The Meeting

This brief story relates the meeting of the five heroes who form the Semi-Super Squad.

Everyone knew it was trouble when Yoda one day found a time-traveling device. Since only one with his great talents in the Force could control it, no one had any power to stop him. He originally wanted to travel to Aldaraan, but the fact that it was blown up along with his twisted mind led him out of his galaxy and into the Milky Way.

Although skilled in the Force, Yoda really didn’t understand how the device worked. When he ended up in BC Egypt, he knew he’d done something wrong. The first person he met was a long-haired man in Egyptian dress, carrying a gaudy coat.

Yoda discovered him to be Joseph, chief overseer for Pharoah. He claimed he had work to do, and the he started singing. Yoda thought he might be useful, so he grabbed his arm and work the time-traveling device again.

When they magically reappeared, they were nearly run over by a large sport utility vehicle. After they got out of the street, a pedestrian accompanied by a lively Jack Russell terrier told them they were in Edge City (giving Yoda a funny look and giving Joseph, now wearing his dreamcoat, an even funnier one).

The man introduced himself as Stanley Ipkiss, an ordinary bank clerk. Then, remembering they were quite odd themselves, he showed them a green wooden mask he claimed gave him his superpowers. He told Yoda he wanted to use it to help people, and Joseph expressed the same interest. Yoda cackled, handed Stanley a bag of cheesy poofs, and worked the device again.

They were all more than a little startled when they ended up on a rooftop of a tall building. Stanley’s dog, Milo, was nearly crushed by what appeared to be a giant blue arachnid carrying a large, moist rodent. He introduced them as the Tick and Speak, and expressed...enthusiasm in joining their crusade. They agreed to find neutral ground to fight crime on.

Unfortunately, Yoda’s lack of expertise with the device led them to the beautiful, medieval world of Hyrule. An elf-like creature called a Hylian approached them and introduced himself as Link, Hero of Time. Smoothing the wrinkles in his tunic and combing his fingers through his hair, he said he’d join them but they’d need to find new crime-fighting ground.

After much difficulty, including a trip to a black hole and to the ancient land of Mesopotamia, they found themselves in a small, ordinary suburb. The Tick philosophically pointed out that “the smallest rodent carries the largest worms”, which Stanley translated as “the smallest city hides the most crime”. Therefore, the newly dubbed Semi-Super Squad (“Three S’s!” Tick exclaimed gleefully) built their headquarters in Livonia, Michigan.
