People say to me_"How can you love them all?
It's a thing I never could do."
But in every hound there's a lot to love,
And the deuce of a big lot too.
There is one that I love for her wistful eyes
And her manner demure and shy.
While another I love for his haughty mien,
And the hell-fire look in his eye'

Then the terrier, too, that lies on her back
With her paws sticking up on high...
You would think she was one of the lap-dog sort
If you spoke as you passed her by.
But you show her an earth or an otter's holt_
"Leu in there!"_and you watch her go!
Hear the scuffles and snarls and the yelps and thuds
As she chivvies her old-time foe.

There is one with a growl like a charging bull,
And a nasty expanse of tooth_
But it's devil a temper at all he's got,
If a visitor knew the truth.
For I know every character inside out,
And each day I love them anew.
There is room in my heart for the whole darned lot,
And a thousand more like 'em too!
