The Crowning of a Real Lady
The Legend of Jewels of Tau

The Jewels were created by the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Incorporated in the early 1970's to help promote service within their communities.

On January 22, 1988, on the campus of the University of Florida, the brothers of Tau chapter created the Jewels that were to become the first independentaly established sisterhood. In November of 1989, the Jewels severed all ties to Alpha Phi Omega, Tau chapter and became the Alpha Chapter of The Jewels of Tau, a privately owned, non-greek, non-profit, service organization.

Since then, the ladies of Jewels of Tau created a new pride and dedication in the accomplishments of the organization. For instance, Jewel Kathy Achille created our illustrious symbol, the precious and eternal DIAMOND. Jewel Natalie Smith, always with our hearts and spirits in mind, created The JEWEL SONG. Jewel Simone Smith, through sisterly love and loyalty, created the JEWEL CREED and the JEWEL LEGACY that is revised yearly to add in the new members.

In the fall of 1996, Jewel Marla McQuay proposed the idea that the Jewels make their flower the Sunflower. The SUNFLOWER is the Jewel flower because Jewels, like sunflowers, are always striving to stand tall and proud above the rest. Not meaning that we think we are on a level that is unattainable, but that we expect all our members to strive for their personal best, each and every day. Our colors, a momento from our creators, will always and forever be the true ROYAL BLUE and OLD GOLD.

On March 18, 2000, The Gamma Chapter of the Jewels of Tau was founded by Jewel LeShaey Campbell , incorporating the organization.
This is the first Jewel chapter to be created by a Jewel.
The seven co-founders are Jewel Rhonda Jones, Jewel Kerri- Ann Prescod, Jewel Natalya Harris, Jewel Charissa Marrah, Jewel Beth Elie, Jewel Sandra Quinton, and Jewel Natalie Hunter.

Through committment and striving for success, Jewels have gone on to be some of the finest women in the community. Through undergraduate and graduate chapters, many Jewels have become a part of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Some of the first Jewels joined and helped create the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc on the University of Florida campus. Several Jewels have also joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, and Delta Delta Delta, Pi Gamma Mu, Alpha Kappa Psi, Sigma Alpha Iota, The Order of Eastern Stars, and Golden Key International Honor Society. From there, Jewels have gone on to become wives, mothers, teachers, counselors, ministers, lawyers, nurses,... And in their professionalism, they still serve our society with pride and dignity everyday!
