellen Meets Her Children

Marilyn's first scene shot was Ellen's return to her former home. She walks into the courtyard of the Arden mansion and sees her children, portrayed by actors Chirstopher Morley and Alexandra Heilweil, playing in the pool. These are some of Marilyn's best unspoken and emotive scenes in the film.
From the Ceasar Vasallo Archives
Marilyn, Paula Strasberg, and George Cukor share a laugh with child actor Chris Morley.

For the second time in her career, Marilyn played a mother. She never had any children of her own. After several failed pregnancies, she finally gave up the dream of raising a child.

During a break in filming of the scene, she remarked to Marjorie Plecher, her dresser, that Alexandra Heilweil was the same age her own daughter (with Arthur Miller) would have been.

Her Chemistry with the kids is apparent of the fooatge of this scene.
